Research Topic- Security Concerns in Protecting Privacy While Using Social Media

Research Relevance- The relevance of this research attempts to help social media users become more aware of their use of social media and enable responsible privacy practices.

Research Purpose ~ Research Questions

• How can social media users enable themselves to be better users by reducing risk?

• In what ways can one facilitate awareness among social media users to offset diminishing privacy restrictions and security protocols?

The purpose of this research is gain an understanding into user’s perceived responsibilities when using social media. This, in turn, will help develop an enlightened approach to how users can better equip themselves to manage the privacy of their social identity.

• Strong correlation between aggregate number of users over period of time versus decreased concern of privacy/ security and personal information access

Current Research

• Significant number of users concerned regarding privacy/ security and personal information breaches (92% security/ privacy breaches)

• Significant number of users unaware of privacy changes/ how to access controls (only 5% mention concerns of how to change settings)

• Possible contradiction to Pew study

Current Research Results ImportanceThe importance of this research attempts to help users identify responsible security/ privacy practices that will enable them to be more aware of the risks involved in using social media. This involves a proactive approach to information security by being responsible users of social media. • What contributions? Identify specific areas where users can improve security/privacy practices

• What field? Information & Privacy Technology

• Who should care? All individuals involved with social media

• Why? To help users reduce risk

This is an addition to previous and current research being conducted in the area of Information & Privacy Technology.

Conclusion & Recommendations

Main findings:

• Users in significant numbers are concerned about security/ privacy issues using social media

• Users are unaware of how to change privacy settings or did not know that there were settings that could be changed

Conclusion: T ∞ SM(pop) accounting for in # of users’ concerns because of the volume

Recommendations: (Host) Enable user friendly privacy controls(easy access) (User) Research social media before using(be informed)
