Bechukosai—Nasty Neighbors are a Blessing in Disguise
Vayikra 26:17 “…you will flee but there is no one chasing you”
O nce a Jew came to the Gaon Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein of
Bnei Brak and complained that his neighbor, for no ap-
parent reason, was causing him immense grief, and making his life
totally miserable. Rav Zilberstein shocked the person by replying
that he should be a very happy man that he had such a neighbor.
The man, visibly stunned by this response, asked for an explana-
tion. Rav Zilberstein explained that the Vilna Gaon asked a ques-
tion on the verse above. Granted that to be pursued is a curse, but
to find out that there is fact no one chasing you is surely a relief!
This however is a mistaken assumption. In Koheles 3:15 King Solo-
mon states: “HaShem seeks out one who is pursued”. This means
that the very fact that you are being relentlessly harassed is a mer-
it for you. It indicates that HaShem wishes to prevent any harm
from befalling you. However if there is really no one in pursuit,
then you do not even have this merit. The fact that your neighbor
is making your life miserable means that HaShem will feel that
much closer to you. For this fact alone you should be grateful to
your nasty neighbor!!

our Torah knowledge and skill to decide cases that were presented to a Jewish
court. Come and enjoy Zemiros, beer, and a Dvar Torah! Thursdays 8:15 pm,

KIRUV KOLLEL WITH MICHAEL ABRAMSON On Sundays at 8:45 am in the
library. We will cover Gemara, the Six Constant Mitzvahs, Hilchos Kiruv, the hala-
chos of money, and dikduk. Basic Hebrew reading skills required.
GEMARA Rabbi Cohen’s 6:50 am Gemara class is learning the Sanhedrin 5a—
one expert Judge.
RAMBAM: Join Dr. Arnie Ross, Dr. Michel Mazouz, and Marshall Jaffe for a 7:30
am Rambam class in the Seminar Room.

“Hilchos Birkas Kohanim”.

WOMEN’S EXPLANATORY SERVICE Led by female leaders in the community,
this special women’s explanatory service will take place EVERY OTHER WEEK
from 10:30-11:25am. OFF this Shabbos.

What does Hashem Want From You?: Come hear the direct answer! Taught by
Michael Abramson at 11:30 on Shabbos morning in the library. This week: “What
does Hashem ask of you?”
10th Chapter of the Gemara, Sanhedrin. This is about mashiach, olam ha Bah,
and techias ha meisim. L’zecher neshmas/In memory of Eliyahu ben Yosef. On
Shabbos afternoon, One hour before Mincha, taught by Michael Abramson.
