On Monday Sharon’s Cakes in Shelburne was busier than usual, thanks to a film crew from Slice television filming a spin off of the Rich Bride Poor Bride show, Rich Groom Poor Groom that is set to air in April 2011. Rich Groom Poor Groom is coming to view- ers in Canada via Slice and the creators of the interna- tional hit series Rich Bride Poor Bride. This new series features grooms who are stepping up to the challenge of planning their wedding, without any input from their bride-to-be. A $5000 addition to the wedding budget is the payoff each bride gets for being kept in the dark about any deci- sions the groom makes, including the wedding dress. “We’re into our sixth season of Rich Bride Poor Bride and what we were seeing is that oddly enough it’s not always a bride’s day,” said Sean Buckley, co-creator and Executive Producer of Rich Groom Poor Groom, and owner of Buck Productions. “We’ve seen some pret- ty extraordinary grooms come through and some- times you couldn’t believe what was happening, the grooms were wanting to take over the wedding, really wanting to press their vision forward, really wanting to be a bigger part of the day. We basically wanted to give the groom their day.” According to Sharon Morden, owner of Sharon’s Cakes, Ken Seeback, the Associate Producer of Rich Groom Poor Groom, contacted her two weeks ago, letting her know they were inter- ested in using her shop during filming for episode 13, featuring local groom and bride-to-be Cel Matheson and Michelle Cinnamon. “”The format of Rich Bride Poor Bride is so sound that it could weath- er a spin-off series; not a lot of shows can,” said Mr. Buckley. “The wedding is in Mount Forest,” said Mrs. Morden. She commented that they were looking for a place to shoot a wedding cake scene that was some- where in the area of the wedding. “I sent them a video of the layout of my place,” said Mrs. Morden. “I sort of walked them through and sent it off and they thought the place would be conducive to what they needed.” “Organically, all the vendors are recognized,” said Mr. Buckley. “This couple seeks Sharon out because she was capable, as a designer, to achieve what the groom’s vision was.” He said Sharon was picked to appear on the show because of her tal- ent. “The groom had sourced Sharon out, the groom had in a sense rec- ognized that this was the artist that could achieve his vision.” Sharon has been baking and decorating cakes for 29 years. She started out taking a night school course at a high school in Bolton where she grew up. She went from being a stu- dent to teaching classes of her own and finally to hav- ing her own shop. “I just love making things out of sugar that you can eat,” she said. “It’s really motivating and inspiring that people are taking so much of an inter- est (in cake baking).” She said her home/busi- ness is 113 years old and the spot where they were doing a lot of the filming was on the old hard wood floor. “They do this sound test where everybody has to be stay quiet so they can tape the sound in the room with nothing happening and all you could hear the occasional (squeaking sound) from the floor,” she said. “We had to be careful about how much we moved because the micro- phones were really sensi- tive.” She commented that before filming, the crew removed anything from the room that would sug- gest where Sharon’s Cakes is located. “On TV they don’t want you to know what town you’re in, they want you to be able to see the show so that it can apply anywhere,” she explained. According to Mrs. Morden, the whole experi- ence on Monday was “really interesting” and “a lot of fun.” Orangeville Citizen/Free Press and Economist December 9, 2010 A5 By LINDSEY P APP Staff Reporter Wise customers read the fine print: •, , *, ††, § The Deck the Driveway Holiday Event offers apply to retail deliveries of selected new and unused models purchased between December 1, 2010 and January 3, 2011 from participating retailers. DESCRIPTION

Sharon's Cakes in Shelburne is a small cake shop that was the backdrop for filming a spin off of the Slice television show Rich Bride Poor Bride. I enjoyed writing this article because it was more of an entertainment topic than hard news or charitable fundraisers.
