On Fridays, I work from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Once I get out, I pick up a few things from the grocery store before going

home to enjoy my favorite afternoon of the week. I put my purchases away and turn on the TV to “The Chew,” which airs at 1 p.m. Monday through Friday on ABC. Sometimes, if I get home early enough I can catch the last half of Fri-day’s episode. If not, I just watch the recorded version, along with the rest of the week’s epi-sodes, on “On Demand” over the weekend.

I love this show not only because I love food and crave new ideas on how to prepare meals, snacks and more. It’s because the hosts, guests and audience are so relaxed, and fun. No one cares about anyone being black, white, Asian, Hispanic, gay or what-ever. They all just have so much fun together, with preparing foods as the main theme that no one cares about anything else. It is very relaxing, not to mention entertaining and educa-tional.

I’m not the greatest cook in the world, but I love trying. Sometimes I make great new meals and other times they are epic fails. My hus-band and sons are willing Guinea pigs (usually) and I appreciate their honesty whether it’s good or bad. It’s usually good though.

Since becoming a diehard “Chew” fan, I have learned so much. I usually make my own sauces and soups now, from scratch. I look at the label on a can of soup at the store and cringe. The sodium content is enough to send your blood pressure skyrocket-ing before even opening the can. I truly have become a member of the sodium police force.

Although I try to eat well at all

times, my big downfall is chocolate. There will always be something chocolate around for me. I have cut a few things out of my diet perma-nently though. The first was corn. I do like corn on the cob during the season, but I have determined that something that looks the same all the time, no matter what happens to it, is not good for the digestive tract, at least not mine.

The second thing I’ve cut out of my diet is shredded lettuce. I see shredded lettuce and think ‘why, why, why?’ If you like it on tacos, it tastes so much better to line a taco shell (hard or soft) with a big fresh piece of leaf lettuce before adding your mix and other veggies.

The most recent thing I’ve cut out is unpeeled cucumbers. OK, so the peel is supposed to be nutritious but it tastes horrible. It’s hard to chew, is waxy like a candle and to me akin to what it would be like to eat the watermelon rind. Ick! Besides, I have a cucumber salad recipe handed down from my mother that is amazing. She would come out of her grave if she knew I made it with unpeeled cucumbers.

That’s it so far, but I am sure there will be more as time goes on. I have just decided that with certain foods, ‘I’m not gonna eat that and I don’t have to.’

Although I have a healthy out-look on life when it comes to food and what I eat, I sadly am not the poster girl for a perfect figure. There’s a reason for that. One, I’m way past my bikini days and too old to wear one even if I could. Secondly, I hate hate hate exercise. The only thing I like that remotely resembles exercise is swimming (lounging in a pool) and shopping (doing a two or three-lap walk-about, with a shopping cart, around the inside perimeter of a big store like Walmart).

Fair warning though, if I happen to be in the store near the TV section between 1 and 2 p.m., I’ll probably be watching “The Chew.”

KELLOGG’SContinued from Page 1B Worldwide, Kellogg’s is the largest cereal maker.

In 2015, Post Foods purchased the former Malt-O-Meal Co., creating the third largest cereal company in the U.S. Now known as Post Consumer Brands, they are headquartered in Lakeville, Minnesota.

Kellogg’s is still headquartered in Battle Creek, but has branched out into cookies, crackers, toaster pastries, cereal bars, fruit-flavored snacks and frozen waffles, m a n u f a c t u r i n g p r o d u c t s i n 1 8 countries and selling to 130 countr ies around the globe.

The Battle Creek plant used to allow company tours, retiring them in 1986 for safety reasons. Kellogg’s Cerea l C i ty -USA, a t ou r i s t attraction opened in 1998 to tell the Kellogg’s story in a hands-on museum format, closed in 2007.

Today, visitors to Battle Creek can learn the Kellogg story by visiting the John Harvey Kellogg Discovery Center at 480 Van Buren St. W.

Ninety percent of U.S. households still buy cereal, but new breakfast favorites have come into the marketplace, from protein smoothies to Greek yogurt and frozen waffles. However, cereal is still the main

from breakfast bars to protein shakes, are attracting today’ s Millennials, ages 18-34, who value portability and convenience in their breakfast choices, according to Money.cnn.com.

2SUGAR CORN-FETTIFeaturing a typical pirate with a round belly, peg leg, and an eye patch, Sugar Corn-Fetti tried to use ads to sell

the product. H o w e v e r , m a r k e t i n g a p r o d u c t and blatantly say ing i t ’ s c o a t e d i n sugar turned out to be a bad idea.

MR. WONDERFUL’S SURPRISEThis cereal relied on the pull of a “surprise” in the center of each piece of cereal, which was just a chocolate or vanilla center. The biggest surprise was when consumers opened the boxes to find that the crispies tended to burst, and the inside was coated with chocolate globs.

FRUIT BRUTEEven cereal can be too scary for kids. This General Mills failed cereal showed a breakfast -loving wolf on the front. The ads became too violent for kids, and they were scared away.

FREAKIESHaving a bowl of Freakies for breakfast doesn’t sound that desirable, and the cereal eventually died out. It featured alien goblins by the name of Gargle, Cowmumble, Grumble, Hamhose, Snorkeldorf , Goody-Goody and their leader, Boss Moss.

9CRUNCHY LOGGSThis sweetened corn and oat cereal were shaped like logs, which proved to be too weird for consumers. It

featured a beaver in human clothes eating the cereal, but it never took off.

GRINS AND SMILES AND GIGGLES AND LAUGHSWhen it comes to weird mascots, Cecil the GSGL machine might take the cake. He could only make cereal when he was annoyed, and parents didn’t buy in to that.

PRINCE OF THIEVESMascots a re supposed to be involved in the cereal in some way, but the Prince of Thieves was not. He was seen, in full archer garb, ready to shoot an arrow on the cereal boxes. Parents preferred brands less likely to encourage their kid to shoot arrows at people.

DINERSAURSWhat could have been a prehistoric f a n t a s y l a n d became a band of dinosaur food servers serving food out of one of their friends, who was made into a makeshift cafe.

She was a charter member of the NWOC Historical Society. Visitation will be from 3-6 PM Sunday, April 9, 2017 at the Dryer Funeral Home, Holly. Private family graveside services will be on Monday, April 10, 2017 at Crescent Hills Cemetery, Waterford. Sylvia “Dixie” Kovacevich Shutes 1922-2017 Sylvia “Dixie” Kovacevich Shutes moved from this life to the next on April 4, 2017 after celebrating her 95th birthday. She was born February 26, 1922 in Hurley, WI to Vaso and Johanna Kovacevich. After graduating from Hurley High School and working at Joe’s Pasty Shop she moved to lower Michigan where she proudly worked on .50 caliber Browning machine guns to help in the war effort. She married Warren G. Shutes before he shipped out on his naval tour in the Pacific. After WWII they lived in the Fenton area where they raised their children before eventually moving back to Ironwood. Dixie loved life; she was delight-fully mischievous, filled with spirit and vitality and was an inspiration - but mostly we remember that she was just so damn much fun and such a great joy to be around. She was also something of a Florence Nightingale, taking care of everyone in her circle including siblings, parents, husband, nieces and neph-ews, friends, neighborhood kids and especially her own children and grandchildren. In later life she became an accomplished painter, birdwatcher and gardener. We children remember her as a fierce and indomitable protectress. We knew she was a true lioness and were pretty sure she was a Montenegrin Princess as well. Dixie is survived by her two sons Richard (Lizzie) Shutes of Merritt Island, FL and Madeline Island, WI, Bob (Patricia) Shutes of Stockholm, WI; daughter Janice (Scott) Cobb of Duluth, MN; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; many loving nieces, nephews and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband Warren on Febru-ary 22, 1986; son, David; grandson Jason; brothers Rocky, Eli, Bob, Vootsie and George Kovacevich; sisters Jay, Skippy, Gertie and Helen and Dorothy who died in childhood. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Saint Simon’s Orthodox Church in Iron-wood, MI with her nephew, Bishop Anthony Michaels, presiding. The committal service will follow at River-side Cemetery in Ironwood. Arrangements are under the direction of Lakeside Memorial Chapel, Wake-field, MI, Jerald Rocco, owner. Condolences may be expressed through Legacy.com. In lieu of flow-ers the family requests that donations be made to St. Simon’s Orthodox Church, 226 E. Harding Ave., Iron-wood, MI 49938.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 89 years old and just learned that I have the first stages of bed sores on my buttocks. My dermatologist said that I should stay off of it as much as possible and apply hydrocor-tisone cream. I have COPD, and I need to sleep sitting up. I wonder if you have any other suggestions to help my pain and discomfort. — A.A.

ANSWER: Bed sores (also called pressure ulcers) are potentially serious problems that require immediate attention. We “stage” bed sores into four categories. Hopefully you have stage one, where there is skin redness, usually over a bony prominence such as the sacrum, the hand-shaped bone at the base of the spine. A stage two bed sore may be a shallow, open ulcer or a blister. At stage three there is full-thickness loss of the skin, while a stage four has exposed muscle or bone. Sometimes, it is impossible to stage ul-cers from their appearance alone. A stage one bed sore often is treated with a clear film for protection. Hydrocortisone cream is surprising to me, since steroids can thin the skin when used excessively, which you certainly don’t want to do. The pain should be treated, but you should be taking this as your body’s warning that there is a problem. The key to preventing further injury is to find a way to take pressure off the area. Sleeping sitting up puts all your weight on your lower back, buttocks and thighs, which in turn puts these areas at a high risk for pressure ulcers. There are several ways to combat this, including different kinds of mattresses and pads, and

