Shabbos Parshas Tazria Parshas Hachodesh

This week’s Torah portion begins with an interesting, phenomenal text that many

commentaries interpret in various ways, some of which are extremely beyond the regular perspectives or the curve of knowledge at that time. The key textual words that evoke this discussion state “when a woman implants her seed and gives birth to a male child”. Our Rabbis deduce from this statement WKDWZKHQWKHZRPDQȠVVHHGLVˉUVWthe offspring is a male and when

the man’s seed precedes then the offspring is a female.

The Alter Rebbe, in his seminal work on the Torah, offers two H[SODQDWLRQV7KHˉUVW UHIHUHQFHV WKHSKLORVRSKHUVRI WKDWHSRFKwho opine the fact that when the man’s seed comes after the woman’s initiation of her seed, it is more powerful as the upper and latter position dominates, therefore the birth of the male child is actually due to the man’s predominance though evoked by the woman.

The second interpretation which the Alter Rebbe accepted as more correct is the fact that the woman’s seed itself has the components that evoke the result of a male offspring. It is in this small statement that we are taught an incredibly important lesson in life. Today, there is an accepted egalitarian equality of men and women. This was not the case not very long ago. The Torah always recognized the special, unique role that women have and constantly gives them the honor, respect and authority that was clearly due to them and which their very important role in life requires.

There is no more or less important partner in the dynamic union between a husband and wife, each contributing equally to the success of the family enterprise. The same way as in investments, the actual operator of the project is no more important than the one who invests the money to make it happen, as both are critical elements in the complete success of the results, so too in the very unique and divine partnership between a husband and wife. It is the woman whose capacity determines a male and the man’s capacity determines a woman. We make and complete each other.

As we approach the month of Nissan and get ready to celebrate our birth as a nation and exodus from Egypt, again the women’s priority is underscored as our Rabbis tell us that in the merit of the

ULJKWHRXVZRPHQZHZHUHUHGHHPHGIURP(J\SWDQGVRLQWKHˉQDOand complete Redemption with Moshiach, women will continue to play that vital role. In fact, Rosh Chodesh is especially related as a holiday for women as it represents the Moon, which in the heavenly bodies corresponds to the female.

As Chani and her family were sitting shiva for her dear Mother, Rivkah Dina, daughter of Reb Yosef Yehudah, of blessed memory, ZH KHDUG VWRULHV RI VHOˊHVVQHVV OHDGHUVKLS ZLVGRP NLQGQHVVunderstanding, commitment and everything that it takes to be an extraordinary leader in the Jewish people and an example that is worthy of emulation. It is important sometimes to sit back and UHˊHFWRQWKHFULWLFDOLPSRUWDQFHRIWKHZRPDQ

“The wisdom of the woman built her home” and “the woman of valor is the crown of her husband”.

Have a wonderful Shabbos, great Rosh Chodesh and extraordinary month.

Rabbi Sholom D. Lipskar

Thoughts on the Parsha from Rabbi Sholom D. Lipskar

AuraBased on letters and talks of the Rebbe, Rabbi M.

M. SchneersonAs the atmosphere envelops our planet,

so your thoughts surround you.Every conscious thought, every utterance of your lips, every interaction with your world is released into an aura that surrounds you. Through that aura, all life, all blessing, all that shines down from Above must pass.

An aura of beauty receives beauty. An aura of love receives love. An aura of life and

joy is a channel for unbounded light. You are the master of that aura. Only you have the power to transform your thoughts at any moment

from dissonance to harmony, your words from bitter to sweet, your deeds from death to life.

And so too, your entire world.

)ULGD\$GDUMy father said at a farbrengen: G-d created the universe and all physical objects yeish mei’ayin, something from nothing. Jews must transform the “something” into “nothing,” transform the material into spiritual. The avoda of turning the physical into spiritual and making the physical into an instrument for the spiritual, is a personal obligation. Every single person, individually, is required to do this.

6KDEERV1LVVDQMy father instructed his brother-in-law, R. Moshe Horenstein, a kohein, to say Yehi ratzon after the nassi, noting that even a kohein or leivi must say it, for it is related to ibur.

