Parshas Balak

It is in this portion where Bilaam, a rabid anti-Semite who would employ every means and strategy

to annihilate the children of Israel, is forced to not only bless them but to actually prophesize the certainty of the coming of Moshiach. Maimonides in his classic magnum Opus on Jewish law (Laws of Kings) quotes the verbatim words of Bilaam and describes their particular

for whom we desperately and impatiently wait. opposites as Bilaam and Moshiach, actually crediting this despicable world-class Jew-hater with the messianic prophecy? The issue is so obvious that there must be a compelling reason for !""# The most unfortunate aspect of Moshiach and Redemption is the inevitable fact that in order to be redeemed you need to be imprisoned. For Moshiach to lead us out of Galus we must a priori be in Galus. $%& '*+ Galus? The only purpose of such a painful exile is in order to reach an even higher level of Divine connection and growth than when we do not experience Galus. /0"is a formidable task which requires enormous commitment and 1# When G-d decided to create our world it was for the express objective to do whatever was necessary to make this material, physical, mostly challenging world into a permanent dwelling place for G-d. This was not to be accomplished by isolating the physical world and transcending to a more spiritually balanced higher space. We are charged to engage our coarse world where G-dliness is natural, self-serving, egotistical tendencies so they have no negative

1"2" /3# Our messianic expectation is that all of the world, with all its inhabitants and everything that is part of this world, will acknowledge "/3!"#"" 34be forced to recognize that goodness, kindness, holiness and morality will overcome darkness and negativity. As long as there is a single space in the world, even in the most remote environment spatially or conceptually where G-dliness is still hidden, Moshiach is not complete. It is in the theatre where the bad guys control and where evil continues to proliferate that we need to restrict its assumed authority and replace /3!# 2"/3!"" ""#Enter the Mideanite women, taught and encouraged by Bilaam to seduce the Jewish men and divert their attention from Moshiach to satisfy their temporary animalistic tendencies. No ideology, philosophy or life system ever provided a decent alternative to Torah, and never did the children of Israel fall or suffer due to intellectual or spiritual conclusions. It is always the behavioral element in our being that tends to bend 1"the stumbling block in our historical journey towards redemption. %!2"#%5" /3!6and desire depends on it. The Duchman Family

To strengthen our connection to The Rebbe the Leader of our Generation.

Happy Birthday Mishy & Mendy.

“Those who establish Synagogues for prayer and those who come there to pray, those who provide lights for illumination, wine and grape juice for kiddush and havdalah, food for the wayfarers and charity for the needy, and all those who occupy themselves faithfully with communal affairs - may The Holy One, blessed be He, give them their reward, remove them from all sicknesses, heal their entire body, pardon all their sins, and send blessing and success to all their endeavors,

together with all Israel their brethren; and let us say Amen.”

The Shul Parking Garage

In response to numerous incidents in our garage and with the safety of our children, members and staff foremost in mind, we insist on TOTAL compliance with the following rules in the garage.

• You must always park in a legal spot• Do not park in handicap parking• Do not park along the perimeter of the garage• Do not double park• Do not take up more than one space• Do not block another vehicle

There is additional parking in the lots North and South of The Shul. When cars park illegally, you take an already challenging situation in the garage and turn it into a near impossible and dangerous situation. You create more havoc, less visibility and more aggravation which itself contributes to the likelihood of an accident, G-d forbid.

If you are not in a legal spotYOU WILL BE TOWED

Please NoteThe North side parking lot and The Shul

garage are closed on Shabbos and Yom Tov. Please do not open the barriers.

The calendar was entitled Hayom Yom. In describing this work Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak wrote: …”A book that is small in format…but bursting with pearls and diamonds of

In the end, in lieu of curses, the prophet gushes forth the most splendid poetry ever written about the uniqueness and destiny of the Jewish people. " " inspiration for thousands of years.

In one of the stanzas, Balaam declares:

This is a verse Jews came to love so profoundly that they start the morning prayers with it P|Q # " our prayers is not with a quote from Moses or another Jewish sage or poet, but with the words uttered by the gentile Balaam.

What is the difference between tents and dwellings, and why is one associated with Jacob, the other with Israel?

A Tale of Two StructuresIn the physical sense, the difference between

a tent and a dwelling is simple. A tent is a temporary structure, initially designed to be taken apart with the same swiftness it pitched, " and residence.

'+ '+represent two diverse spiritual pathways. There are human beings who carve out of their hearts a permanent dwelling space for the Divine. Their "" /3 # " their lives is consistent and undeviating. Their homes and spirits serve as an abode for G-d.

