Charles, the enigma! Despite having lived in 'Natal for' some 68years, except for some photographs, and brief memories by hisremaining dp.scendants, I have been unable to trace anythingconcrete concer-njng Charles' contribution as one of South Airica'spioneers. Not even his handwriting!

Looking at the map, "Alford", where Cha.rle,s'was born, liE'S ~lmost.midway beb<Jeen the Humber' and The ~..Jash,Engla,nd. and not too fClI-dis tant from the coast of the North Sea. From the ilia p tllE;"',.even

While further research, at a cost, might .reveal m01-e detail, nothinllis known of Charles, prior to the time he boarded the "SDv!:'reign"on 24th November, 18l+9 at Plymouth, as a Byrnes Sett, ler, undE'r theauspices of '-'JilliamIron's "Christian Colonization Scheme", 101-Wesleyans of good standing. The family Bible, presently in ,the possession of Desmond Sha\'J,(great-grandson) one of two direc,t male' descendants, was presentedto Charles and his wife by Jos Shaw (Joseph, Josiah, Joshua) on14th January, 1874, only compounds the mystery! Who was Jo~, ShiH.J:.'

Schooling was. unlikely to have been a problem" as . there was. aschool at Verulam, but how many of the' boys were sent to schoolat York (near Grey town>, we do not know except that Charles' Edwardwas drowned while attending a school pk'nk at Albert F aIls on 19thOctober, 1878, and was buried in the York cemetery. Frederick, andHOI-ace, then aged 14 and 11 years are both recorded as havingattended Maribburg Ctlliege from lEi88. Arthur and Thomas., then 18and 16 years old no doubt, completed their. schooling at some otherschool in Pietel-maritzburg. .Likewise, the religious needs of the early set tIers were ca ter"edfo,-. A large plague in the Methodist church, Veru1C1m, gives thenames of 31 families of early WesleyaA se ttlers . who "Jars hippedthen~.. Included amongs t them is C. Shaw.

I doubt whether Charles WClS entirely successful' on his 1C1rm"Balmain" at Verulam, and the receipt of a fai,- pt-ice 101- the groundmay. have persuaded him to move to Pietermaritz.bw"g during 1880.

,Also the drowning of his son Charles Edward, in 1878, may have beenan added incentive.. .

In Pietermaritzburg I understand, Charles, in due course becameeithe,- a partner or 'had a direct interes t in the hardware andwagon-building business of "Merry 'Weather's", situated on the cornerof Boshoff and Church Streets. directly 'opposite the' t'letttodistchurch. He must have prospered, because in due course he built.his own home, and la ter he and Ann moved to live ~\lith their'daughter, Ellen, and son-in-law, George MacGowCln at 269 Pr inc:eAlfred Street.

Although presumably, not members 'of the Bostm'ff !;;t,rp.E' tcongl-egation Charles and Ann, made CI gift of the church hi' :.1 towhich a plague with the' date October 1904 bears testimony. I doubttheir membership of this particular congrega tion as their home ~"asfar nearer the Central Methodist church in Chapel street~ whereChar les, also served as a lay preacher.

So where did Charles find money 'to donate gifts?he made a substantial amount from an investment ingold shares perhaps -. with his son-in-law Georgelatter is said to have been a very shrewd man.

A belief is tha tJohannesbur'g --

There is far too much specula tion and presumption in wha t I havewritten but one fact defies 'denial, and. that is that Ann was tIlE'dominant figure of the two. Memory tells us tha t for ins tance IrJhena gift or dona tion wa~ made it came from Mr and r'1rs C. Sha~'J. ~ncinot just in his name. Perhaps Ellen and George, were over stric:t parents, or perhapsEllen., was too fun loving or flighty .but she at some stage bec:amea tramp and disappeared from sight. The belief is held that had.she laid c:laim to Ellen's e~tate. on her death she might well havebeen suc:c:ess ful in upsetting the c:onsiderable amount left to'various organisa tions and family members.

Considered by the family to be 'a "c:anny sc:ot'" George was a weal thyman. Was manager of Steele 'and Murra.y in Pietermaritzburg andboth Charles and Ann lived in' his home towards the end of their

On his retirement George and Ellen liv~d at Anerley, where he died, and Ellen then moved to Durban where she eventually passed away. .Her anti Ca tholic: feelings are reflec:ted in her will of which I holda c:opy. Very c:are1ul by nature Ellen, abhorred waste even to theextent of people using too muc:h wa ter in their ba th, despite thefac:t that she was not paying for the' water.
