STRENGTH, FLEXIBILITY AND ENDURANCE:

Turns out, what it takes to climb a mountain – is what it takes to run a business.

IT’S BEEN A WILD TREK THESE PAST FEW YEARS. LIKE EV-ERYONE, WE FACE CHALLENGES DAILY, AND IT HASN’T BEEN EASY. In Nepal, almost all the garment factories have shut down for one reason or another. And yet, the few we own and run continue production. Operating a business in a land-locked country means everything has to be imported. And when there are roadblocks at the borders, it means delays in the delivery of the materials we need for production. And when the power runs only 16 hours a day, we have to shift to generators and work odd hours. And these are just a few of the hurdles that make it stressful when there are commitments to honor and delivery dates to meet.

But we strive to be responsive and adaptable to whatever comes up – versus reactive. And the willing and able people we work with do the same. Our loyal customers continue to support us. And I think this is why we’re still here.

It’s like climbing a mountain. You start at base camp and work your way up. Along the way, there are crevasses to cross, and avalanches to survive, and times when you question everything, and wonder what you’re doing and why. But then you walk into Camp 4, and it’s like: Wow. I made it this far by putting one foot in front of the other; I’m going to see this through.

Our goal was not to be a huge brand – just one that’s big on integrity. We make gear that’s on par with the best, and we do it in a way that’s respectful to the people we hire and the planet we share. 95% of our line is made in our own factories, which allows us to control our margins – and pass the savings on our customer. Bottom line: We’re not in this to make a quick buck; we’re in it to make a positive contribution socially, eco-nomically, and environmentally – so that the end result adds up to more than just profit. This way, everyone wins.

At a time when many consider it a luxury to stay committed to environmental ethics, we’ve reaffirmed our “green” intention by creating a line called Ecolibrium. Every piece in it is made with materials and processes that are easier on the earth by nature or practice (see page 60).

We remain steadfast in our commitment to social responsibility, continuing our support and recognition of the Sherpa people, and treating our employees with the respect they deserve. A percentage of every sale goes to foundations that aid in the education of Nepalese children. We employ many Sher-pas and collaborate with a school in Kathmandu to provide internships for those with a talent for design or merchandising. We sponsor Sherpa athletes. We partner with local cottage industries and purchase the high-quality, hand-crafted prod-ucts they create. And our 150 employees in Nepal receive full medical benefits, continuous training, and allowances for meals.

In Fall 09, we will open our new Nepali headquarters in Kath-mandu. There, travelers can get the supplies they need at the Sherpa Gear House, our Flagship retail store, savor a good meal at our café, and rest-up in our bed-and-breakfast-style lodging (check out page 80 for more details).

We know that finding gear that feels good – not just on your body, but to your heart and soul – is important to you. And it feels good and right to us to be a part of that. That’s what keeps me inspired, even when times are tough.

Namaste,

—Tashi Sherpa, Founder and President

THE LAYER YOU PUT NEXT TO YOUR SKIN is probably the most important – and most versatile – thing you will pack. It serves as the conductor between you and the world “out there,” moving moisture away from your skin so you feel dry and comfortable even if you’re working up a sweat. And, depending on

what the weather is doing, it can be worn on its own or under other layers. We use materials that incorporate the latest technologies to ensure you get the best performance available – like our proprietary Dry Zone® “smart” fabric, naturally odor-resistant bamboo charcoal, and easy-on-the-earth, itch-free Merino wool.

THINK OF THESE AS INSULATION FOR THE HOUSE CALLED YOUR BODY. Their job is to gather up body heat and hold it. Most of the time, you’ll be wearing one as an easy warm-up over a base layer. And when the weather dictates a need to throw a shell on top, the streamlined silhouette makes for a hitch-

free, low-bulk, less-constrictive layering experience. When you get to the tea house and it’s time to shed the shell, the handsome styling will add grace to any situation. We leave the social skills to you.

Gentleman Sardar Conquers the Seven Summits by Tsering Yuthok Short

AS HE ENTERED THE HUMIDITY OF THE LUSH RAINFOREST, Lakpa Rita Sherpa must have known that each step drew him closer to an extraordinary place in mountaineering history. He was at the start of the circuitous Machame Route up Mt. Kilimanjaro, and by the morning of February 13th, 2009, as he stood on the summit of Uhuru Peak on Mount Kilimanjaro (Uhuru means ‘freedom’ in Swahili), he became the first Nepali Sherpa to conquer the Seven Summits – the highest peaks on every continent.