0RQGD\1LVVDQAmong my father’s regular Torah-study sessions: A parsha of Chumash with Rashi daily; reciting Tanach by heart - a chapter each of Torah, Nevi’im and Ketuvim; a chapter of Mishnayot; a regular session in profound study of Gemara - two folio pages weekly, another in rapid study of Gemara - three pages daily; a session of study of the Jerusalem Talmud; a regular period for Codes, but not daily. During the course of the year he would conclude the entire Midrash Raba, “borrowing” from the long sedrot and

“repaying” on the shorter ones.

Tuesday -Nissan 4The avoda of laymen has two categories:

1) Avoda with self: When actually at work, in a free moment in his store, for example, he should study a Mishna or two, or a chapter of Tanya. He should commit some Torah to memory - for example, Chumash, Mishna, Tehillim, Tanya, so that he will be able to review these while in the marketplace, the street or wherever.

2) Avoda with another: When discussing business, he should turn the conversation towards introducing a story with content, and seek some reason or opportunity to stimulate the other to study Torah, or to do similar activities.

Wednesday - Nissan 5My grandfather commented on the saying, “The place of man does not honor him; rather man honors his place.” The term, kavod, “honor,” has two implications. One is kaveid, “liver,” as the Torah says, “Pharaoh’s heart is kaveid (“heavy”), and the Sages comment, “His heart became like a liver,” (cold, insensitive). The other meaning is kavod, “honor,” signifying the revelation of a supernal encompassing illumination.

“The place of man does not honor him”: Place (and circumstances) do not make him cold and insensitive. Rather, “Man honors his place,” man has the capacity and the power to illuminate his environment (“place”) with the light of Torah and avoda.

When the soul descends into the body, it is administered an oath to be a tzadik, This oath, sh’vua, implies sova, “satiety”; the person is generously endowed with eminent powers to be DEOHWRIXOˉOO*GȠVLQWHQWLRQLQKDYLQJWKHVRXOdescend (into the material world). Schneersohn, of righteous memory, gave his son- in-law, the future Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory, the task of compiling an anthology of Chasidic aphorisms and customs arranged according to the days of the year.

The calendar was entitled Hayom Yom. In describing this work Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak wrote: …”A book that is small in format…but bursting with pearls and diamonds of

choicest quality.” “A splendid palace of Chasidism.” True to these words, Hayom Yom has become a beloved classic work and a source of daily spiritual sustenance.

The Purpose of PunishmentBased on Likkutei Sichos, Vol. XXII, pp. 70-73.

The titles given to Torah portions do more than distinguish one from another; they UHˊHFW WKH WKHPH DQG RYHUDOO FRQWHQW RI

each.

What possible connection is there then between the title of Tazria (“Conceive”) and the contents of this portion, which deal mainly with WKHOHSURXVOLNHDIˊLFWLRQRIW]RUDȠDVXQNQRZQnowadays - that resulted from evil gossip, Lashon HaRah.

Not only does the title Tazria seem to have no connection with tzora’as, they are seemingly antithetical:

Tazria, “Conceive,” refers to birth and new life, as the verse states: “When a woman conceives and gives birth...,” while tzora’as indicates the very RSSRVLWHDVRXU6DJHVVWDWHȢ2QHDIˊLFWHGZLWKtzora’as is considered as if dead.”

The concept of Reward and Punishment is one of the foundations of Jewish faith. The Rambam states it thusly: “The eleventh fundament is that G-d rewards those who obey the Torah’s commandments and punishes those who transgress them....”

Since the Torah is replete with verses that indicate that G-d is compassionate and merciful, it follows that His punishments are not for the sake of revenge - Heaven forbid - but are for the VLQQHUVEHQHˉW

However, it is not patently obvious that most of WKH7RUDKȠVSXQLVKPHQWVEHQHˉWWKHLQGLYLGXDOduring his lifetime. This was not the case regarding tzora’as; it was clearly revealed that WKLVEHQHˉWHGWKHSHUVRQ

The Rambam writes: “This alteration [of tzora’as] that affects clothing and dwellings.... was not a natural phenomenon. Rather, it was a sign and a wonder that affected the Jewish people in order to keep them from speaking Lashon HaRah. For he who speaks Lashon HaRah will have the beams of his house altered [by tzora’as].

“If he repents, then the house becomes XQGHˉOHG,IKHGRHVQRWXOWLPDWHO\WKHSHUVRQKLPVHOIZLOOEHFRPHDIˊLFWHGZLWKW]RUDȠDVDQGwill have to be separated from others until he ceases occupying himself with evil speech, VFRIˉQJDQG/DVKRQ+D5DKȣ

Thus, G-d reordered nature to keep individuals from engaging in Lashon HaRah. Tzora’as would ˉUVWDIˊLFW DSHUVRQȠVKRPH WKHQKLV FORWKLQJDQGˉQDOO\KLVSHUVRQLQRUGHUWRWHOOWKHVLQQHUJHQWO\DWˉUVWDQGWKHQPRUHVHYHUHO\ WRVWRSindulging in Lashon HaRah.

Even the punishment of the person himself, which required that he “sit alone; outside the camp shall be his dwelling,” was for the purpose of seeing to it that he “cease occupying himself LQHYLOVSHHFKVFRIˉQJDQG/DVKRQ+D5DKȣ

The reason why this portion is titled Tazria will be understood accordingly: Tazria, “Conceive,” is the beginning of life. The tzora’as itself, as well as the person’s dwelling alone, are not so much meant as a punishment, but as a means of UHFWLˉFDWLRQDQGKHDOLQJHQDEOLQJRQHWREHJLQa new lifestyle free of Lashon HaRah.

All aspects of Torah serve as a lesson. Tzora’as, WKHQ ZDV FOHDUO\ IRU WKH EHQHˉW RI WKHindividual. The same is true of all punishments LQ WKH7RUDK WKH\ DUH DOO IRU WKH UHFWLˉFDWLRQof the sinner, that he return to the proper path in life.

$QGZK\LVWKLVOHVVRQVSHFLˉFDOO\JOHDQHGIURPtzora’as? Because the suffering of tzora’as - being considered as if dead and compelled to exist in absolute solitude - is one of the most severe in the Torah.

,ILQWKLVLQVWDQFHZHFDQFOHDUO\VHHWKHEHQHˉW- being reborn anew, Tazria - then surely this is so with other punishments: they are all part of a sinner’s spiritual rehabilitation, thus helping make a new beginning possible.

The Power of the Seed

By Tuvia Teldon

Except for a farmer, a gardener, and those who keep to a holistic diet, seeds seem to have very little importance in our lives.

We try to genetically make lines of oranges that don’t have them, we spit them out when we eat watermelons (if they still have them), and we avoid them like the plague if we have diverticulitis.

But if anyone asks me about where you see life’s greatest mysteries, I talk to them about a seed. They are probably the most fascinating part of our world that exists, even more than the unexplored brain.

Think about it. This little tiny seed is basically a treasure-chest of DNA, prepared to (in the right circumstances) give birth to any of a variety of beings.

Look around you. Probably the chair you are in came from a seed, the clothes you are wearing, the walls or paneling of the house you live in, almost all the food you eat, and last but not least—you and another 6 billion people (including all of their brains), all came from a seed.

But what does this have to do with life’s mysteries?

Well, let’s start by looking at a computer chip. Considering that it has so much information, it stands on its own as quite an accomplishment, the result of hundreds of brilliant patents.

It can be as small as the tip of a needle, but

contains within it the programming data for controlling very technical and complicated bits of knowledge. It took many years of science to design it to function properly, and it can perform PDQ\ IXQFWLRQV VLPXOWDQHRXVO\ LQ IXOˉOOLQJ LWVpurpose of carrying the information needed for the proper functioning of your computer.

Now let’s take an orange seed. It contains within it all the DNA info that exists about growing a tree, with all the complications: photosynthesis, establishing roots, transferring water and minerals to its body parts, sprouting in season—all this while creating oranges and seeds that will propagate future generations of oranges. However, even though the orange seed is much larger than a computer chip, it has one incredible quality that a computer chip does not have.

It is programmed to transform itself into the very object about which it contains information.

This would be comparable to creating a computer chip that is programmed to convert itself into an iPhone, or a golf ball, or another seed. Modern computer technology is just beginning to talk about the possibility of having chips that can become something besides the chip itself.

