PROBLEM SOLVING TEAM (PST) INTERVENTION POLICY

Before a referral for an Initial Evaluation is submitted to the BMP, district staff is recommended to access

all available local resources in an attempt to remediate the concern(s). If a concern continues after all

local resources have been accessed, the district should request a Problem Solving Team Intervention

Consultation utilizing building and BMP staff to attempt to remediate the concern.

Problem Solving Team Requests can be held for students who have an IEP IF the concern is in a domain

area that has not been already identified as a part of the student’s disabling condition.

GOALS OF THE PROBLEM SOLVING TEAM INTERVENTION PROCESS

1. To respond in a timely manner to school personnel concerns regarding students who are

demonstrating academic, social and/or behavioral, motor, or attention/concentration difficulties

in the school setting.

2. To work with school personnel to identify currently successful strategies and build upon them.

3. To work with school personnel to develop additional strategies and implementation procedures.

4. To work with school personnel to evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented strategies and

determine the need for formal evaluation.

5. To maintain the student successfully in the least restrictive setting.

PROCEDURE FOR REQUESTING A PROBLEM SOLVING TEAM CONSULTATION Consultation between the child's teacher and the building principal and/or District Referral

Representative (DRR) should be scheduled to review the child's educational history and to initiate the

PST Intervention Request. Parental contact is required and consent SHOULD be obtained before any

type of screening or assessments can be conducted.

1. The teacher completes the Problem Solving Team Intervention Request, (PST-1)

2. The PST Intervention Request, Forms PST-1 should be sent to the BMP Office for review

and response. (If the concern is ONLY Speech/Language the PST Request may be given to

appropriate building personnel for review.)

3. The team will review request and notify related service personnel of concerns as appropriate.

4. A member of the team may contact the referring teacher and may request additional information

prior to the meeting.

5. A team meeting will be held to review the concern. Services that may be provided include:

a. Consultation with the concerned teacher(s)

b. Observation of the student and consultation with the teacher(s)

c. Provision of resource materials and or outside resource linkage

d. Data collection in the area of concern

e. Suggestions for classroom modifications/interventions/strategies

f. Conference with the parent and school staff

g. Behavior management strategies/functional analysis/behavior management plan

h. Follow-up meetings to review/monitor progress

6. A follow-up report, Form PST-4 will be written with recommendations forwarded to school

and the parent.

a. The case will be closed if the concerns have been remediated.

b. The student may be put on monitor to continue to assess progress.

c. The student may be referred for additional assessments and/or consideration of

eligibility for special education.
