dominate Prashant Chadha's action film AZAAN in June of 2011.

Shot across multiple international locations including France, Romania and Sudan, the sleek production

will be released under the banners of JMJ Entertainment PVT LTD, Alchemia Films and Percept

Picture Company.

The film introduces Energy drink owner Sachin Joshi to Hindi feature films as the hero. Music is by

Salim-Sulaiman and the lyricist is Amitabh Bhattacharya.

According to reports, American singer Shakira will sing a Latin influenced solo dance number for

AZAAN, whose lyrics will be in English with a smattering of Hindi. The song will feature South

the last decade, over 30 foreign actresses have tried their luck in Bollywood as heroines, item numbers

and cameos. With their number on the rise, Screen puts together a dummy’s guide to making the cut in

Hindi cinema

There has been a steady influx of foreign actresses in Bollywood in recent years. In the last decade, 30

foreign actresses have made their debut in Bollywood. Though only British Indian actress Katrina Kaif

has made a mark, that hasn’t deterred aspiring foreign actresses and models from trying their luck in

the big, bad world of Hindi movies.

In the last two years, 11 actresses from various parts of the world made their debut in Bollywood.

While only Jacqueline Fernandez from Sri Lanka and Barbara Mori from Mexico made their debuts as

leading actresses in the high-budget Aladin and Kites, others like Giselli Monteiro, Florence Brudenell-

Bruce, (Love Aaj Kal), Lisa Lazarus (Veer) and Sarah Thompson (Raajneeti) were seen in supporting

roles.

Surprisingly, none of these starlets had any plans of acting in Hindi films. They had successful careers

back home. For instance, Barbara had acted in several Mexican tele-serials like Mirada De Mujer,

Amor Descarado, Rubi and films like La Mujer De Mi Her Mano and Violanchelo. Filmmakers Rakesh

Roshan and Anurag Basu were keen on roping in a Mexican actress who could play the lead role in

Kites. The duo met Barbara and after hearing the film’s story, she agreed to be a part of the project.

Similarly, American actress Sarah Thompson, who has acted in television shows - Angel and House and

movies like Cruel Intentions 2 and Taking Chance - got a call from her manager, asking her if she was

interested in meeting Prakash Jha. He had flown to the US to look for an American actress for

Raajneeti. Since Sarah was always fascinated with India, she agreed to meet him. She heard the film’s

plot and landed the role in the project.

However, now most foreign actresses are aiming for a long innings in Bollywood. Some of these

starlets have bagged at least one movie, after their much-hyped debut. Giselli will be playing the lead

in Red Chillies' latest film that will be released later this year. She is also endorsing Wills Lifestyle, PC

Jewellers and Movil Mobiles. Brazilian hottie Bruna Abdullah, who made her debut with the “item”

number Reham kare in Anubhav Sinha’s Cash, will be sharing screen space with Imran Khan and

Sonam Kapoor in Punit Malhotra’s I Hate Luv Storys.

Latina model Mariah Gomes, who created a stir with her raunchy number Teri neeyat kharab hain in

Leena Yadav’s Teen Patti, is reportedly acting opposite Pratik in Rohan Sippy’s Dum Maaro Dum.

Jacqueline's two films - Aladin and Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hain - might have sunk at the box-office

without a trace, but she will be playing the lead role in Milap Zaveri’s next film. The foreign invasion

has been astounding and the numbers continue to grow. So we spoke to the ladies themselves as well as

a few directors to put together some handy tips to aspiring foreign actresses who want to make it big in

Bollywood.

Look Indian:

The first step is that if you want to land plum roles in Hindi movies, you need to look Indian to fit into

the film industry. So either you are born with it like Giselli and Mariah, who landed their initial projects

thanks to their exotic Indian-like looks, or you need to change your appearance.

Pria Agni, a stylist, who has worked with a lot of foreigners says, “Indians are fascinated with white

skin but they are biased against people with blonde hair. They usually perceive blondes as being

promiscuous. In the earlier days also, vamps like Helen wore blonde wigs whenever they performed

any raunchy “item” number. So almost all foreigners dye their hair black and wear contact lenses to be

accepted in the film industry in conventional roles. That way, Brazilians have an advantage because of

their complexion, dark hair and Indian looks. As long as they are not made to speak, anyone can easily

believe that they are from the sub-continent. For instance, everyone mistook Giselli for an Indian in

Love Aaj Kal.”