If that doesn’t pique your interest, add to this the fact that an animal or human seed is much more complicated than an orange seed, and a small fraction of the size of the smallest computer chip, and it grows to be something much more complicated than an orange tree. It has the ability to impregnate an egg, and merge its data immediately with it to be able to create a completely new type of living being (with unique features unlike any other). Put together all of this, and so much more information that we know about seeds, and we begin to realize that we are dealing with a biological creation that is truly beyond amazing in its scope, and complicated far beyond its small size.

The seed is one part of our universe that gives XVDVPDOOJOLPSVHLQWRWKHLQˉQLWHLQWHOOLJHQFHbehind the creation and the functioning of our world.

So next time you spit out a watermelon seed, do it with respect for what that seed is.

After all, you came from one.

Your Help Needed!By Naftali Silberberg

Decades of forced labor and vicious oppression had all but broken the proud spirit of the Israelite soul. But now the

tables were turning; the slave masters were paying dearly for their crimes, while the now-out-of-work Israelites awaited the moment of their impending redemption.

But this wasn’t just about settling scores, rescuing the oppressed and exacting vengeance from the oppressors. A loftier objective was now waiting to be put into motion: “Let My people go so that they will serve Me.” The Israelites were now destined to receive the Torah and the mitzvot, through which they would connect with G-d.

Though the majority of the mitzvot were transmitted to the Israelites at Sinai, a select few were chosen to be given beforehand. In fact, they were yet in Egypt when they received WKHLU YHU\ ˉUVW PLW]YDK 6RPH ˉIWHHQ GD\Vbefore the Exodus, Moses relayed to them G-d’s command: it’s time to establish a new calendar. No more solar-based calendar; henceforth we must follow a lunar-based calendar.

Odd, no? What is so special about this mitzvah WKDW LW DEVROXWHO\ FRXOGQȠW ZDLW"$QG WKH ˉUVWmitzvah, no less?

This mitzvah is always read from the Torah shortly before Passover, in a special reading called Parshat Hachodesh. Perhaps the timing of this reading—when Jews worldwide are preoccupied with methodically ridding their homes from any trace of chametz—will answer this question.

The mystical texts explain that all that WUDQVSLUHVRQWKLVSK\VLFDOUHDOPLVDUHˊHFWLRQof a deeper spiritual reality. Thus, the endeavor to rid our property of any chametz—dough WKDW KDV OHDYHQHG RU ȢLQˊDWHGȣȞLV D SK\VLFDOmanifestation of our spiritual effort to rid ourselves of unhealthy arrogance and pride.

On a similar note, G-d’s intervention on behalf of an enslaved and helpless nation was the SK\VLFDOUHˊHFWLRQRIRXUVSLULWXDOHPDQFLSDWLRQWe were helplessly enslaved to our desires and unholy lifestyles. We had neither the tools nor the fortitude to free ourselves. And then on that fateful Passover night more than 3,300 years ago years ago—and reoccurring annually every Passover ever since—G-d redeemed us. Despite our pathetic state, He yanked us out and set us on the path leading to Sinai, meaning and holiness.

But are these two ideas an oxymoron? If the point of Passover is that G-d redeems us despite ourselves, why the need to rid ourselves of chametz—both the physical and spiritual varieties? Passover is considered our “national birthday”—does a fetus prepare for its own birth?

It would seem that there is one precondition to successfully embarking on a new path, and that is a complete disavowal of all previous ones. We must rid ourselves of any pride we may have in our current situation and accomplishments in order to allow G-d to bring us to a better place.

This is also the message G-d was giving the -HZVZLWK+LVˉUVWFRPPDQGPHQW:HDOOZDQWto be like the new reborn moon, which steadily grows until it reaches full luminescence. But when does the new moon appear? Only after it is momentarily completely hidden from sight. Rebirth can only occur after a complete rejection of all that preceded that moment.

Passover is coming. G-d wants to redeem us. Let’s not let our pride stand in the way.

The Month Of Nissan

This week we read about the designation of Nissan as the 1st of the months of the \HDU ,Q IDFW ZH ˉQG QR QDPHV IRU DQ\

PRQWKV LQ WKH 7RUDK MXVW QXPEHUV 7KH ˉUVWPRQWKXQWLOWKHWZHOIWKPRQWKWKHˉUVWEHLQJNissan. Nachmanides explains that because Nissan is the month of redemption, it is chosen to be the starting point.

