Blanket tips for a great fit

A blanket will not stay in place unless it fits properly. A badly fitting blanket will slip and could cause discomfort for the horse and could be strained to breaking point.

How can I tell if the blanket fits?

Measure your horse before you go out to your localtack shop. This can be done with a tape measure. Simply put one end of the tape in the center of yourhorse’s chest and the other end on the horse’s buttocks where you would expect the blanket to finish.Horse blankets are sized in centimeters, inches or feetand inches—make sure you check what size blanket youare getting as a 66" blanket will not fit a 6'6" horse.When you’ve bought the blanket, take it home and tryit on your horse over a clean bedsheet or clean summersheet—make sure you leave all the tags on. If the blanket fits, then remove the tags and use; if not, youmight be able to return the blanket to the retail outletyou purchased it from as long as it is in a saleable condition—check with your retailer at the time you purchase the blanket.

When buying any blanket for your horse , fit is key, andshould never be underestimated. If you’ve bought themost amazing blanket with a whole range of features,it could potentially cause more harm than good if it isill fitting.

The blanket should fit well over the withers and the shoulders so that the horse can move freely without the blanket slipping back.The breast straps should be fastened so that the fabric overlaps underneaththem. The straps should be tight enough to hold the blanket in place, but not so tight that it causes the blanket’s shape to distort on the horse’s back or could cause pressure points around the horse’s chest and wither area.Cross surcingles should be fastened so you can fit a hand’s breadth betweenthe surcingles and the horse’s body. This means that the straps are tightenough to prevent legs becoming caught should the horse lie down, but not so tight that the horse will be uncomfortable.If the blanket has leg straps, they should be fastened so that the left strap is passed around the left hind leg and fastened back to the left side. The right strap should then pass around the right hind leg, loop through the left strap, and then fasten to the right side. There should be about 4–5" between the strap and the horse’s leg to prevent the blanket slipping without causing the horse any discomfort.

We decided to spend a day following our local U.K. hunt. Our sponsored rider, Faye, was dressed in our new Marlborough HuntCoat and Clifton Vest…so it really was for the good of the catalog…honest!

So, at 11am we joined the assembled party of horses, hounds, riders, dogs, followers, well wishers and lots of delicious foodand drink at the designated place for that particular meet. The atmosphere was wonderful—obviously everyone knew eachother, but there was such a range of people and horses who, if you were putting people together in groups you might not haveput together in that way…but it worked incredibly well. The horses were turned out beautifully—scrupulously clean, braided up,sparkling tack and ready for action.

We broke away from the group before they left to get to ‘the punchbowl,’ which is where the field were heading but, on reaching the top of the road it seemed that the hedgewe were planning to look over had not been cut and was far taller than we had hoped…so we were pointed down a track and started walking down that. The setting was veryBritish and autumnal—the trees were various shades or red, amber and russet and, of course, it was incredibly slippery with the mud. I was given the job of Sherpa (which involvescarrying the camera case and monopod) and was told that if I was going to fall over I should try and land on my front to protect the lenses...nice!

Anyway, we carried on down the path until we heard horses’ hooves behind us, at which point we took to the rather prickly hedgerow to let the horses and hounds past.When everyone had passed, we followed on behind and got to the most beautiful spot which dropped fairly steeply down into a valley. At this point the horses andhounds disappeared as they were working in a different part of ‘the punchbowl’. When it was quiet, we saw a variety of wildlife—a muntjac deer ambled into a littlewood, a buzzard was overhead in the sky and all was fairly serene. Not an awful lot happened for a while after that, but then a few hounds picked up the artificial scentthat had been laid earlier that day ran into another area of woodland. They were fairly quickly retrieved by a lot of horn blowing and Faye, who acted as whipper-in forthe day on her ride, Trevor (who happens to be a rather large chestnut gelding who, occasionally, has fairly strong opinions about where he would like to go…but we willget to that bit later!). A variety of strange noises were heard from Faye and the people who were persuading the hounds to go back to the pack and all was well. Whenall the hounds were back in one place, they pick up a scent and started working. They are really amazing animals. When they picked up the scent, they started making astrange noise…almost like the start of a howl which, I was later told, was them speaking to the scent. Their noses were down, sterns wagging and they started in onedirection. The scent was not very strong as they seemed to circle a bit.

The Master (Richard) moved the hounds on and went to assess the surrounding areawhile the horses and riders waited. There was much to-ing and fro-ing with the walkietalkies to discuss the progress and the odd hound seemed to find its way backto the horses. These hounds are really friendly. I was quite surprised.Coffee (the hound that seemed to like staying with the horses) seemed to really enjoygoing to see everyone. When one of the followers’ dogs started to growl at her,she just walked straight past without so much as a glance.

Anyway, we then moved on down another rather slippery track (although everythingfour-legged and two-legged seemed to cope a lot better than we did!) and the horsesand hounds went to another section on that day’s route. It was at that point wemanaged to hitch a lift on a quad which was rather good as we had covered a fewmiles and were set to cover more over the rest of the day. We then heard on the walkietalkie that Faye had become a member of the tumble club…i.e., she had fallen off…in our new jacket! I was assured that the jacket…I mean Faye, was OK (although we do have a rather muddy hunt coathanging up in our showroom…but the less said about that the better!) I think Trevor and Faye had had a slight differenceof opinion…and with Trevor being a good 17.1hh and Faye being about 5'…I don’t think that there was much of a fight!

We took some great photos and followed on foot for a little while…and then hitched a lift with someone who was following the hunt in the car as there was a very steephill to go up and the quad would not have coped at all. We jumped out of the car at the right time and joined the group again…this was then followed by our lift vanishing,no quad bike and a lot of dashing after horses through mud, field, gateways, cows and everything else that the countryside can throw at you.

We followed the group for a little longer before squeezing through a barbed wirefence, picking up a group of horses that we thought were hunting but were eithera) going home from hunting or b) were never involved with the hunt—that just happenedto be walking down a lane that we came across. These horses vanished too (well, theywere a lot faster than w were and they were only walking) and we came out on the roadfairly near where we had started so with no horses in sight. We trundled homeand had some sandwiches, tea and cake…delicious!

We hadn’t followed a hunt before and we had a really eye-opening, interesting andenjoyable day. The mix of people hunting was brilliant, the way people treat each otherwas refreshing, and the atmosphere was one of the nicest I have been in for a while.The hunt and followers work as a team that help get the horses and hounds around thecountryside…and the amount of work that goes into planning just one day of hunting isamazing. The hunt are very respectful of the people they encounter, the land that theyuse and the landowners. When we picked up a couple of people who started to followthe hunt midway, they were greeted politely and warmly and joined in the conversationwith everyone else. The horses were amazingly well looked after—very fit, beautifullyturned out and seemed to be having a brilliant time—as were the hounds who lapped uptheir exercise and the day’s excitement.

I can’t say how impressed we were with how well everything was run—people’sperception of hunting seems to vary enormously, but it is NOT like some people believe.Hunts run in a legal way are not barbaric or any of the other words that they getbranded with—they are well-run operations that provide a service to the communityand to the farmers. In addition to actually hunting, the hunt also provides a service.They take fallen stock, they can help euthanase animals, they work with the farmersin the local community—there really is far more to it all than meets the eye.