A professional mountain guide and expert alpinist, Lakpa Rita Sherpa is known as much for his skilled leadership, as for his down-to-earth humility. He’d much rather discuss the unique beauty of the highest peak in the African continent, and the team effort it took to get there successfully, than talk about his accomplishments. Lakpa found Mount Kilimanjaro “extremely beautiful and interesting.” He enjoyed the culture and hospi-tality of the Tanzanian people, the friendly camaraderie of the expedition guides, and the boisterous, traditional Swahili songs that were sung at the pinnacle of the five-day ascent. He found his new friends both different, and similar to his own people, the Sherpas. At 19,340 feet, Kilimanjaro is a relatively easy undertaking for one who has summited Everest thirteen times, but Lakpa never focuses on this. Instead, he talks of the unforgettable beauty of the climb, the spectacular sunrise, and the magnificent vistas of dry mountain desert, famed glaciers, and expansive Kenyan landscape.

Lakpa’s illustrious career as an expert high-altitude mountain climber and Sardar (a commander of Sherpas) has spanned over 19 years. In the world of mountaineering, high-altitude mountaineers are a select group: they tackle the rigors of technical mountain climbing on peaks of at least 8000 meters – the highest in the world being Mt. Everest, which straddles the border of Tibet and Nepal. It is important to distinguish those who challenge the highest peaks in the world on their own abilities and talents, from those who are helped up the mountain, literally and figuratively, by climbing assistants, porters, or fellow expedition members. Not only has Lakpa summited Everest thirteen times, he’s done so while simultaneously providing technical climbing support, expertise, and leader-ship to others. He truly is a remarkable and talented mountaineer and sardar.

While most Seven Summit seekers are content to climb each peak once, Lakpa’s full-time mountain guide career has taken him to the top of Aconcagua (S. America) 22 times, the top of Vinson Massif (Antarctica) twice, and of course, Mt. Everest over a dozen times. Tashi Sherpa, President of Sherpa Adventure Gear, smiles when he reflects on Lakpa Rita Sherpa’s history-making achievement: “Lakpa-la’s tremendous accomplishments as a mountaineering guide aside, he is truly a good person – humble and genuine.”

Growing up as a young boy in the Everest region of Thame, Nepal, Lakpa never dreamed he would traverse seven continents and mix it up with the best climbers in the world. Yet at 6:10 a.m. on that lucky Friday the 13th – as Lakpa, American alpinist Joe Puryear, and the porters and guides of the Chagga people reached the summit of Kilimanjaro under a sun-streaked sky – he had done just that. From the “Roof of the World” to the “Roof of Africa,” Lakpa Rita became the first Sherpa to reach the highest points of every continent on earth.

YOU ALREADY KNOW THE SECRET OF STAYING COMFY IN FICKLE WEATHER and changing activity levels: layering. What goes on first is probably the most crucial component. It’s got to manage the microclimate next to your skin – move moisture out, resist odor retention, and keep you dry. That’s why we make our

base layers in “intelligent” fabrics like Thermo°Cool®, Dry Zone®, bamboo charcoal, and Merino wool. They meet and exceed our high performance expectations. And our streamlined styles don’t feel bulky under other layers.

FROM DAY ONE IT’S BEEN OUR INTENTION TO KEEP OUR ENVIRONMENTAL VALUES ON THE FRONT – not the back – burner. So it’s an understatement to say we are excited to announce the launch of our Ecolibrium line. Everything in it physically embodies our dedication to

lightening our impact on our already over-taxed and fragile planet: A product isn’t included in the Ecolibrium line unless every fabric, every trim, every yarn, and every step of the production path that goes into making it – reflects an environmentally conscientious process or eco-friendly material. And since the line cuts across all categories of clothing – from base layers to hard shells – you can dress from head-to-toe in a Sherpa clothing system that you can feel good about.

WE KNOW THAT FINDING GEAR THAT FEELS GOOD – NOT JUST ON YOUR SKIN, BUT TO YOUR HEART AND SOUL – IS IMPORTANT TO YOU. It’s important to us too. We have always believed that high-quality, effective outdoor gear can be made with less impact on the planet, and so

we are ever-vigilant about examining the materials and processes we use to make all of our gear. This season, we’ve dedicated an entire line to that “green “intention: Ecolibrium. Every material and process that goes into making every piece in this special category is chosen for its environmental friendliness. And since this special line includes everything from next-to-skin base layers to insulating mid-layers to weather warding shells, you can completely outfit yourself in Ecolibrium.

KIDS THAT PLAY OUTSIDE ARE HAPPY KIDS, so everything in this line is designed to keep them comfortable out there – whether the sun is shining or it’s snowing sideways. From our sun-protective shirts to the mid-layers and shells they’ll need to stay warm in winter weather, our clothes are durable, travel well and wash

up with ease. And since kids are harder on their clothes than adults, we don’t compromise on quality: each piece is every bit as good as the stuff their parents are wearing. Once on, hem and hood drawcords can be cinched in to seal out any drafts. This shell has fully seam-taped construction – we don’t cut any corners on our kids’ gear.