even a device that adjusts automatically to pressure. Changing positions fre-quently (every two hours or less) is critical if you are not using a special mattress or pad. There are wound-management specialists, both nurses and doctors, with exper-tise for your particular situation. I would ask your doctor about finding and consulting with one. People with COPD are at high risk for poor nutri-tion, and making sure you are getting adequate

protein and calories is critical, as poor nutrition is a big risk for serious bed sores. I strongly recommend a visit with a nutritionist. Also, perhaps your COPD treatment could be optimized to make it easier to sleep in a supine (lying-down) position. This means a revisit with your regular doctor or the consultant doctor who is treating your COPD.

DEAR DR.ROACH: I am writing to you regarding your recent column about psoriasis. My husband spent most of his life suffering from severe psoriasis, until he was told of an all-natural solution: cilantro. In a matter of a few months he was com-pletely symptom-free, and remains so after more than a year. He simply adds a few sprigs of cilantro to a garden salad once a day. —J.L.

ANSWER: I also have read that eating fresh cilantro helps psoriasis. I couldn’t find any study that looked at this, and people responding to online support groups reported mixed results. However, it is very safe and might be worth a try.

Bed sores linked to serious health problems

GOOD HEALTH

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Sheena” has had horrible bad breath for the past six months, and nothing seems to help. She is almost 14 years old, spayed and in good health. I supplement her diet occasionally with a pill — brewer’s yeast and garlic — crushed up in her food. I also use special dental-care dry foods and dental-care treats. I brush her teeth (when she lets me) and massage her gums. I also put parsley in her wet food occasionally. What else can I try? — Deborah W., via email

DEAR DEBORAH: From your email it appears that Sheena sees the vet regularly, which is important for senior pets in particular. While bad breath (halitosis) often is due to dental problems like gingivitis — where bac-teria builds up in the mouth around the

gums and contributes to a foul odor — other conditions like diabetes, digestive disorders, cancer and even sinus inflam-

mation have bad breath as a symptom. So make sure cats with chronic halitosis get a complete exam to rule out other underlying issues. As for home solutions to simple halitosis: You’re doing all the right things. How-ever, as Sheena ages, her immune system might make her more vulner-able to gum disease. Keep it up, especially massaging her gums and trying to brush her teeth. Instead of a brush, you

could try swiping her teeth with a cotton ball or very soft cloth soaked in warm water, a gentle swipe from the gum line downward. Additionally, be careful with the amount of brewer’s yeast and garlic you give her daily, because garlic is toxic to cats. Follow the right dosage for her weight.

INGREDIENTS:•1 tablespoon Cajun or Creole seasoning•24 (1 pound) cleaned large shrimp•3 ounces fully cooked Turkey/Chicken

Andouille sausage (Applegate), very thinly sliced•1 medium zucchini (8 ounces each), sliced into

1/4-inch thick rounds•1 large red bell pepper, seeded and cut into thin

strips•1 1/2 cups corn kernels•1/4 cup chopped fresh Italian parsley leaves•1/4 cup chopped fresh basil leaves•1/4 cup dry white wine, such as Pinot Grigio•2 tablespoon olive oil

Andouille sausage (Applegate), very thinly sliced1 medium zucchini (8 ounces each), sliced into

1 large red bell pepper, seeded and cut into thin

Cajun shrimp in foil

DIRECTIONS:1. In a medium bowl, combine the Cajun seasoning, salt, and pepper. Add the shrimp

and toss to coat. 2. Place 4 large (10 x 18-inch) pieces of heavy-duty aluminum foil on a flat surface. 3. Divide the sausage, zucchini, bell peppers, and corn among the foil pieces, placing

the vegetables in the center of each. Top each with shrimp (about 6), sprinkle each with 1 tablespoon of the parsley and 1 tablespoon of the basil.

4. Drizzle each with 1 tablespoon of the wine and about 1/2 tablespoon of the oil. Fold each piece of the foil to form a packet, sealing tightly and leaving a little room inside for air to circulate in the packet. The packets may be refrigerated (or frozen) at this stage.

5. To cook, preheat the oven to 425F. Arrange the packets on a baking sheet and cook until the shrimp is cooked through and the vegetables are crisp-tender, 13 minutes. Open the packets slowly, being careful of the hot steam. Transfer the shrimp, veg-etables, and sauce that has accumulated to individual bowls or rimmed plates.

To freeze and heat:1. Place uncooked packets into sealable plastic bags, keeping them level and upright.

(Two packets fit well into a gallon sized bag). Freeze for up to two (2) months.2. There is no need to thaw before cooking.3. Remove the frozen packets from the bags and place them on a baking tray in a cold

oven set to 425F.4. Once the oven comes to temperature, continue to cook for 35-40 minutes.
