Summer Ordeal The 2014 Summer Ordeal was held on August 1-3, 2014 at Camp Stigwandish. Candidates and members alike completed a lot of service hours for the camp. In total, 92 candidates were inducted into the lodge.

The Ordeal: The Candidates View Josh J., Editor

Everyone remembers their ordeal as something that changed their lives. For me, the Ordeal wasnt just an honor, but it was a very spiritual experience. It certainly changed my life. Upon Arrival to the Ordeal, I, much like the other candidates, was concerned with my sleeping arrangements and the amount of food (or lack thereof) I would be re-ceiving. After an hours delay, myself and 91 other candidates started our journey in the Brotherhood of Cheerful Service when we tested the bow - a literal representa-tion of an inner task. This was when I started to think maybe theres more to this than sleeping under the stars and eating little food. The ordeal isnt just a test. It is

Wapashuwi Lodge Order of the Arrow Greater Western Reserve Council (463) Boy Scouts of America Warren, OH Chartered: 1995 Lodge Totem: White Lynx (an albino form of the Canadian Lynx) Name Translation: White Lynx (Lenape) Lodge formed in 1995 from the merger of Stigwandish Lodge 114, Tapawingo Lodge 368 and Neatoka Lodge 396 Current Membership: 288 The LYNX is a quarterly publication of Wapashuwi Lodge, Order of the Arrow of the Greater Western Reserve Council, Boy Scouts of America. It is published every March, June, September and December of the year and emailed to all lodge members and entered as First Class Mail and sent to all members without email. Submissions are accepted from all Order of the Arrow members and non-members and need to be sent to the LYNX editor and his adviser found on pg. 6 of this publi-cation, no later than the 4th Sunday of January, April, July or October for the up-coming edition. Our editorial staff reserves the right to re-ject material that is inappropriate. For all purposes of clarity or comprehension, we may edit to fix minor mistakes or summa-rize your lengthy articles. THE MISSION OF THE ORDER OF THE ARROW The mission of the Order of the Arrow is to fulfill its purpose as an integral part of the Boy Scouts of America through positive youth leadership under the guidance of selected capable adults. THE PURPOSE OF THE ORDER OF THE ARROW As Scoutings National Honor Society, our purpose is to: Recognize those who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and through that recognition cause others to conduct themselves in a way that warrants similar recognition. Promote camping, responsible outdoor adventure, and environmental stewardship as essential components of every Scouts experience, in the unit, year-round, and in summer camp. Develop leaders with the willingness, character, spirit and ability to advance the activities of their units, our Brotherhood, Scouting, and ultimately our nation. Crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.

meant to be a time of inner reflection.

Summer Ordeal Following the ceremony, we were led with our Elangomats to camp. Here, all the members of my clan set up some pretty unique shelters for the night. As everyone drifted off to sleep, I was wondering what tomorrow would bring. I awoke in the morning feeling fairly re-freshed. Breakfast came and went. After breakfast, we proceeded to our service areas for the day. My clan, along with several others, was assigned to the front of Camp Stigwandish near the lake. Our job was a conservation project. Two gullies were forming near the lake and we were to fill them with branches to prevent the ground from eroding further. Other service pro-jects completed during the summer ordeal this year are listed in the fact box below. During our service, the weather became less than pleasurable. Eventually, everyone had to be safely situated in the dining hall. Here we waited as the final ceremony was prepared. Due to the inclement weather, it had to be held indoors. The Props and Grounds team did a fantastic job of making the necessary adjustments so quickly. As the sash was laid across my shoulder during the final ceremony, I started to reflect on my day of service, and I came to the realization that not only had I physically tested the bow, but I had taken a deeper look at myself. That is what the ordeal means to me.

NOAC REGISTRATION NOAC Registration began on August 15, 2014, but that doesnt mean its too late! We anticipate the total cost for NOAC which includes National Fees, Contingency Fees, Meals, Transportation, Lodging, etc. to be $600. To help Arrowmen in managing the costs, the lodge has set up a payment plan.