Learn Hindi:

You might land your first film, thanks to your looks but for a long innings, you need to learn Hindi.

You can seek some inspiration from Katrina, who took Urdu classes to speak chaste Hindi as a

politician in Raajneeti. The actress has come a long way from her earlier films where her voice would

be dubbed. Jacqueline's voice was dubbed in Aladin, but she dubbed her own lines in Jaane Kahaan Se

Aayi Hai. Now, she is learning Hindi for her next film.

Similarly, Sarah might not have signed any more films after Raajneeti, but she is keen on making it big

in Bollywood. So she is not only learning Hindi since the last six months but is also educating herself

about Hindi films. Born in India to French parents, Kalki Koechlin, who was seen as Chanda in Dev. D,

knows Tamil fluently but is not well-versed in Hindi. Now, she is learning the national language but

admits that she still has a long way to go. “Meri Hindi kaafi sudhar gayi hain, par abhi bhi bahut

seekhna baaqi hain,” she says.

Find a mentor:

The right mentor will not only groom you but also help with contacts in Bollywood and land you good

offers. Though Katrina was introduced in Boom by Kaizad Gustad, she received a lot of support from

Salman Khan, landing roles in films like Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya and Partner, produced under his

brother Sohail Khan's banner. He is also reported to have advised her on her choice of films and roles.

Kaif has, in interviews, often expressed gratitude for his support and also mentioned director Vipul

Shah's faith in her for Namastey London and Singh Is Kingg as crucial to her performances and career.

Director Anurag Kashyap has mentored Kalki even after Dev. D, her debut film. Till date he helps her

increase her knowledge about Bollywood. She says, “Anurag doesn't influence my work. But there are

many people in the industry whom I don't know, and I ask him about them.”

Have no hang-ups:

You will have an advantage over your Indian contemporaries if you are open to doing diverse roles.

According to scriptwriter-turned-filmmaker, Milap Zaveri, foreign actresses are keen to try out

something different. “Since they come from abroad, they are open to various suggestions and are keen

on doing diverse roles. These actors are not familiar with Hindi, so they work harder on their

performances. They have a killer instinct to excel and make a mark,” he explains.

Pria says that foreign starlets have no inhibitions about shedding their clothes and are quite comfortable

in their skin. “While Indians are usually apprehensive about being seen in a bikini, foreigners are

confident. Barbara revealed a lot in Kites but didn't look cheap. On the contrary, she looked confident

and chic.”

Do some modelling assignments:

What do Katrina, Bruna and Mariah have in common? All of them were models before getting a break

in Bollywood. Modelling will not only give you a chance to get accustomed with camera angles, but

also help you understand how the industry works and help make some quick money. It will also help

you get noticed by filmmakers. It's a known fact that Kaizad roped in Katrina for Boom after seeing her

modelling work. Yana Gupta was the face of popular brands like Lakme and Kingfisher Airlines

following which she was offered “item” numbers in Dum and Rakht.

Be hardworking and disciplined:

It sounds cliched, but hard work is the key to success. You have to be dedicated and disciplined.

Katrina is known for her diligence to get every scene right. Jha says, “She is extremely hardworking

and sincere. She always does her homework.” It might be recalled that while shooting for Raajneeti, the

actress was told to repeat co-star’s Nana Patekar’s dialogues for which she was unprepared. She

requested Jha to give her a day’s notice and forfeit her payment before the issue was amicably resolved.

As far as Bollywood is concerned, the girls will do well to remember that it is not getting in the race

that matters, but staying in the run that will ultimately benefit their careers.

