Lighting

Page 2: Shauna, kitty, shanon

The boy is lit from one side, so one half of his face is in shadow. It makes him look as if he is in a dark place and gives two sides to him. He may be abused at home or hiding a dark secret at home that he shelters from the public.

This is lit harshly from above. It accentuates her main features but leaves the rest of her in shadow, as if she’s leaning in to the camera to get close to the audience or to make the audience feel as if she is watching them.

ShanonThis backlight shadows the girl. This looks like an example of bad photography and we will be careful when filming not to pose our actors directly in front of a window to avoid this effect.

The lighting of the face on just one side and from the front creates a deep shadow on the left side of her face and darkness behind her. This makes the audience think that she is keeping a secret and is hiding something.

The light is coming from underneath. This automatically makes the person look sinister as it creates lots of deep shadows throughout his face. This lighting would most likely be used on a ‘villain’ or on another character to mislead the audience about whether they are actually evil.

This photo creates mystery because of the amount of darkness in the photo. It doesn’t allow the audience to know what is happening or find out what the person is like. To me the person in this seems like they are spying on someone so don’t want to be exposed to too much light. This creates an eeriness to the photo. The shadowing of one eye also creates a sinister effect, as does the positioning of the hair over the face, which can just be picked out by the highlighting of some of the finer hairs.

A key light and a hair light from the right was used to make this picture. This photo is taken from the side of her and so this could give the impression that she is on a stage and we are watching her from somewhere we are not suppose to be, as we are not looking at her face on. The front of her face is brightly lit and we feel that this is the side of her being presented to the public, and we are looking at the private side.

A single hard light was used to create this picture. The shadows on her face could suggest she has a secret she is hiding. Or the contrast between the dark shadows on her face and the brightness of her hair could show how she has a split personality, and has a contrast between good and bad in her personality. The way the lighting hits the hair is flattering, but the shadowing of the eye is what helps to take away from the positive impression.

This photo uses a soft underlight to create the picture. The colouring suggests flames, so this shot could possibly be lit by a candle or a torch. The shadows on his face as well as the facial expression creates an eerie atmosphere and could suggest that he is about to do something very bad, like kill someone, out of anger. Underlighting creates dark shadows round the eyes which is the most spooky element of the image.
