Seen from the outside, Seoulí s all sharp corners, shiny glass and concrete, with a population of sleep­d eprived worker bees. But look past the 12­ hour workdays, the intense soju­ drinking sessions, and the jam­p acked subway cars, and youí ll see that the citizens of Seoul have an unexpected romantic side.

While their work lives are intense and their study sessions interminable, thereí s always time to spare for a tÍ te-‡ -tÍ te. The culture is even, in many ways, geared towards twosomes ñ restaurants o!er ë couple setsí (prix � xe meals for two), there are a number of romantic holidays on the calendar, and singletons can �n d themselves objects of pity. So if youí re in the mood for romance, Seoul can be the perfect destination. And autumn, when the weather cools down and the leaves change colour, is the perfect time to get up close and personal with a loved one. Here are some of the best ways to explore the city from a romantic perspective.

Being part of a couple in Korea is a full-time job, and a lot of that involves public gestures of love. Join legions of lovers in Seoul and make a romantic declaration by climbing Namsan, a mountain in the Yong-san district, and � xing a padlock

to one of the fences. Summer in Seoul is sweltering and most citizens stay indoors with the air-conditioning on full blast, while winter ñ with its snow, ice and bitter wind ñ means turning on the � oor heating and cuddling up in front of the TV (or the iPad). Autumn weather, however, is perfect for an outdoor activity. When the leaves start changing colour, hikers and walkers are drawn to Namsan in their thousands, either to walk up the neatly paved road to the observation tower, restaurants and shops at the top or (for the lazy) to take a bus to the summit. Although nature and the panoramic views of the city are the main draws, one of the best sights here is man-made: thousands of couples have attached padlocks to the safety fences to demonstrate their undying love. To do the thing properly, write your names and a romantic message on the lock before securing it.

There is an abundance of romance-themed celebration holidays in Korea, which can be stressful if youí re not in a relationship ñor even if youí re in one. November 11 is one of the most popular gift-giving days of the year. Ití s Pepero Day, so called because couples, friends and family members give each other gifts of pepero, a stick-shaped snack that comes in � avours ranging from chocolate almond to pizza. If youí re staying in Seoul past the autumn, be warned: Valentineí s Day is a day when women are expected to buy chocolates for their male partners, White Day (March 14) is when men buy candy for women, and Black Day (April 14) is a day for singletons to commiserate with each other (see 5 Senses: Taste). Korean nightlife protocol means spending an hour or so belting out K-pop hits before heading to a nightclub. For a piece of nature in the middle of the concrete jungle, a stroll along Cheonggyecheon is just the ticket. Once a crowded expressway, the below-ground stream ñ just o! Sejong-ro Street ñ is now a beautiful waterway bordered by a pedestrian-only pavement. In the evenings, couples stroll along, checking out the site- speci� c light installations and dipping the occasional toe in the water.

Myeongdong is Seoul's busiest area, mostly full of young Korean couples on dates, and tourists. Here you can � nd many street vendors selling snacks like ddokbokki (rice cakes in a spicy red sauce) and, at night, the pojangmacha (tents with tables) open where soju (Korean vodka), makgeolli (white rice wine) and various hot and cold appetisers are served.

Makgeolli: It is made from a mixture of wheat and rice, which gives it a milky, o!-white colour, and sweetness.

This lively pedestrian street in the Jongno-gu neighbourhood is home to dozens of stores selling traditional Korean crafts and decorative items. One of the best souvenirs is a pair of carved, painted wooden ducks ñ a traditional Korean wedding gift symbolising lifelong commitment. These make an excellent present to take home to any newly engaged couples.

On Black Day (April 14), tradition dictates that the lovelorn gather together and eat jajangmyeon, or black noodles. In a tech-crazy country like Korea, smartphones are ubiquitous and texting between partners happens at the speed of light (and 24 hours a day). ë Betweení is a Korean app that was developed to give users a private social network to document their relationship. The app (available for Android and iPhone, in 13 languages, www.appbetween.us) is free, and has been downloaded more than 3.75 million times. Couples can share photos and instant messages, plan future dates, and document the ups and downs of their coupledom, all in a sort of miniature Facebook. Upcoming additions to the app include a calendar-sharing function, and the ability to buy and give gifts and virtual coupons. Soon, couples may not even need to meet up in person.
