BH. SPRING 5777—WINTER 5778 / 2017 UPDATE NEWSLETTER Shabbos House - Rohr Chabad Jewish Student Center - serving the Jewish Community at UAlbany (SUNY) since 1976. IN EVERY GENERATION Many are familiar with the classic “B’chol Dor V’Dor” (in every generation) line from the Passover Haggadah. At Shabbos House we are especially familiar with generations, because in university life generations are compressed into a shorter spans of four years or so. In our twenty years here since Fall of 1997, we have seen five complete generations of students. Every year there’s transition, every four years a nearly complete turnover. This youthful transition and transmission includes personal growth and character development, it builds both the individual and our community. It is a big part of the Shabbos House experience. Each generation brings its own challenges and opportunities, each mix of students has its own chemistry. Yet as much as things change they stay the same. We find students stepping into the roles of their predecessors, building on old traditions and creating new ones. Of course, no one is ever replaced, as every individual leaves their unique mark at Shabbos House, but we often muse how a current student reminds us of this or that alumnus or alumna. Even with twenty years of programming experience, Jewish campus life is constantly renewed, we’re always seeking new and creative ways to engage, relate and connect. It’s never the same old. There’s an old Jewish saying: Every Jew is a link in a chain going back through the centuries back to the Exodus and Sinai. We live in a time when the chain’s integrity is at risk on so many levels, whether religiously or emotionally, spiritually or physically. We need to keep the chain going strong and growing stronger. We are in unique position to witness and help facilitate this ongoing continuity, shaping part of the future of the Jewish people, and of each individual whom we encounter in their college years. College seniors may feel like they are at the end of the line, but this inter-generational connection doesn’t end when they graduate. Many parents remain supportive long after their family’s years in Albany, and alumni are the biggest financial backbone of Shabbos House operations. They remain a source of inspiration and Nachas as they build their own lives and are involved and invested in their new communities. DON’T PASS-OVER, HELP PASS IT ON! Thanks for helping us March (yes, Passover is in March this year!) forward with your continued partnership in this vital endeavor. Best wishes for a Happy Passover to you and yours. THANK YOU! BH. SPRING 5777—WINTER 5778 / 2017 UPDATE NEWSLETTER

Shabbos House - Rohr Chabad Jewish Student Center - serving the Jewish Community at UAlbany (SUNY) since 1976.

IN EVERY GENERATION

Many are familiar with the classic “B’chol Dor V’Dor” (in every generation) line from the Passover Haggadah.

Thanks for helping us March (yes, Passover is

in March this year!) forward with your continued partnership in this vital endeavor. Best wishes for a

Happy Passover to you and yours.

THANK YOU! Rabbi Mendel & Raizy Rubin & family

THANK YOU CHARIDY CAMPAIGN DONORS! Now in its 3rd year, the online 24-hour all-or-nothing crowdfunding campaign was a huge success, raising $75, 826—more than a third of our operating budget in a day—from 265 online donors & 14 matchers.

Special thanks to our matching donors: ALUMNI: NJ Alumni from 1980's, Sam Jacobowitz, Abe & Ariella Sedgh, Shmuel & Sara, Arie Lipnick, Arie & Chana Paller, Michael & Sarah Kashani, and the Gass family. PARENTS: Gigi &Gabi Aharoni, Marty & Susan Bodner, Dan Jacobowitz FACULTY & FRIENDS: Carl Bloomberg, Dr. Arthur & Nanette Brenner, Norman & Micki Massry

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

SQUAD GOALS, INDEED! This year’s Lchaim Board tshirt speaks to the teamwork and group effort that goes into Shabbos House that typifies the dedication of students involvement and investment in our feeling of family and sense of community.

THE SUPER-JEW YOM-KIPPUR APPEAL: At the end of Yom-Kippur Rabbi Mendel unbuttoned his Kittel to reveal a Superman shirt under his Tallis for a message about the need for both Clark Kent and Super-Jew moments throughout the year. CHILLIN’ & CHOLENT a new Thursday night tradition stewing over the weekly Torah portion and helping with room setup & Shabbos prep.

EXCESS-ACCESS: SHARE THE WEALTH! A new initiative this year with student volunteers helping to package up Shabbos leftovers and deliver it to seniors and those in the community who would appreciate a home-cooked meal. This program is thanks to a generous grant from Bnai Brith Gideon Foundation.

SWIRLING POKESTOP

WARM WELCOME! Now an annual tradition, the Welcome (Back) Fall Firepit typifies year-round warmth at Shabbos House.

SIX DAY WAR MEMORIES: As 2017 marked 50 years since 1967, two local IDF veterans of that war and Rabbi Israel Rubin shared their memories. REGIONAL SPRING 2017 SHABBATON: Last Spring, a week before Mushky’s wedding, we hosted a regional Chabad on Campus Shabbaton with a “Come One, Come All!” theme.