Liam Liu is auditioning for a role in a tooth-paste advertisement. He is rejected after some initial

questions by the screeners because he is not considered " [East] Asian" enough. This begins our

glimpse into the casting decision of Hollywood producers, who Liam believes heavily stereotype East

Asian men to the point where it is difficult for them to land normal roles. Liam then takes a city bus

home from the audition since his car is towed away, and there, he meets Adelaide Bourbon (Hayden

Panettiere), a young, beautiful, high school student. During the ride home, Liam discovers that

Adelaide has been sketching a picture of him. The two begin to converse and Adelaide sings Liam a

song, whereupon they become quick friends. Liam feels guilt for becoming friends with such a young

girl and Adelaide later asks Liam to go to the prom with her. He declines, and this serves as the basis

During a scene early in the movie, Liam expresses his frustration in the stereotyping of East Asian men

in Hollywood, since he himself is a struggling actor. Joe reminds Liam that it was Liam's decision to

drop out of Columbia University to pursue a career in acting. In the "bar scene," as it is known, Joe

challenges Liam to ask a Caucasian woman at the bar out. Liam rails against Joe and the woman at the

bar, Georgia (Kathleen Lancaster), because she supposedly represents the superficiality and

from Adelaide at his hotel, Liam goes to meet the buyers of his house. After seeing the view of

Shanghai from the house, and being told that the house would sell for five hundred thousand yuan and

not five hundred thousand U.S. dollars,[3] Liam chooses not to sell the house. While at a bar, he meets

Micki Yang (Kelly Hu). Micki is initially resistant to the charms of Liam, but the two slowly tour

Shanghai doing things Liam has never done. Micki is still somewhat skeptical about Liam, since Liam

After spending the night together, Liam decides to move into his grand-mother's house in Shanghai.

Liam returns to L.A. and tells his friends of his plan. After a tearful goodbye with Adelaide, he returns

to Shanghai and tries to live as a Chinese person. Unfortunately, Liam is picked up by Micki's gangster

boy-friend, of whom Liam was not aware, after he finds out about Liam and Micki's relationship.

Pointing out Liam's up-bringing in the U.S., Micki's boy-friend dumps Liam from a limosine in the

pouring rain in downtown Shanghai. Liam is reminded of his semiforeign status as he wanders the

streets unable to communicate with the people or find his way home. Liam later asks Micki about her

boyfriend, and she responds that she is only with him because her family is destitute - her mother raised

her and her numerous young siblings alone, and it would greatly aid her family to have access to such

money. She also mentioned that Liam can not possibly understand the options one has when one is

living a life of abject poverty.

After Micki tells Liam to go back to Los Angeles, he again almost sells the house to the elderly couple,

but has another change of heart and decides to leave the house to Micki, who will be able to use the

house to abide in with her family and thus will not be forced to remain with her boyfriend because of

financial issues. He returns to the U.S. to reconcile with Adelaide, but she rebukes him as she is leaving

for France to attend art school. With a mixed-message good-bye, she goes to France and Liam

reconciles with his father, getting a job at Starbuck's and successfully auditioning for an advertisement

for a genital herpes treatment. Adelaide later returns to the U.S. and Liam is prepared to meet her upon

her arrival to the air-port from France. However, as he prepares to walk up to give her some flowers, he

sees Adelaide kissing a Caucasian man as they part. Liam walks out of the air-port and disposes of the

flowers in frustration of himself. As he prepares to leave, however, Adelaide accosts him. When he asks

about the man in the airport, she informs Liam that the man was her instructor and that "he's as gay as a

pineapple." They agree to restart their relationship on a more solid footing (if for no other reason

Panaji, Nov 22 (IANS) And you blamed Bollywood for consistently seeking 'inspiration' from

Hollywood −− a Polish film now has a Bollywood−like number and filmmaker Jakub Tarkowski is

unabashed in his debt to the Mumbai−based film industry for similar inspiration.

Tarkowski, one of the three directors of the Polish film "George The Hedgehog" was in Goa to attend

the 43rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI). He also said that he was overwhelmed by the host

city and the choice of films on offer at the event.

"In our movie, we made a musical sequence that was inspired by Bollywood," Tarkowski told IANS,

while speaking about his film, which is based on comic book strips. Its plot involves two neo Nazis and

a scientist who club their talents together.

The musical sequence is complete with the 'thumkas' and 'jhatkas' found in Bollywood films.

Tomasz Lesniak, one of the three co−directors of the film, who is also in Goa, drew a parallel in the

element of exaggeration in animation films and Bollywood cinema. As animation specialists, that was

one of the reasons why they shared an affinity with Hindi cinema.

