Sewa International Nepal earthquake ground report May 7, 2015 On April 25, 2015, Nepal experienced a 7.8 magnitude earthquake killing more than 7,500 people and injuring more than 14,500. Millions of people were rendered homeless with entire villages flattened, across many districts of the country. Torrential rains have heightened the suffering of survivors, who are sleeping out in the open because their houses have been destroyed. Aftershocks are causing buildings to collapse as rescue teams are slowly reaching many of the worst hit villages The disaster wiped out billions of dollars of infrastructure: buildings, roads, schools, businesses, homes, and livelihoods. Sewa International is engaged in relief operations through partner organizations like Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh Nepal, Pragyik Vidyarthi Parishad Nepal, Jankalyan Pratisthan, Jananati Kalyan Ashram, Pashupati Shiksha Prasaar Samiti and Vishwa Hindu Parishad.     Relief Work: Medical

    It was too painful to watch the dead bodies lined up at the entrance of Teechid Hospital, Kathmandu. The identification is in progress and the searching relatives and friends have emotions varying from anxiety to pain

    A team of 6 doctors from Sewa Internationalrendered service in Jalbire, Agaam,Tenglakot villages of Sindhupalchok district.They performed 8 surgeries, attendedpatients with injuries from earthquake, fever,diarrhea, nausea, cough, and commoncold, and handled a delivery at the campat 3 a.m.

    Volunteers aided doctors and hospital staffwith handling corpses, embalming withchemicals, packing the bodies in the bagscarefully, and then loading them into vans.Another batch of volunteers assisted intaking patients to the right doctor orspecialist, and providing them with the rightmedicines.

    Relief Work: Operations

    The people in the villages are running short of safe shelters as everywhere is rubble. The foul smell emanating from the dead bodies pose an epidemic outbreak threat. The bereft families of the victim feel relief when they see any new people coming, with the hope that they would pay heed to their heart-rending stories, or would bring in some

    As first responders to the disaster, over 400volunteers were deployed in teams of eight tofind survivors, help in hospitals, and distributenecessary supplies.

    Volunteers have distributed 10,000 tarpaulins fortemporary shelters, 10,000 blankets, safedrinking water, dry food packets, and basicmedications.

    Shri Dattatreya, Shri Sunil Ambekar, and agroup of volunteers reached the villages withrelief material. The people belonging to thetribes Tamang, Lama, and Magar were shyingaway from receiving the relief materialbecause of their innate values of being a hardworking and independent community. Therelief was distributed keeping these values inmind.

    Volunteers also delivered relief-aid to Rasuwadistrict bordering China. These volunteersreached the district headquarter Dhunche withaid materials including food packets, blankets,and tarpaulins and distributed to 400 families.

    Appeal

    Sewa International has released $10,000 for immediate relief.

    Rehabilitation agencies have estimated $5 billion for rebuilding

    earthquake hit areas. Sewa is committed to raising $1 million for

    relief and rehabilitation efforts.