Only after the Jews came back from Babylon after the destruction of the 1st Temple do we have names for months: Nissan, Iyar etc. In order, to memorialize the newer redemption, they started using Persian names for months instead of the original number system.

The sages instituted that 30 days prior to any festival the scholar of the city begins to teach the holidays laws. While originally this was to give people time to prepare the animals necessary IRU VDFULˉFHV GXULQJ SLOJULPDJH ZKLFK KDG WRbe unblemished, the custom continued even after the destruction of the Temple. The idea is to familiarize the students and populace with the basic laws of the upcoming holiday and to know what they are required to do.

The Shabbat before the holiday (Shabbat HaGadol), the Rabbi would give a sermon to WKH HQWLUH FRPPXQLW\ EULHˊ\ RXWOLQLQJ WKHbasic requirements of the upcoming holiday. Today, when we have codes which make the laws accessible to all, it is required of every individual to study the laws thoroughly.

It is most important to teach the basic laws, and not get sidetracked with homilies and stories. During the festival itself, the Rabbi must teach the background of the festival, why we celebrate it and the exact events we are commemorating. During Pesach, this means discussing the Scriptural and Talmudic accounts of the Exodus.

The custom is not to say any Tachanun (supplications) during this month, by funerals there are no eulogies and one should not fast. 7KHUHDVRQIRUWKLVFXVWRPLVWKDWWKHˉUVWdays of the month were festivals, as each day DQRWKHUSULQFHEURXJKWWKHLUWULEHȠVVDFULˉFHLQdedication of the Tabernacle. The 14th day is a celebration because it is when the Pesach lamb was offered and then we have the 7 (8) days of Passover. As the majority of the month has this special sense of holiness, it extends to the entire month.

A bride and groom do fast if their wedding is during Nissan, even if the wedding is on Rosh &KRGHVK 1LVVDQ 'XULQJ WKH ˉUVW GD\V RIthe month, we read the portion in the Torah corresponding to the offering brought by the tribal leader on that day. On the 13th day we read the portion of the Menora, which corresponds to the tribe of Levi.

The pervasive custom amongst Jewish communities is to have a special fund to purchase wheat for Pesach for the poor. They would place a tax on every member of the community (which was determined by living there for 30 days, or expressing a desire to settle in the city) according to their means, to fund this project.

They would then distribute this to all the indigent citizens of the community. While today communities no longer have the ability to tax members, it is still paramount to engage in this essential Mitzva. During this month, which coincides with spring, when one see the trees ˊRZHULQJDQGEORVVRPLQJIRU WKHˉUVW WLPHRIthat year a blessing is made. The text of the blessing is Blessed are You... whose world is not lacking anything, and created good creations DQGJRRGWUHHVWREULQJEHQHˉWWRPDQNLQG

There is a custom to mark the day following Pesach with some celebration as well. The LGHD WKDW 1LVVDQ LV WKH ˉUVW PRQWK RI RXUcalendar gives us insight into the nature of our people. Nissan represents redemption and miraculous, Divine intervention. The foundation and starting point of the Jew is to know that Hashem runs the world and ultimately we are always moving towards redemption.

The Chassid R Yehuda (Yudel) Chein was known to be extraordinarily hospitable. Although he lived in Nevel, a town full of

Chassidim and men great in Torah, Chassidus and Ahavas Yisroel, R’ Yudel surpassed them all.

One day, R’ Yudel found out that the government had drafted two Jewish young men. After giving a large bribe, he called upon his many connections and was able to have them released from the army. As soon as they were freed, they headed for the Chein house. R’ Yudel welcomed them, fed them, and then told them to go back to their learning. One of the bachurim was Dovid Solomon. R’ Yudel said to him, “Dovid, now you have a room and whatever you need. Just sit and learn.”

The two bachurim lived with the family for three years, learning and davening, and they received room and board at the family’s expense.

place to stay due to the danger.

R’ Yudel immediately left his house and began ZDONLQJDURXQGLQWKHKRSHVWKDWKHZRXOGˉQGYehoshua who was a precious Tamim whom the 1.9'KDGWUHDWHGFUXHOO\+HˉQDOO\IRXQGKLPon a bench in a public park with torn, worn-out clothes crawling with lice.

R’ Yudel took him home and began caring for him. His condition was so bad that they had to scrub him for three days until his body stopped swarming with lice.