But then there are the individuals who are not so spiritually sensitive or exalted. These human beings are too overwhelmed with the stress of daily life, to be able to continuously breathe-in a G-d-centered consciousness. The confusions of " of holding a family together, the endless deadlines ! 0"deprive them of their ability to remain forever inspired and focused on the divine truths of existence. Add to this the incessant materialistic lusts and demands of a human body, which often ""/3!#

Notwithstanding this, even these individuals, once in a while—perhaps early in the morning, late at night, or sometimes in the midst of a hectic day—experience a yearning to spend a few moments with G-d. Even people of this category sense, every once in a while, a frustration, a void, which leads them to open their hearts to G-d. They then construct a tent, a temporary space to which they invite G-d, if only for a brief while.

It may be, for example, a few moments before sunset. A Jew, immersed in work, suddenly '+<" 2=# shul (synagogue) and starts talking to G-d, swiftly. In 8 minutes he is done. Why Name a Torah Reading After a Wicked Person?By Yossi Lew

Dear Rabbi,I was a little shocked that the weekly Torah portion read in the synagogue on the Sabbath was named after the wicked King Balak, who schemed to curse the Jews in the desert. Torah portion?Answer:! # actually six Torah portions named after central characters--Noach, Sarah, Jethro, Korach, Balak 6 Balak. A careful reading of the story will give us some insight into why this portion was named after a wicked man--and what messages we can glean for our own spiritual journey.

Analyzing Balak’s Scheme2 2 approaching Jewish nation, so he pleads with Balaam, a prophet, to curse them.

G-d tells Balaam not to curse the Jews, and initially, Balaam is compliant. But eventually, "4on going--so G-d gives him the freedom to choose.

Balaam then goes on to prophecy about the Messianic era (Numbers 24:17-24): “I see it, but 5#Cforth from Jacob, and a staff will arise from Israel which will crush the princes of Moab and uproot +

C ! " 4

he suggests a different strategy: Entice the Jewish people to sin with the Moabite women, " 6idol and anger G-d. The plan is successful, and a devastating plague erupts among the people #6 Cthe high priest, rises up and puts a stop to the physical and spiritual carnage.

H!""'2#+"!2!2to curse the Jews and then went on to seduce "# $! redeeming quality?

%!2"^

• Balaam is transformed by his hatred of the Jewish people into one who does not wish to obey G-d.

• A donkey talks.• The curses are transformed into blessings.• A portion of the Jewish people is transformed

into sinners of the lowest degree.• The prophecies regarding the Messianic era

all describe the ultimate transformation of the world.

This Torah portion embodies the power of transformation. The blessings are so profound because they originated as curses. Their transformation is so absolute that they describe the ultimate transformation of the entire world: 2 embodies this very transformation. The Talmud : transformed her own life by converting to Judaism and merited to become the great-grandmother of King David, was a direct descendant of Balak.2 The Moshiach, who will usher in the era of ultimate transformation and redemption, will come from the lineage of King David. And so, the person charged with transforming the Jewish people and the entire world—Moshiach—is a 2 ! greatest transformation possible.

$! ; ourselves and our lives is not easy. And this is " or a crisis. But it is often the most challenging situations that lead to the greatest gains. When we realize that, instead of submitting to the pressure, we can use it for personal growth and development, we can have the most sublime experience of transformation.

Besides fasting on these two dates (the 17th of Tammuz and the 9th of Av) there are also customs of mourning observed during this three week period for this great tragedy and loss of life. The historian Josephus writes that over one million Jews were killed during the destruction of the Second Temple.

The custom is not to have any weddings during this period, though engagements even with a festive meal are permissible.

One should not dance or listen to music during the three weeks.

One does not take a haircut during this time. There are opinions which are lenient for a child 2!C#

Revealing Hidden Love: Making The Bais Hamikdash A RealityFrom the talks of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson

A Paradox in Time

The Three Weeks between the Seventeenth of Tammuz and the Ninth of Av are referred 9

Despite its tragic associations, this period is characterized by strong positive spiritual 1# " " 1 " 9 # that transpires in our material world is a 1""that operate in the higher realms. Moreover, the way any entity functions on the physical plane results from relationships between these spiritual forces which are the source of all material existence.

As such, every tangible entity serves as a material illustration of these forces. For example: The sun is associated with the Four-Letter Divine Name Yud-Kai-Vav-Kai. As it is written, “For Yud-Kai-Vav-Kai and Elokim are 2 #+ H3Kai-Vav-Kai expresses the Divine attributes of mercy and revelation. The shining of the sun, especially during the Three Weeks when it is at its most powerful, thus indicates the prevalence of intense G-dly mercy.