Keep in mind that because of the already highly-popular nature of the event, only those who were approved to go and have registered and paid their deposit before August 29, 2014 are guaranteed a spot on the Lodge Contingent. Any registra-tions after that, if approved, will be added to the Contingent Numbers in the order received. National opens registration for additions to the contingent on October 1st, and it is anticipated that the remain-ing spots will go fast, so register as soon as possible! Registrations started after any payment deadline will have to pay the initial non-refundable deposit as well as any subse-quent payments that have reached their due date. You can still register online.

If you have any further questions contact

the lodge through e-mail: [email protected]

If you are an Arrowman who does not have internet access, please call the

    lodge at (330)-779-1463.

ABOUT NOAC The National Order of the Arrow Confer-ence (NOAC) is the premier event of the

Order of the Arrow, and is Scouting's second-largest national event. Over

10,000 Arrowmen from across our nation gather for an inspirational and unforget-table experience full of fellowship, train-

ing, adventure, and fun! During NOAC, Arrowmen will participate in a six-day conference which includes

top notch training sessions, cool recrea-tional opportunities, evening shows full of theatrics and special effects, and ex-citing programs along with celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Order with over 10,000 Arrowmen from around the

country/world. The 2015 NOAC will be held from Au-

gust 3-8, 2015 at Michigan State Univer-sity in East Lansing, Michigan, and will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the

Order of the Arrow. Details of the departure time and loca-tion, transportation method, and other details for the Wapashuwi Lodge #56 Contingent are still being planed out. Arrowmen attending the 2015 National

Order of the Arrow Conference will get a once in a lifetime souvenir, a special edi-

tion red sash. These sashes will differ from those currently worn in that the col-ors will be reversed, with a white arrow emblazoned on a red sash. The rarity of

the sash is noteworthy, as only those present at NOAC 2015 will receive them.

Any extras produced will not be sold.

Props and Grounds Report The busy season for the Props and Grounds Team has arrived but were ready for it! At Summer Ordeal we were able to adapt quickly to the changes in weather and held the cere-mony inside, instead of at the ceremony circle. This went reasonably well, and weve acquired materials to make indoor ceremonies better if they need to happen again. Our team at the Summer Ordeal was very efficient, and were always looking for new members. If youre interested in helping the team, please contact me at [email protected] We can definitely always use the help, and youll get a bead in the proc-ess! Finally, as usual we can always use materi-als for the Team. Firstly theres smudgepots. If you have any empty tuna or chicken cans we can use them, as well as cardboard to fill the pots. The cardboard can be in any form, and can be as simple as a few unneeded boxes. Also, we can use paraffin wax if you have it. The Team would also like to ask for dona-tions of tiki torch fuel, propane for our propane torches, and propane torches themselves. These all tend to be somewhat expensive, and we could use help acquiring them. If youre willing to donate any of these, again, please contact me. The Props and Grounds Team is excited to continue to make our Lodges ceremonies a memorable experience for everyone involved. We hope youll be willing to support us, and that our ceremonies are something that youll never forget! Yours in Brotherhood, A.J. G. Props and Grounds Chairman

Ceremonies Report Have you ever pictured yourself standing before a roaring fire, with your face painted and feathers trailing down your back? New candidates watch intently with wide eyes as you show them the meaning and purpose of the Order of the Arrow. You are a principle in an Ordeal Ceremony, a memory that candi-dates will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Or perhaps you are not excited by the prospect of a speaking part. Supporting cere-monialists are equally important. Fire tenders and torch bearers are also vital to the experi-ence of our new Brothers. You can become a part of the Ordeal Ceremony Team. Give a precious and lasting memory to new Arrow-men, and by doing so achieve a greater un-derstanding of the Order of the Arrow and its traditions. Many new ceremonialists are needed, and any youth Arrowman can be a part of the Ordeal Ceremony. If you are hop-ing to be a part of the Ordeal team, or if you would simply like to see what it is like, contact me at [email protected]. Respectfully, Scott B. Ordeal Ceremony Chairman TSisgoli Ama Chapter Chief

