NEWS 16 Sealing Technology January 2004 Garlock easy-fit non-contact bearing seals to extend bearing life Garlock has introduced a new non-contact bearing isolator that is intended to reduce the ingress of water and particles to bearing oil. Oil contamination is a major cause of premature bearing failure. The Klozure Guardian Bearing Isolator range can be hand installed on site without the use of special tools using a patented cam lock sys- tem, thus minimizing downtime. The seal is supplied as a single assembled unit comprising two bronze bodies separated by a PTFE locking ring that ensures zero con- tact of metallic parts and low ener- gy loss through reduced friction when compared with lip seals. It is intended for severe duty motor applications in the petroleum and chemical industries to paper roll end bearing seals and pump bear- ing frames. In addition to the timesaving cam lock locating system, which avoids the usual requirement of an arbor press, it has a high tolerance misalignment capability. Shaft-to- bore misalignment of ±0.51 mm (±0.020 inches) and an axial motion of ±0.64 mm (±0.02 inch- es) can be accommodated. This makes it an ideal replacement for seals on older worn equipment. There are no internal ‘O’ rings and the seal can be used within the temperature range –34°C to 204°C and shaft speeds up to a maximum surface speed of 61 m/s (12,000 fpm). Viton Extreme fluoroelastomers are a family of high-performance speciality products designed to meet the demanding performance requirements currently not met by traditional high-performance elas- tomers. They combine the excellent thermal resistance of Viton with the unique resistance to chemicals and environments that have historically exceeded the performance of con- ventional fluoroelastomers. Viton Extreme TBR-605CS (developmental polymer VTR- 8802) is a new, Totally Base- Resistant Viton polymer that is inherently resistant to caustic chemicals and provides superior resistance to hydrocarbon oils and acids. This is a new TFE/propylene copolymer that utilizes APA tech- nology and a new bisphenol cure site. Compared with existing TFE/propylene polymers, TBR- 605CS provides improved process- ing and lower volume swell in hydrocarbon oils. Lower volume swell and better retention of hard- ness yields better wear resistance. It also exhibits excellent compression set resistance, excellent adhesion to metal, and good steam resistance. Strong interest and applications are foreseen in the oil and gas exploration, chemical processing, utilities, automotive and heavy duty/off-highway markets. Due to its chemical structure TBR-605CS, in common with other TFE/propy- lene-based products, is not recom- mended for automotive or aircraft fuels. Viton Extreme ETP-600S is an upgrade to ETP-900. It has signifi- cantly improved processing and end-use properties while maintain- ing the excellent resistance to acids, hydrocarbons and low molecular weight esters, ketones and aldehy- des. The particular advantage of this material compared with prede- cessors such as ETP-900 is the sig- nificantly improved processing. It exhibits improved mould flow, faster cure rates, and improvements in mould release and fouling. The combination of improved process- ing characteristics should result in more trouble-free production. This new material has similar low-tem- perature flexibility, T g –10°C, to earlier materials and is inherently resistant to base attack and volume changes in highly caustic solutions, amines and hot water. It also has improved compression set resis- tance and physical properties, all of which can improve seal perfor- mance and life. This closed cell expanded neo- prene comes in standard strips from 3 mm to 80 mm thick and catalogue widths from 10 mm to 80 mm, with unlimited custom configurations, such as sheets and punched shapes. EMC versions have a conductive external skin, which attenuates the transmission of electromagnetic interference across the sealed boundary. Typical applications for 1016 gasket include gap sealing, noise reduc- tion, damping and impact cush- ioning on cabinets, furniture and machinery.