"We wanted to exaggerate some things in our movie in a similar way. Maybe that is why we can relate

to Bollywood movies," Tomasz, also known as Tom said.

What else tickles Tom's 'Bollywood bone', is the far−fetched action sequences, where actors often fly,

swing, gyrate, kick and leap unrealistically in the action sequences, and often almost immediately break

into a song and dance sequence.

"I like the exaggeration. Any action scene is 10 times more intense than other movies. Every actor is

singing in the movie in the song. It is very exotic for me. I like it," Tom said, adding that although he

had watched several films, he did not recall names.

In fact, the director duo said that like in Bollywood films, in animation too exaggeration rules the roost,

where a character's expressions have to be doubled or tripled.

"There is a rule in comic and animation that if you want to present an emotion, you have to make it

double to be understood. So the similar thing happens in Bollywood, but with actors," he said.

Commenting on Goa and the host city Panaji, Tarkowski said: "We are looking forward to watch

Sixteen is a story about lost innocence and teenage heartache in urban India In the times of the Internet,

Page-3 in newspapers and more than 300 TV channels, innocence of the youth is the first victim of

overexposure.

Anu is a carefree and ambitious girl who wants to be a model. Nidhi is an innocent virgin and is usually

taunted by her peers for being so. Tanisha is mature for her age and likes handsome guys with a good

sense of humour and intelligence. She lives with her aunt since her parents passed away in an accident.

Ashwin belongs to a middle-class family with a strict father who wants him to be an IAS Officer.

Nidhi is going out with Kartik. Kartik wants to take things further but Nidhi wants to wait for the 'right

time and the right place'. Tanisha and Ashwin are best friends, but Ashwin has a crush on Tanisha,

while she sees him only as a friend. Anu changes her boyfriends all the time. A handsome and

intelligent writer- Vikram Kapoor- comes to live as a tenant at Tanisha's place, and he immediately

develops feelings for her due to events in his past.

One day, Ashwin confesses his feelings to Tanisha. She politely denies him, and he is devastated, and

nearly commits suicide. On the same day, Ashwin's father finds porn on his computer and beats him up.

Ashwin retaliates, hits his father with one of his achievement trophies, and his father dies. His mother

falsely confesses that she did it and takes the blame. Ashwin runs away from his house, and the next

day, is confronted by a gang of young criminals, who induct him into their gang.

To make things more complicated, even Tanisha's aunt develops feelings for Vikram and reveals them

to him, Anu comes to know that her parents are in an open marriage and is devastated, and after a few

days, Nidhi suspects that she is pregnant. Anu goes to buy a pregnancy test kit for her and bumps into

her ex-boyfriend, who asks her why she dumped him. Anu humiliates him badly and leaves.

Nidhi finds out that she is now pregnant with Kartik's baby. They decide on abortion, but due to some

complications, Nidhi is shifted to another hospital. She has to stay there for two days. Nidhi lies to her

mother about where she is.

Meanwhile, Anu comes to know that her ex-boyfriend has leaked an MMS depicting her in a

compromising position. She is rusticated from her school for that. Tanisha finds out that Vikram is

leaving for London soon. A female rival of Nidhi, Anu and Tanisha tells Nidhi's mother why she

actually is in hospital. Her parents rush to the hospital and comfort her.

Ashwin's gang decides to rob a house who's only current occupant is an old man. While executing their

plan, Ashwin is confronted, and is about to kill the old man when he says that his son is an IAS Officer.

Ashwin breaks down and bursts into tears. Anu is about to commit suicide when her brother calls her

and tells her that he is arriving next weekend. On hearing this, she quits her suicide attempt. Tanisha,

sad that Vikram is about to leave the next day, goes and sleeps in his room with him.

One year later, Nidhi is enrolled in an all-girls school. Anu has applied for the Miss India contest and

her parents are supportive of her, and she loves them. Vikram has written a novel named 'Sixteen'

which is nominated for the Booker Prize finals. Anu,Tanisha and Nidhi decided to go and meet Ashwin

in the juvenile correction home he was kept in. Tanisha kisses Ashwin on the cheek, indicating that she

has started liking him.

from India, only to find himself