The Next Step: Sealing Your Membership Your completion of the Ordeal sets you on the path of an exciting adventure. After 10 months of service to your unit and fulfilling certain requirements, you will be able to seal your mem-bership in the OA by taking part in the Brotherhood ceremony. Brotherhood membership marks the completion of your induction into the Order of the Arrow. Now that youre in the OA, you might be wondering how it is you can get involved. Every lodge is different, but one guarantee is that there are many ways that you can become active. Talk to fellow Arrowmen and find out when the next lodge or chapter meeting is. Attending a meeting is the best way to find out what opportunities are available, and whether or not you want to take part. You must meet five challenges before you can enter the Circle of the Brotherhood. The first of these you should meet now. The next three require steady effort over a period of months. The last challenge you must meet after you are satisfied that you are accomplishing the first four. To help you along the way to seal your membership, the National Order of the Arrow has cre-ated the JumpStart for New Arrowmen website. This website will help you remember what you went through for your Ordeal and prepare you to enter the Circle of the Brotherhood. So grab your OA Handbook (you will need it) and go to: http://jumpstart.oa-bsa.org/ Check out our lodge website at www.wapashuwi.org and go to Events and Activities at the bottom of the page to find events where you can take your brotherhood.

  • NOAC CONFERENCE STAFF A National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC) could not function without the dedicated service of those Arrow-men who volunteer to staff the entire conference and work with one of the conference committees listed in the National Conference Reservation Information packet. These Arrowmen are referred to as conference staff. Conference staff members will enjoy a unique experi-ence serving the over 10,000 Arrowmen expected at the 2015 conference. While serving as part of the NOAC staff, staff members are encouraged to experience the conference, enjoy the many activities and special events that NOAC has to offer in addition to their service.

Members of the NOAC staff pay their own way to the conference, often traveling with their own council contingent. At the conference, they are housed with the conference staff and work in a support role to help make the national confer-ence a successful and enjoyable event.

All youth and adult Arrowmen interested in serving on the 2015 NOAC staff can apply online at the NOAC Registra-tion Site (https://registration.oa-bsa.org) beginning August 1, 2014. Each staff application will be electronically for-warded for approval by the Council Scout Executive(Supreme Chief of the Fire) or Lodge Staff Adviser. The deadline for submitting a support staff application to the national office for Lead Adviser and OA Director approval is March 31, 2015.

Download the Staff Application Process (PDF)

Staff lead advisers may be found in the conference reservation information.

A specially designed NOAC 2015 promotion patch will be mailed to staff members when their conference deposit is received in the national office. Staff members are encouraged to wear the patch to help promote the conference. A conference patch will also be sold at NOAC, and can be pre-ordered by going to the Trading Post online.

Serving as a Staff member at the 2015 NOAC

Wapashuwi Lodge has had a proud tradition of having lodge members serve on staff at almost every National OA event. The 2015 National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC) will be no different with a num-ber of lodge members who will be serving on staff at Michigan State. Come join them. If you have been to a NOAC, the Order of the Arrow calls you to service and help provide your fellow arrowmen one of the best OA experiences they could ever have. Serving on a NOAC Committee as a staff member is a true example of servant leadership by providing your experience and expertise to this event. There are many staff opportunities in many areas of service that you can be a part of. If you have questions about serving as a staff member, contact Mike Kupec at [email protected] or 330-519-3988. Mike has served on staff at eight National OA events and is willing to answer your questions about staffing and help you to find a committee that you are interested

in serving on. As a staff member, you are part of the Wa-pashuwi Lodge contingent to the event but you register separately on your own, not through the lodge contingent registration.

Those who chose you, NEED YOU!