This outstanding trait of hospitality was something he inherited from his father, the Chassid, R’ Meir Simcha Chein, also from Nevel. The following story took place in 5691/1931, a year before R’ Meir Simcha passed away:

At that time, there lived a Jew in Nevel who knew that the NKVD was after him. He knew that it was a matter of time before they would lay their hands on him and take him away. He managed to escape by the skin of his teeth and the only place he could get to at that hour was the home of R’ Meir Simcha. He wanted to hide in his house until the coast was clear.

R’ Meir Simcha was moser nefesh for the sake of others and despite the enormous danger in hosting and hiding this man, he hid him in the attic.

The NKVD realized the man had escaped and WKH\ ˉJXUHG RXW WKDW RQH RI WKH SHRSOH ZKRcould be hiding him was R’ Meir Simcha. A number of agents went to his house and began questioning him about whether he met that Chassid. R’ Meir Simcha, of course, said no, and the evil ones went on their way, sure that their prey would yet fall into their hands. R’ Meir Simcha was still nervous about the Chassid he had hidden. He knew that the agents could return with reinforcements and turn his house over until they found the “escaped criminal.” He decided to leave Nevel (now in Ukraine) and go and hide in the home of his son, R’ Yudel, who lived at the time with his family in Staraya-Russa, in Russia proper, until the danger would pass.

Before he left, R’ Meir Simcha sent a telegram to his son letting him know he was coming and asking him to meet him at the train station. R’ Meir Simcha knew that unlike many cities,

where the train station was near the city, in Staraya-Russa the station was located on the outskirts of the city.

For various reasons, the telegram did not arrive. When R’ Meir Simcha arrived after a long trip, nobody was there to greet him. He was sure his son would come and he paced the train station calling out, “Yudel, Yudel” now and then. But nobody responded.

In the meantime, one of the wagon drivers went over to him. There were many wagon drivers who hung around the station hoping to take people to their destination. The man whispered to him while winking, “Old man, come with me, I know where you need to go.”

R’ Meir Simcha shrugged. How did the wagon driver know where he needed to go? But the man had spoken to him in a way that earned his trust and he got into the wagon. A while later the wagon driver deposited him at his son’s house.

It was evening and the children had sat down to eat. Mrs. Chein was not at home and R’ Yudel was busy with work, a small candy making business that he had not far away, work that needed to be done secretly because he refused WRZRUNDWDQȢRIˉFLDOȣMREWKDWHQWDLOHG6KDEERVdesecration.

The door suddenly opened and there was 5Ƞ 0HLU 6LPFKD 7KH RQH ZKR LGHQWLˉHG KLPˉUVW ZDVKLVJUDQGVRQ'RYLGȠNH ODWHURI.IDUChabad). Until that day, he had only seen his grandfather twice – at his upsheren and at the wedding of his young aunt which took place in Nevel.

“Where is your father?” asked R’ Meir Simcha.

“At work,” said the boy who was immediately dispatched to call his father home. Dovid was thrilled and he ran to his father’s workplace. He shouted excitedly, “Grandfather came!”

R’ Yudel was most surprised by this announcement. He had not expected such an honored guest on a wintry, snowy day like this. His father had come! He looked at his son for a long moment and then sprang up, grabbed his coat and ran outside in the freezing weather while still holding his coat.R’ Yudel swiftly arrived home where he welcomed his father royally and with great joy.

His father though, looked grave. “You didn’t have time to meet me at the train station? And instead of coming you sent a goy?” he asked in an annoyed tone.

The astonished R’ Yudel stammered and then said he had no idea his father was coming.“But I sent you a telegram!” R’ Yudel assured him that he had not received a telegram.“Then how did the goy at the train station know where to bring me?”

R’ Yudel now understood everything. He said, “Father, the wagon drivers of Staraya-Russa know that when a new Jew comes to town, they need to bring him to my house. They do that in exchange for money that I pay them. So when that wagon driver saw a Jew alone at the station, he brought you straight to me.”R’ Meir Simcha was astounded. He was aware that his son was known as an outstanding host, but to this extent he had not imagined. This incident left a powerful impression on him

Mikvah on the Mountain: One Woman’s MiracleShlucha to Nepal Chani Lifshitz tells the story of Limor and Amir, a young Israeli couple who, after ten years of trying, had given up on their dream of having a child.

