One of the Pharisees asked him to

eat with him, and he went into the

Pharisees house and took his placeat the table....

And behold, a woman of the city,

Luke 7:37-38

who was a sinner, when she learned

that he was reclining at table in thePharisees house, brought an ala-

baster flask of ointment, and stand-ing behind him at his feet, weeping,

she began to wet his feet with her

Luke 7:37-38

tears and wiped them with the hair

of her head and kissed his feet andanointed them with the ointment....

A woman was to loosen

her hair only in thepresence of her husband.

The Talmudsays that a

woman could be divorcedfor letting down her hair

in the presence of

another man.

So grave was the

offense that the rabbisput a womans loosening

her hair and uncovering

her breasts in the samecategory. The guests

and the onlookers were

in intense shock.

Now when the Pharisee who had

Luke 7:39

invited him saw this, he said to him-

self, If this man were a prophet, hewould have known whoand what

sort of woman this is who is touch-ing him, for she is a sinner....

For him, religion was all

about being good. Godwas for good people,

not for people whose

lives were a mess.

By thinking this way, the

Pharisee thought that he

was maintaining high

moral standards,

And Jesus answeringsaid to him,

Luke 7:40

Simon, I have something to say to

you. And he answered, Say it,Teacher....

A certain moneylender had two

Luke 7:41-42

debtors. One owed five hundred

denarii, and the other fifty. WhenThey would not pay, he cancelled

the debt of both. Now which ofthem will love him more...?

Simon answered, The one, I sup-

Luke 7:43-44

pose, for whom he cancelled the

larger debt. And he said to him,You have judged rightly. Then turn-

ing toward the woman he said toSimon, Do you seethis woman...?

I entered your house; you gave me no

Luke 7:44-45

water for my feet, but she has wet

my feet with her tears and wipedthem with her hair. You gave me no

kiss, but from the time I came in shehas not ceased to kiss my feet.

You did not anoint my head with oil,

but she has anointed my feet with

ointment. Therefore, I tell you, hersins, which are many, are forgiven--

for she loved much. But he who isforgivenlittle, loveslittle....

Jesus brought the good news

of Gods forgiveness of thoseunable to pay their debts.

The revolution of Godis a

revolutionof forgiveness.

Those in the revolution are

those who have received that

forgiveness through Jesus,

and whose lives are (orshould be) marked by grateful

love for Jesus.

Luke 7:49

him began to say among themselves,

Who is this, who even forgivessins...?

event in his historical

biography of Jesus?
