ABOUT MEHi! I’m Madison Sabatelli, an Interior Design student at Miami University. I love to create, whether it be with words, objects, images, or food (I make a really good grilled cheese sandwich). In the pages that follow, you’ll get to learn more about me through the things I have made (although we’ll have to meet in person to try out that sandwich).

WORKPLACE D E S I G NAvroKO, a design and concept firm based in New York City, specializes in restaraunt and hospitality environments. The firm is known for their story-telling approach in which a client’s rich narrative comes to life through their interior spaces. To develop this narrative, AvroKO looks to historical references of specific trades, eras, and neighborhoods - not to recreate the past, but to draw from it. The design for a satellite office in Cincinnati, Ohio implements these values by juxtaposing modern office design with historical influences from the practice of architecture.

The architectural scale wall, located in the communal space, serves as an homage to the trade of architecture by using one of its iconic tools to create a textured wall surface.

AvroKO’s practice of writing “little papers” - in which every mem-ber of the firm takes note of something they would like to ac-compish that year - is preserved as a light fixture in the library.

HEALTHCARE DESIGNDepression, anxiety, and other mental issues are something that nearly everyone struggles with at some point in their lives. At Vivere, these issues are not treated as diseases to ashamed of, but problems that can be overcome through mutual support and a range of holistic activities.

Page 14: Senior spring portfolio

The shape of Vivere is influenced by the labyrinth, a maze-like path used by many religions and cultures as a means of meditation and self-calming. Just as one may walk along a labyrinth’s past to delve deeper into themselves before rejoining society and others, the organization of Vivere imitates the process of healing in this way. Patients may participate in more pub-lic, group activities along the outer ring before circling in on the more intimate and private middle and center rings. After spendng time in medita-tion, patients can then reorient themselves by entering these stages in reverse as they leave. RETAIL

Natural materials and hues were employed in unexpected ways to evoke the calmness of nature. Glass, wood and stone are used as a wayfinding tool; the outer ring of the building, which is more public, utilizes glass or semi-transparent walls. The middle ring utilizes wood wall paneling, signifying the somewhat more private rooms. Finally, spaces for individual and private healing use stone walls. Flooring illustrates these space changes as well; polished concrete floors run throughout the main circulation paths, with a darker hue in the center of the building becoming more diluted as you walk towards the outer walls.

WRITING TO DESIGNToo often, I, as well as many of my classmates, have searched for inspirational images online, which we quickly attach ourselves to and deem the solution to our design problems. I believe that we should aspire to do more than simply create Pinterest boards and perform Google searches. In order to find the inspiration we lack, I am proposing writing as a tool for cultivating concepts and design ideas. While these devices can be re-interpreted and expounded on, the methods I investigated include:

Projection and Reflection to DesignWord to DesignLiterature to DesignNarrative to Design

Page 18: Senior spring portfolio

PROJECTION AND REFLECTION TO DESIGN

Writing entries before and after each design project reveal thought processes and reflect the original goals and outcomes of the projects.

Page 19: Senior spring portfolio

WORD TO DESIGN Words (shown: threshold) uncover associated connotations and inform the design of spaces.

Page 20: Senior spring portfolio

LITERATURE TO DESIGN Short stories and poetry demonstrate the relationship between literary devices (metaphor, imagery, simile) and the way we design spaces while providing a source of inspiration for the design.

Spring is like a perhaps hande.e. cummings

III

Spring is like a perhaps hand (which comes carefully out of Nowhere)arranging a window, into which people look(while people starearranging and changing placing carefully there a strange thing and a known thing here)and

changing everything carefully

spring is like a perhaps Hand in a window (carefully to and fro moving New and Old things, while people stare carefully moving a perhaps fraction of flower here placing an inch of air there)and

without breaking anything.

NARRATIVE TO DESIGN Storytelling used to design new spaces using written observations of Findlay Market - an open air marketplace and area with surrounding restaurants in Cincinnati, Ohio - to increase user empathy and spatial awareness.

Page 23: Senior spring portfolio

...here the flowers were even a little more uncultivated, more wild. Tenants used the extra space on their balconies to grow more freely—taller ferns with longer, fingering leaves, even several potted tomato plants and peppers...

PROMOTIONAL MAILERVisionary Design, an interdisciplinary design firm, wanted to create a fun and interactive piece to send to potential clients. The result is a wearable form of the firm's logo, a pair of eyeglasses. The wooden spectacles are "worn" by the photographed faces of the firm's four founding members. Colored eyeglass inserts allow the spectacles to become customizable before taking a selfie to spread the word about Visionary on social media.
