This years CRT team included: Susan Werbe, Howard and Diana Kassler, Robert Rubin, Saralynn Busch, Cathy Corman, Jennifer Livengood, Bob Frank, Caren Peters, Stacey Cannon, Arthur marquis and Paula Dickerman. It takes a village – and here is ours in action! Many thanks to all! Peace. Jill

Summer is a busy time of growth for our Temple members. It’s great to relish a less full schedule, warm weather and leisure. However, August is the beginning of the harvest. Please contact “Pickings” Coordinator Joan Brodsky ([email protected]) with ideas that you’d like to share about your lives, hobbies or collections. Currently, the schedule is wide open for August, September and October and your contribution to the “Picking From Our Garden” events would be most appreciated!

7th Annual Tobin School Fall Clean-UpSaturday, September 12th 9:00 am - 4:00pmJoin the Tobin School community for the Fall Clean-Up that brings together students, staff

and families with school partner organizations to freshen and plant the outdoor environment.

CRT is a lead sponsor of this event.

In the past six years the school campus has become a place of pride for the Mission Hill

neighborhood and your help is needed on September 12th to add fall plants. We plan to

create additional benches under the guidance of teacher Ms. Sandy’s husband Nick who

is a carpenter. Volunteers constructed the first yard furniture in 2010 and more seating is

needed as classes continue to use the outdoor learning spaces.

Come for as much of the day as you can and invite your friends. Your gardening, carpentry

and painting skills of any level are needed. Bring gloves and hand garden tools. Hammers

and screw drivers, too! Breakfast and lunch are provided.

Tobin is a short walk from the Longwood stop on the Green E/Heath line. Some parking is available in the school lot and in

the neighborhood.

Sisters in Spirit Inspirational and Entertaining Music from our Islamic and Jewish Traditions

Location: Central Reform Temple, Emmanuel Room Date: Sunday, October 4, 12:30-2:30 PM

Rabbi Devon Lerner and Esra Cansizoglu will bring recordings

of Jewish and Turkish music. We will discuss the content and

impact of these songs as it relates to our religions, cultures, and

traditions. We welcome all women from CRT and look forward to

new and old members. Please RSVP by October 1st to Jennifer

Coplon at [email protected] or 617-424-6733 .

Annual High Holy Day Food Drive Friends - we will once again be holding our Annual High Holy Day Food Drive to benefit the

Greater Boston Food Bank. As in years past, we will make bags available to pick up on

Rosh Hashanah and hope you will plan to return them on Yom Kippur filled with food

(Again, our gratitude for the wonderful Whole Foods Earth-friendly bags given by our CRT

family members James and Serena Robinson). Your donations help our neighbors in need

who may not have enough to eat. We have a special tie to the GBFB, because they supply

the food for the bi-weekly Community Market that we coordinate at the Tobin School in

Mission Hill. Last year, we collected 70 bags of food weighing 888 pounds. This translates

into 740 meals, or enough to feed a family of 4 one meal a day for 6 months. This is a

meaningful mitzvah to start your New Year off on the right foot.

Thanking you in advance for your participation and your generosity.

Peace - Jill

The Jewish Publication Society releases 50th Anniversary Editions of two classics

Of Jewish historical scholarship

Publication Date: October 1, 2015; U.K.: December 1, 2015

About the Books: The Rise of Reform Judaism: A Sourcebook of Its European Origins By W. Gunther Plaut Foreword by Solomon B. Freehof New Introduction by Howard A. Berman 320 pages This classic volume on the beginnings of the Reform Movement is updated with a new introduction. It covers the first one hundred years of the movement, from the time of the eighteenth-century Jewish Enlightenment leader Moses Mendelssohn to the conclusion of the Augsburg synod in 1871. In these pages the founders who established liberal Judaism speak for themselves through their journals and pamphlets, books and sermons, petitions and resolutions, and public arguments and disputations. Each selection includes Plaut’s brief introduction and sketch of the reformer. Important topics within Judaism are addressed in these writings: philosophy and theology, religious practice, synagogue services, and personal life, as well as controversies on the permissibility of organ music, the introduction of the sermon, the nature of circumcision, the observance of the Sabbath, the rights of women, and the authenticity of the Bible.

“The characteristic diversity within Reform Judaism is underscored on virtually every page of Plaut’s volumes.” -- Rabbi Howard A. Berman, executive director of the Society for Classical Reform Judaism

The Growth of Reform Judaism: American and European Sources By W. Gunther Plaut Foreword by Jacob K. Shankman New introduction by Howard A. Berman New epilogue by David Ellenson With select documents: 1975-2008 416 pages This classic second volume on the history of the Reform Movement is a sourcebook of the original writings that shaped the second century of organized liberal Judaism. It features a new introduction, a new epilogue, and important additional primary sources documenting the profound changes of the last fifty years. Although the emphasis in this volume is chiefly on the American scene, where the movement had its most notable advances, selections of representative liberal Jewish thought in Europe and to a lesser degree in Israel are included as well. These selections help us to understand the emergence and character, problems and tensions of Reform Judaism as it developed and grew in modern times. In addition to the primary texts new to this edition, David Ellenson’s epilogue considers the developments of the last fifty years that have continued to shape the course of Reform Judaism. About the Authors: Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut (1912-2012) was a longtime rabbi of Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto. The author of more than twenty books on Jewish theology, and culture, he is best known for The Torah: A Modern Commentary. Rabbi Solomon B. Freehof (1892-1990) was a leader of the Reform Movement and a world-renowned interpreter of Jewish law. Rabbi Howard A. Berman is the executive director of the Society for Classical Reform Judaism, and Rabbi of Central Reform Temple of Boston. He lectures at congregations throughout the country on behalf of the society and teaches regularly at Hebrew Union College. Rabbi Jacob K. Shankman (1904-1986) was the rabbi of Temple Israel of New Rochelle, NY and a leader in Reform Judaism. Rabbi David Ellenson is chancellor and past president of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and is the author of Jewish Meaning in a World of Choice: Studies in Tradition and Modernity (JPS, 2014).

“The work of Rabbi Plaut is not only crucial for an understanding of Reform Judaism; it is also indispensable for grasping the development and history of Judaism in the modern world.” -- Rabbi David Ellenson, chancellor and past president Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion
