Hockey great, Wayne Gretzky had this to say after playing in his first Stanley Cup Finals and losing:

“Kevin Lowe and I loaded up our troubles and our junk and made our way to the bus. We both knew we

were going to have to walk by the Islander locker room and were dreading it: having to see all the

happy faces, the girlfriends‟ kisses, the whole scene we both wanted so much. But as we walked by, we

didn't see any of that. The girlfriends, the coaches and the staff people were living it up, but the players

weren‟t. Trottier was icing what looked like a painful knee. Potvin was getting stuff rubbed on his

shoulder. Guys were limping around with black eyes and bloody mouths. It looked more like a morgue

in there than a champion‟s locker room. And here we were perfectly fine and healthy. That‟s why they

won and we lost. They took more punishment than we did. The dove into more boards, stuck their faces

in front of more pucks, threw their bodies into more pileups. They had sacrificed everything they had.

And that‟s when Kevin said something I‟ll never forget. He said, “That‟s how you win championships.”

As everyone begins the quest to have a championship season, the concept of sacrifice is one of the most

difficult to get players to buy into. They want to win but they want to remain comfortable. Challenge

your team leaders to pay the price for success. It will create a culture that will be passed down within

Coaching Staff Guidelines:

Preparing the Mind of your

Assistant Coaches

1. Always put the program first.

2. Never forget loyalty is the back-

bone to our program.

3. Consider other staff member‟s

feelings continuously.

7. Know your responsibilities and

carry them out with the best of

your ability.

8. Staff unity and morale reflect

our attitude toward each other.

9. Whatever we do, do it with

great enthusiasm and class.

10. Everyone will maintain a posi-

tive attitude and reflect this

philosophy at all times.

“Most people think about age and

experience in terms of years, but

it‟s really only moments that define

us. We stay mostly the same and

then grow up suddenly, at the turn-

ing points.

- Glenn Beck

“The best of the best are willing to

do what it takes to be great. The

best don‟t just think about their

desire for greatness, they act on it.

They have a high capacity for work.

They do the things that others

won‟t do, and they spend more

time doing it. When everyone else

is sleeping the best are practicing

and thinking and improving.

- Jon Gordon

“Taking stuff makes you weaker.

Earning stuff makes you stronger.

Create your own opportunities and

execute them. Rely on no one else

when it comes to improving your

situation.

- Bill O‟Reilly

“When I reflect on my life, I find

that the people who stand out are

the ones who challenged me with

words and inspired me with action.”

Seminoles in the Pros

Seminoles in the Community Down Syndrome Buddy Walk

The Florida State University Men's Basketball team was out in full force on Sept. 11 to help raise awareness for Down's syndrome. The Tallahassee Buddy Walk was one of over 300 Buddy Walks scheduled to take place this year and the Seminoles were happy to be a part of the event.

But the most important part of the day was the walk itself with nearly $55,000 being raised in an event created to celebrate the abilities and accomplishments of those with the disease.

"Participating in the Buddy Walk was a great experience," said junior guard Luke Loucks. "It is personally very satisfying to help out in our community and to be able to spend time with the kids - many of whom are our fans. As a team we are thankful to be asked to participate in the event and we get a very posi-tive response from all of the people

at the event. It is a very pleasant experience and I hope we continue to participate every year."

The one mile walk, which included a bounce house, games and a dunk tank, took place at the Southwood Town Center. Last year 250,000 people nationwide put their best foot forward to complete the 5280 foot trek.