THANK YOU MR. ROHR: At the international Chabad on Campus NYC Pegisha/Shabbaton, our student delegation had an opportunity to meet and thank Mr. George Rohr for his family’s generous naming dedication of our Shabbos House Rohr Chabad Jewish Student Center serving UAlbany!

FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION This was taken at the Grad Party of 2017 as “Kitchen Regulars” hand it off to the next student generation who have in turn involved a new crew of dedicated, eager & able volunteers. It’s a great team effort and lots of fun & quality time each week!

THE NEW SUKKAH-BIKE PURCHASED WITH LCHAIM UALBANY UNITE FUNDS

TASTE OF THE HOLIDAY

FINALLY CHANUKAH! Chanukah fell entirely during Finals Week, so we delivered Chanukah treats as Food-for-Finals, had Hot Latkes on campus in cold December, and lit a Menorah made of various test-types on each branch in the Campus Center. Several nights of Chanukah many students came by to light Menorah and enjoy homemade latkes and doughnuts.

Our Family Costume: “A Jewish Frame of Mind”

PURIM 2018! Purim was during break in 2017 and will be on break in 2019 as well, so we went all out this year with a big carnival in the Campus Center complete with huge bounces, caricature artists, photo magnets, a dozen student activity booths and a masquerade. The next morning we had a morning Megillah Minyan and Purim on Wheels with dozens of Mishloach Manot on campus, ending off the holiday with a lively Purim feast (sponsored each year by an alumna in memory of her mother) that students attended in three shifts.

SHABBAT 360: 3rd year With “around the world” theme in the Campus Center Ballroom with all Jewish campus groups.

GIRLS NITE-IN: Craft nights with discussion, this year we did pastels, mosaics, mirror-etching & more!

TABLING AND MITZVAH BIKE: Tabling is an excellent opportunity to be present on campus, to meet and engage students, especially those who don’t (yet) come regularly to Shabbos House. The Mitzvah Bike in its

SUKKAH BUILDING AND SUKKOT: We can’t take pictures on Shabbat or the Jewish holidays (when we have the most events and largest attendance) but as our name implies: the Shabbat spirit spills into and fills the whole week. Sukkah Building may not be Sukkot yet, but the students are very much into the spirit and energy of the holiday even before it begins.

MIDNIGHT SELICHOT JAM

GRAVITY- DEFYING DANCING

UALBANY PRESIDENTIAL LEADERSHIP AWARDS

CHALLAH BAKING: Football-laced Challahs for Superbowl Shabbat, and pre-Rosh-Hashanah Challah with sweet & savory toppings.

TORAH STUDY Interactive study at Torah Tuesdays & Sunday Talmud at the weekly Minyan Brunch.

JAMMING AND CAFÉ NIGHTS Sat Nights with informal live music, games, schmoozing, good times after musical Havdalah.

FOOD SHOPPING FUN It’s more than just a chore, food shopping for Shabbos House is an adventure experience!

MINYANS INSIDE AND OUT We’re keeping up the Sunday Minyan (in addition to Shabbos, of course) see here inside & out.

CHOLENT COOKOFF CHEFS An annual tradition, 2017 champion. Coming up again the Shabbat before Passover 2018 as this goes to print!

THE WEDDING! One year ago, just before Passover, our eldest daughter Mushky married Moishe Denburg of Coral Springs FL (where they now work and live). The spectrum of alumni and students who celebrated with us was especially heartwarming—indeed like family! May we continue to celebrate “Simchas” (joyous occasions) together, in good health and with much happiness!

BASSIE’S BAS-MITZVAH: We celebrated Bassie’s Bas-Mitzvah just before the Fall semester began. Her presentation was on Jewish Literacy “A Book of Books.” A highlight for us was having 5 alumni who remember Bassie from over the years share their memories.

NEW ALUMNI INITIATIVES THIS 2017

Thanks to the 2017 Class Gift for combination door locks and the under-sink water-filtration system for drinking water, no more water bottles! Thanks to AEPI alumni for their annual generous group donation.

CONVERSATIONS AT KOSHER An alumnus saw the need (indeed, it is very important!) for increased support of UAlbany Kosher Dining at Indian Quad (especially with many upperclassmen living in apartments)

and pays for students to eat one lunch free each week at “Conversations at Kosher” with Mendel and Raizy.

CUP OF WARMTH An alumnus reached out for us to provide a warm welcome back at the start of the Spring semester. These cups were filled with all kinds of treats and goodies and given out at campus tabling and via the Mitzvah Bike. She also sponsored Food for Finals.

NEW TALLIS RACK Eric Sanders (’01) wanted to

do something special in memory of his father, so he and alumnus Jesse Weinstock (‘02) together with David Weinberg built this elegant wooden Tallis rack from scratch!

ALUMNI remain a huge part of Shabbos House! Selection of pictures from reunions, visits to alumni and alumni visiting here, and at weddings, baby-namings, engagements, and more!