• Reversed-out zippers are water-resistant• Reach-across “Napoleon” chest pocket has zipper closure • Contoured seamlines and articulated elbows refine the fit

Jaaro Top \jah-ro\Fuzzy pullover perfection. For starters, it’s got a hood, and we know how much girls love that. And the fabric – the softest, lightest micro-fleece we could get our hands on – is the perfect weight for summer evening bike rides. It also happens to be breath-able, quick-to-dry, and amazing at wicking sweat off the skin. Raglan sleeve design puts seams off the shoulder tops, so there’s nothing to chafe under backpack straps.

• Quarter-zip entry/exit• Princess seaming refines the fit for low-bulk layering under a rain shell • One pocket hides at the waist with a stealth zip closure • Thumbholes at the cuffs keep sleeves down when putting on a shell

Mala Hoodie \ma-la\Girls can be picky about they wear. But you can’t go wrong with the Mala. She won’t be able to resist the cute sportiness of bright stripes, feminine cap sleeves, and kangaroo pocket. The fact that it has a hood will seal the deal. The fabric is more than fun; it’s functional: the waffle knit absorbs and wicks moisture away from the body. The airy weave makes it quick to dry and breathable.

• Flat lock stitching is comfy against the skin • Fabric is inherently odor resistant and sun protective

Gita Short \gee-ta\If summer required a uniform, it would be these shorts. Their stretch cotton fabric is so soft and comfy, they will easily win out over the other shorts in the wardrobe. And there will be no complaints about their style: they ride just a little low on the hips, and have the cargo pockets, wide waistband and extra-wide belt loops girls love. You might need to get a pair in each color.

• Crotch is gusseted for maximum comfort and allows freedom to move • In addition to the two side cargo pockets (with snap-flap closures), there are

two on-seam hand pockets • Fabric has superior wicking action

Temba 2.5-Layer Pant \tem-ba\Spend enough time in the backcountry with your kids, and eventually, you’ll be caught out in an unexpected storm. Make that memory a pleasant one, and your daughter will never give up her love of being outside. Keep her dry and happy in our Temba gear. The pants are made of the same windproof/water-resistant/breathable shell material that we use for our Temba Jacket. And they’re seam sealed too, to keep moisture out.

• Elastic cuffs and waistband make for easy on/off; waistband has interior adjustment drawcord

• One back hip pocket with reversed-out, water-resistant zipper • Knees are articulated for comfort

Vajra Jacket \vudge-rah\Wearing one of our Vajra pieces is like being hugged by a cloud – so don’t be sur-prised when you have trouble getting this jacket off your kid and into the laundry. It’s soft, cozy and warm – and weighs next to nothing. The shell fabric is windproof, water-repellent and resistant to snags and rips. The Primaloft® insulation is known for its ability to retain warmth even when wet – so it’s a great choice when you live in, or travel to, humid or wet destinations.

• Materials are highly compressible, and take up minimal space when packed • Curved seamlines tailor the fit and make the Jacket even more comfortable • Stretchy LYCRA® fiber binding at collar, cuffs, and hem• Hand pockets and reach-across “Napoleon” chest pocket have zipper closures

TRAVELING CAN BE EXHAUSTING. Especially when you’re outside the familiar comfort zone of your home country.

But half the magic of living an adventurous life is discovering those special people and places that make up the memories you’ll never forget. Like stumbling onto a clean, friendly and cozy place to stay for the night – after traveling non-stop for 36 hours by plane, bus and foot. Or taking that first bite of a delicious, home-cooked meal – after trekking more miles than you’ve ever done in a day.

Imagine how you’ll feel upon entering the doors of our new Sherpa Adventure Gear store, which opens in Fall 2009 in Kathmandu, Nepal. From the street, you enter the doors of Sherpa Gear House, our Flagship retail store! There, we carry a full range of Sherpa Adventure Gear products, as well as hardgoods like tents, shoes, climbing and camping supplies from other quality brands. Staffed by multi-lingual Sherpas who have an in-depth knowledge of our line, and who know what it takes to trek and climb the humblest as well as the highest mountains of their home territory, you’ll have no trouble stocking up on everything you need (or forgot to bring) for your next excursion.

With that done, you can think about relaxing. Wander upstairs to the third floor and you’ll find The Terrace, our bed-and-breakfast style guest-house complete with all the creature comforts that make one smile after days of going without: modern bathrooms with hot water, wi-fi, and even flat-screen television. Each room is named for a different region of Nepal. And, coming soon, you’ll be able to enjoy a first-rate cup of coffee and a fine meal at our indoor/outdoor café.

The custom-designed Sherpa Adventure Gear building is also home to our corporate offices, and a research and devel-opment facility for testing and creating the cutting-edge technical gear that is the foundation of our line.

So the next time your travels take you through Kathmandu, be sure to think of our home base as yours: plan to meet up there with old friends, make new ones, and re-fresh your supplies and spirit.

In the meantime, we look forward to welcoming you as our guest.