When the newsboy walks the streets of Kathmandu, I know it’s exactly 7:30 a.m. Bleary-eyed shopkeepers surface from

dusty caravans, on the way to the river for their morning ablutions.

The rags that cling to the bodies of the rickshaw runners are no protection from the chill that spills off the white-topped mountains surrounding us. “That’s it, Chani. I’m stuck,” she tells me the moment I open the door. “Completely stuck.” In a second, she’s over the threshold and falling onto our couch. She doesn’t need to say any more. The sadness of her face tells a whole story.

I’m quiet together with her.

For several days, Limor sits, silent and thoughtful, in the Chabad House. Once in awhile, she asks about this or that, but most of the time she sits, mute, observing the joyous youths around her with a bleak countenance. Her husband sits at her side, frowning and serious. We never hear him speak.

“It’s just not going to work out between us,” she ˉQDOO\WHOOVPHVLWWLQJXSRQWKHFRXFKȢ,WȠVMXVWnot going to work.”

And then their troubles began. A year. Two years. Three. They looked with yearning at the families around them. They listened to the peals of childish laughter. They smelled the scent of a newborn that wasn’t theirs.

Why? Why did everyone else have a baby, but not them?

“It wasn’t for lack of trying,” she explains. “There wasn’t a specialist that we didn’t consult. There wasn’t a treatment that we didn’t try. Everyone said the same thing: It’s not going to happen.” Their dreams were shattered. The light left her husband’s eyes. Disagreement became a permanent houseguest. They forgot when they last smiled at each other, just smiled, like the innocents they once were.

Before abandoning their sinking marriage, they decided to make one last effort. They stopped the injections and the treatments and dismally loaded their backpacks “to clear our heads and to get as far away as possible,” she says. “First, to Nepal, and then afterwards, to India and maybe also China. If travel wouldn’t help us recover what had been destroyed, then there was no hope.”

The tears fall as she cries out that even this didn’t help! She buries her head in my shoulder, sobbing.

“Limor. I want you to come with me to immerse,” I tell her, putting my hand on her hand. My stomach is churning. To immerse? Where did I get such an idea just now? She leaps back, away from my touch.

“To immerse? Like, in a mikvah? Why should I all of a sudden want to immerse in a mikvah?” She rises from the couch. “I already immersed in amikvah before our wedding. That was enough for me. No, thank you!”

“But you don’t understand! Come with me to immerse. Perhaps this will help you have a child!”

What got into me? I can’t understand it. It’s so not like me! How can I say this with such

FRQˉGHQFH",WȠVMXVWWKDWLQWKLVPRPHQW,IHHOthat I am a pipeline. That I’m bringing her a message from another world.

She looks at me, angry and disappointed. “How can you say such a thing? For 10 years, I’ve been going from doctor to doctor, and not one of them could help me have a child. You know me for a minute-and-a-half, and you think you can help me?” The pain in her hazel eyes pierces my soul. She strides hastily to the door.

A moment before she can grab the doorknob, I catch her hand. I look deep into her eyes and ask her to listen to me for just one more moment.

“We don’t have a mikvah here, Limor,” I explain. “We immerse in the river. It’s an hour-and-a-half ride, and then it takes another hour to climb the mountain to get to a freezing river! We break the ice! Literally!” Tears roll down my cheeks. Where did they come from?

“I want you to come with me to immerse,” I plead. “I want you to help me break the ice, and in this merit, may G-d bless you with a child!”

Her cold hands slowly warm in mine. The look in her eyes softens. “Where have you come from, Chani?” she murmurs. “How have you gotten to me? Enough. We’ve already given up. And … and … what about Amir? He’s not at all religious. We don’t believe in those things. What am I going to tell him?”

I calm her, tell her not to worry. My husband Chezki will talk to Amir.

Her inner turmoil slowly subsides. The sun shining through the window streaks her face. “Come, Chani,” she tells me. “Let’s go to the river.”

I tell her now is not the time. First, I want to be sure that she understands the magnitude and sanctity of the mikvah, as well as the requisite laws.

She comes to my home for the next couple of weeks. We sit and talk about what purity means. We talk about the power of the Jewish woman, and her own power. Limor’s eyes are still. She barely touches the coffee or the cinnamon buns I set out for her.