>?'7V4The tragic nature of the Three Weeks and /3! manifest, are not mutually ex clusive. Likewise, cleaning a small child who has soiled himself is not always a comfortable process. For a father to subject an infant to this discomfort powerful enough to outweigh his natural aversion to causing his child pain. This kind of love is the hidden content of the Three Weeks.

The positive and overtly recognizable aspect of this love will be revealed in the Era of the Redemption, when “all the [commemorative] fasts will be annulled and will be trans formed #+C/3!and become manifest.

A Foretaste of RedemptionIn our day, we are standing on the threshold of :""of crossing that threshold. The Redemption is no longer a distant dream — it is an increasingly manifest reality. Moreover, we can now already savor a foretaste of the Redemption and sense the positive dimension of the Three Weeks at present, even though we are still in exile.

Although our Sages teach that “When the month C9+associated with a mitzvah are permitted. Building the Beis HaMikdashOur emphasis on the positive dimension of the Three Weeks should also motivate us to intensify our study of the laws governing the 2# will focus our attention on its building rather than on its destruction.

It is interesting to note the language Balak used when he asked Bilaam to curse the Jewish people: “Curse me” he said, words which can also be interpreted to mean that he himself should be cursed, which is exactly what eventually happened. One must always think before speaking and pay

attention to the words we use.

The Hebrew word “osek,” translated “occupies himself,” related to the Hebrew word for businessman, ba’al esek. of our attention.

After Losing His Mother to Racial Violence, a Rabbi Speaks of Repairing a Fractured NationBy Rabbi Avraham Lapine

This past week has been a tumultuous time for our country. Innocent deaths, violent protests and a heightened sense of racial

tension threaten to divide our nation. There seems to be no end to the steady widening of our racial disparity.

As a religious leader at the University of Missouri, students turn to me for guidance and counsel. They seek advice into repairing past damage and direction into forging a more tolerant path forward. There is no one correct stance, one sure approach, yet I feel that my life experiences—both as a religious representative and a personal victim of racial violence—have provided me with invaluable insight repairing a fractured society.

5"*7{an ethnically diverse Brooklyn neighborhood, which during the beginning of that decade experienced unprecedented levels of racial tension. The 1991 riots are etched into my childhood memories, my upbringing being wrought with feelings of agitation and unrest. It was only months later, on Feb. 6, 1992, that, as Q33school, I was informed of the murder of my mother by an African-American man in an act of cruel hatred and bitter violence.

5 my inborn respect for all of mankind—after 0" had torn my innocent life apart?

The following is my take on the matter, in

Inspiration, Insights & IdeasBringing Torah lessons to LIFE!

You shall see but the utmost part of them, and shall not see them all

(Num. 23:13)

It is only if one looks at a “part” of a Jew, a small detail of his make-up, is considered as a whole, no defects

will be visible.

A dramatic shift in perspective is necessary to counter such ingrained divides.

The stronger we identify with this G-dly portrayal of human import, the greater our appreciation and tolerance for others will become, even for those with whom, externally, we may appear to differ.

This outlook on humanity, which comforted me as I grew up motherless, was communicated to me by my own mentor and teacher, the Rebbe—Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson—whose passing was commemorated this year on July # :! values prescribed by the Torah, his life wholly dedicated to promoting a greater awareness of G-d, love and respect for a fellow human being, and to building a better world for all.

The Rebbe did not hide his optimistic perspective, and he used every opportunity to impress his view upon others. Moshiach

It was not our will that we were exiled from the Holy Land, and it is not with our might that we will return to the Holy Land. G-d exiled us from our land and He will redeem us through Moshiach.... But know please, all peoples of the earth, that only our bodies were delivered into exile and servitude; whereas our souls were not delivered into exile and servitude. We are obliged to openly announce that in everything concerning our religion, the Torah of Israel, its commandments and customs, there is no one who can force his will on us, and there is no power of coercion permitted to

enslave us.

Vislumbrando al Mashiaj69&

¿Es verdad que el Mashíaj aparecerá repentinamente en la calle principal 4¨ "

una apariencia salvaje pero angelical desparramando sabiduría y declarando que ha llegado el momento de la redención? Si ¶·6¨¸;

¿Es verdad que será anunciado en los medios de todo el mundo a las 6 pm junto con ofertas de pasajes gratis en El Al? Si es ¶·¨¸;