  • History of the Order of the Arrow in northeast Ohio

All of our former Lodges Historical memorabilia needed Was your dad or grandfather a member of the Order of the Arrow? They may have some photos or newsletters or other infor-mation about the OA in northeast Ohio. If they were in scouting, ask them if they were ever a member of the OA and see if they may have some of our past history to share with us. We are gathering the history of the OA in northeast Ohio for the Legacy Project 2015 and need to have it ready in 2014. We are in need of copies or donations of actual items, photographs, paperwork, newsletters, program pamphlets, charters, patches, neckerchiefs, neckerchief slides, belt buckles, pins, T-Shirts, hats, etc. of all of the Lodges from northeast Ohio. We are creat-ing a digital archives to house all material gathered as well as other memorabilia to display in the Wapashuwi collection at the Council Museum. This includes Stigwandish Lodge 114, Tapawingo Lodge 368, Mahoning Lodge 396, Neatoka Lodge 396 and Wapashuwi Lodge 56. The former Lodges hosted Area Conferences now know as Section Conclaves so material involving these types of events hosted by the lodges is also important. We are also in need of the many items that have been issued by Wapashuwi Lodge over the last 19 years. Our lodge has is-sued over 100 different patches to date as well as many other unique items. We are looking for paperwork such as LEC agen-das and minutes, especially copies of the Lynx between 2000 and 2005, Winter Banquet programs, Award pamphlets, Vigil Honor pamphlets, as well as the many T-Shirts and conclave items especially our most recent Tuxedo shirts and red Bow Ties. We also need Chapter information and who were the Chapter Chiefs and Officers and Advisers each year. Oral and Video Histories We are going to reach out to every past Lodge Chief and Lodge Adviser from northeast Ohio in 2014 and seek to do an oral and video history of their experience in the Order of the Arrow and what it meant in their lives. The hard part of this is trying to con-tact the long list of these individuals no matter where they live today. Both Youth and Adult Help Needed (Required item for the Arrowman Service Award) We will need Arrowmen from all over the council to lend a hand to this project. Our Youth Chairman is Seth Welch leading this project but we need both youth and adults to assist with everything from contacting a past local OA member, to help gathering materials, organizing, scanning, photographing, videoing and preparing the Lodge History Book. These books will also be on display at the 2015 NOAC for all to see. We have a rich history here of the Order of the Arrow and service as well as the fun and fellowship we have enjoyed with the beginning of Stigwandish Lodge in 1938, Tapawingo lodge in 1947 and Mahoning Lodge in 1948. We would like to display our Lodge History Book at our 2015 Winter Banquet as well as many items of interest and Chapter His-tory materials. Currently our Council Scout Museum curated by Bill Moss has a room devoted to the Order of the Arrow with many items on display which will grow during 2014. We will be housing our Lodge collection later this year at the museum for others to see. If you know past members who no longer are involved in scouting but were a part of our history, pass the word on to them that we would like to hear form them and their story about their experience in the Order of the Arrow. Perhaps they were in the OA in another Lodge in another area of the country. Perhaps someones father or grandfather was in the OA and they have materials, photos or paperwork that may be sitting in storage somewhere and can be brought to life. If you can lend a hand or have materials to share, contact Mike Kupec at [email protected] or 330-519-3988. Some dona-tions have already come in and we are looking forward to more in the next year.

Lodge Historian Report (edited) by Seth W. - Lodge Historian First of all, the crate lid is making progress. Mr. Kupec and I have been working on sketches that involve all four chapter totems, the three camps, and the White Lynx. We just need ideas on how to represent Chickagami, Stigwandish, and Stambaugh. We are also working on the video interviews with the past lodge chiefs and lodge advisers of our former and current lodge. We have approximately 15 videos done. We will be con-tinuing at the summer and fall ordeals as well as fall fellowship. We are hoping to get an article in the four daily newspapers that serve in the area of our council. This will be asking if anyone has history such as records, patches, or pictures from the past lodges and current lodge. Recently we have been listening in to lodge history webinars put on by national. They have been teaching us on how to do things like preparing lodge history videos and finding history at summer camp.
