There's something about them that has always appealed to me. So it's safe to say I was looking forward to how Secret in Their Eyes would turn out. I was actually unaware that the film was a remake, and from what I hear, the original is a lot better. That's usually the case with remakes but once in awhile we get a film like The Departed, which is one of the greatest remakes of all time. Secret in Their Eyes unfortunately fell a bit flat to me.The cast is great. Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor all give formidable performances, specifically Ejiofor. He's becoming one of the most underrated actors working today. He always brings his A-game and this film is no different. It's just that the film around these characters doesn't mesh as well as I would have preferred. The three are a team of investigators trying to take down the man who raped and killed Jess's daughter. Jess is played by Roberts and though she seemed to be the center focus of the marketing, she's very much a supporting character in the film. That brings me to my main gripe with the film, Kidman and Ejiofor share a side story where it's strongly hinted and somewhat revealed that they have a romantic history. I'm fine with romance if it works within the context of the story. I legitimately couldn't find a good reason for this to be in the film at all. Their chemistry is fine, in fact I can buy that these characters would work romantically, it just doesn't fit within the story they were telling.The film is told in a series of flashbacks as well as the present time moving forward. At first, I found it unnecessary and difficult to decipher which was which unless I looked at the slightest hair style differences. But after awhile I grew to appreciate that way of telling this specific story. With that said, the romance does continue to interrupt the increasingly interesting crime drama. But I also don't even think the actual investigation was as intriguing as it probably should have been. Plus, the way the film closes felt like a far stretch, especially considering how realistic the rest of the film was. So in all, Secret in Their Eyes isn't a bad film, it just ultimately ended up being a forgettable one.+Ejiofor+Flashbacks prove effective-Story never popped-Romance5.3/105 of 11 people found this review helpful. There's something about them that has always appealed to me. So it's safe to say I was looking forward to how Secret in Their Eyes would turn out. I was actually unaware that the film was a remake, and from what I hear, the original is a lot better. That's usually the case with remakes but once in awhile we get a film like The Departed, which is one of the greatest remakes of all time. Secret in Their Eyes unfortunately fell a bit flat to me.The cast is great. Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor all give formidable performances, specifically Ejiofor. He's becoming one of the most underrated actors working today. He always brings his A-game and this film is no different. It's just that the film around these characters doesn't mesh as well as I would have preferred. The three are a team of investigators trying to take down the man who raped and killed Jess's daughter. Jess is played by Roberts and though she seemed to be the center focus of the marketing, she's very much a supporting character in the film. That brings me to my main gripe with the film, Kidman and Ejiofor share a side story where it's strongly hinted and somewhat revealed that they have a romantic history. I'm fine with romance if it works within the context of the story. I legitimately couldn't find a good reason for this to be in the film at all. Their chemistry is fine, in fact I can buy that these characters would work romantically, it just doesn't fit within the story they were telling.The film is told in a series of flashbacks as well as the present time moving forward. At first, I found it unnecessary and difficult to decipher which was which unless I looked at the slightest hair style differences. But after awhile I grew to appreciate that way of telling this specific story. With that said, the romance does continue to interrupt the increasingly interesting crime drama. But I also don't even think the actual investigation was as intriguing as it probably should have been. Plus, the way the film closes felt like a far stretch, especially considering how realistic the rest of the film was. There's something about them that has always appealed to me. So it's safe to say I was looking forward to how Secret in Their Eyes would turn out. I was actually unaware that the film was a remake, and from what I hear, the original is a lot better. That's usually the case with remakes but once in awhile we get a film like The Departed, which is one of the greatest remakes of all time. Secret in Their Eyes unfortunately fell a bit flat to me.The cast is great. Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor all give formidable performances, specifically Ejiofor. He's becoming one of the most underrated actors working today. He always brings his A-game and this film is no different. It's just that the film around these characters doesn't mesh as well as I would have preferred. The three are a team of investigators trying to take down the man who raped and killed Jess's daughter. Jess is played by Roberts and though she seemed to be the center focus of the marketing, she's very much a supporting character in the film. That brings me to my main gripe with the film, Kidman and Ejiofor share a side story where it's strongly hinted and somewhat revealed that they have a romantic history. I'm fine with romance if it works within the context of the story. I legitimately couldn't find a good reason for this to be in the film at all. Their chemistry is fine, in fact I can buy that these characters would work romantically, it just doesn't fit within the story they were telling.The film is told in a series of flashbacks as well as the present time moving forward. At first, I found it unnecessary and difficult to decipher which was which unless I looked at the slightest hair style differences. But after awhile I grew to appreciate that way of telling this specific story. With that said, the romance does continue to interrupt the increasingly interesting crime drama. But I also don't even think the actual investigation was as intriguing as it probably should have been. Plus, the way the film closes felt like a far stretch, especially considering how realistic the rest of the film was. So in all, Secret in Their Eyes isn't a bad film, it just ultimately ended up being a forgettable one.+Ejiofor+Flashbacks prove effective-Story never popped-Romance5.3/105 of 11 people found this review helpful. There's something about them that has always appealed to me. So it's safe to say I was looking forward to how Secret in Their Eyes would turn out. I was actually unaware that the film was a remake, and from what I hear, the original is a lot better. That's usually the case with remakes but once in awhile we get a film like The Departed, which is one of the greatest remakes of all time. Secret in Their Eyes unfortunately fell a bit flat to me.The cast is great. Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor all give formidable performances, specifically Ejiofor. He's becoming one of the most underrated actors working today. He always brings his A-game and this film is no different. It's just that the film around these characters doesn't mesh as well as I would have preferred. The three are a team of investigators trying to take down the man who raped and killed Jess's daughter. Jess is played by Roberts and though she seemed to be the center focus of the marketing, she's very much a supporting character in the film. That brings me to my main gripe with the film, Kidman and Ejiofor share a side story where it's strongly hinted and somewhat revealed that they have a romantic history. I'm fine with romance if it works within the context of the story. I legitimately couldn't find a good reason for this to be in the film at all. Their chemistry is fine, in fact I can buy that these characters would work romantically, it just doesn't fit within the story they were telling.The film is told in a series of flashbacks as well as the present time moving forward. At first, I found it unnecessary and difficult to decipher which was which unless I looked at the slightest hair style differences. But after awhile I grew to appreciate that way of telling this specific story. With that said, the romance does continue to interrupt the increasingly interesting crime drama. But I also don't even think the actual investigation was as intriguing as it probably should have been. Plus, the way the film closes felt like a far stretch, especially considering how realistic the rest of the film was.