A sharp smell of sweat envelopes us. The road twists and turns.

6HYHUDO WLPHVZHˉQGRXUVHOYHVKDQJLQJRYHUdeep gorges, with only a step between us and oblivion. Each time that happens, I sneak a fearful glance at Limor, but she’s beaming. None of this disturbs her.

Nature sings to us as we alight from the bus. We’re surrounded by the white peaks of the Himalayas. Monkeys dance from tree to tree. The green blends in with the blue sky. I’m already used to these surroundings, but Limor is enthralled.

I know it’s the simplicity of this place where my husband and I merited to be emissaries—primitive Nepal, where for most of the day, there’s no electricity, there’s not always water in the taps, the poverty is disgraceful, and the infrastructure is lacking—that draws so many souls to us. We’ve learned to use the stumbling EORFNVDQGWKHGLIˉFXOWLHVWREHFRPHVWURQJHUand more resourceful.

We still have an hour’s climb ahead of us. By the time we get there, the sun will have set, and the stars will be shining. The climb is long and exhausting, but I try to help pass the time by telling stories of righteous women who would go to immerse each month, regardless of circumstance.

I’ve accompanied tens of women who were initially wary of immersion up the steep grade I’m climbing now with Limor. Their hearts melt

when they hear stories of women breaking the ice to immerse in the river. This natural feminine experience is enchanting. It’s just them and their Creator, while the mountains surrounding them whisper their prayers.

It’s pitch-dark when we get there, but I know every rock and could walk here with my eyes shut. Limor’s face shines like the moon. We KDUGO\ QHHG WKHPLQHUȠV ˊDVKOLJKW WKDW ,ZHDUon my head. “Come, Limor,” I say before we reach the river. “Come, sit with me for just a moment. There’s a song I love to sing before immersing. Listen to the words.” The babbling waters of the river sing with us. The birds are silent. “May this hour be a time of mercy, a time in which Your heavenly will accompanies us.” Limor sings after me, word for word. Her head rests on my shoulder. We hold hands.

“A time of mercy, a time in which Your heavenly will accompanies us … ” I take an axe from my pack and go to break the ice on the river. Limor shivers, not just from cold. A soft cry escapes her as she enters the water. “It’s freeeeeezing!” Her cries rise straight to G-d’s throne. When she steps out of the river, the stars descend to meet her.

I honor the pure, silent moment, and neither of us sully it with speech. I just hug her and pray. We sit on the steep path. Two women in the center of creation.

Praying.

Pleading.

The next day, she sets off with Amir to India, and from there to China. We lose touch. I try HYHU\ZKLFKZD\WRˉQGRXWZKDWKDVEHFRPHof her, but can’t. She is just … gone.

Until, 10 months later, the phone rings. Limor is RQWKHOLQH$WˉUVWDOO,FDQKHDULVFU\LQJ

Then she tells me they experienced a miracle yesterday. They had a baby girl. They are calling her Nesyah (“miracle of G-d”).

Advice for Life from Rabbi Sholom DovBer of Lubavitchas recorded by Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn

Destiny:KHUHYHU\RXPD\ˉQG\RXUVHOIȝZKHWKHUIRUan extended period of time, a short stay, or even a brief stopover – know that there is a divine objective waiting for you to accomplish in this place. In this location you are meant to recite a blessing or pray—and since the creation of the world this place is waiting for you to arrive and recite that blessing or pray.

PurposeG-d created the universe and all physical objects ex nihilo, something from nothing. We then must transform the “something” back into “nothing,” i.e., transform the material into spiritual. The task of turning the physical into spiritual and making the physical into an instrument for the spiritual, is a personal obligation. Every single person, individually, is required to do this.

TimeOne should always see to it that tomorrow should be much better than today.

EducationIt is an absolute duty for every person – whether deeply learned or simple – to spend a half hour every day thinking about the Jewish-education of children, and to do everything in his power – and beyond his power – to inspire children to follow the path along which they are being guided.

TruthTruth is the middle path. An inclination to the right, to be overly stringent with oneself DQG ˉQG IDXOWV RU VLQV QRW LQ DFFRUGZLWK WKHtruth, or an inclination to the left, to be overly indulgent, covering one’s faults or being lenient in the demands of divine service out of self-love—both these ways are false.
