This however is a mistaken assumption. In Koheles 3:15 King Solo- mon states: “HaShem seeks out one who is pursued”. This means that the very fact that you are being relentlessly harassed is a mer- it for you. It indicates that HaShem wishes to prevent any harm from befalling you. However if there is really no one in pursuit, then you do not even have this merit. The fact that your neighbor is making your life miserable means that HaShem will feel that much closer to you. For this fact alone you should be grateful to your nasty neighbor!! Good Shabbos, Rabbi Cohen

Bechukosai—Nasty Neighbors are a Blessing in Disguise

Vayikra 26:17 “…you will flee but there is no one chasing you”

O nce a Jew came to the Gaon Rav Yitzchok Zilberstein of

Bnei Brak and complained that his neighbor, for no ap-

parent reason, was causing him immense grief, and making his life

totally miserable. Rav Zilberstein shocked the person by replying

that he should be a very happy man that he had such a neighbor.

The man, visibly stunned by this response, asked for an explana-

tion. Rav Zilberstein explained that the Vilna Gaon asked a ques-

tion on the verse above. Granted that to be pursued is a curse, but

to find out that there is fact no one chasing you is surely a relief!

This however is a mistaken assumption. In Koheles 3:15 King Solo-

mon states: “HaShem seeks out one who is pursued”. This means

that the very fact that you are being relentlessly harassed is a mer-

it for you. It indicates that HaShem wishes to prevent any harm

from befalling you. However if there is really no one in pursuit,

then you do not even have this merit. The fact that your neighbor

is making your life miserable means that HaShem will feel that

much closer to you. For this fact alone you should be grateful to

your nasty neighbor!!
