THE PROBLEMThere are too many recyclable materials that are going to waste. Our goal, as a group, is to make shoes that are totally made out of recyclable and reusable materials to make shoes just as efficient as the current ones.

SPECIFICATIONS• Location: ASIA

• We’re aiming to make shoes that attract people of all ages to show that recycling can come to good, COOL results. Many people nowadays don’t recycle because they just don’t care and think that nothing good comes out of it.

SOLUTIONS/MATERIALS USED

• Our solutions include using the cloth from purses for the outer covering of the shoe, using a car mat for the bottom of the shoe so it’s nice and firm, using the soles from old, worn out gym shoes, using an elastic strap cut out from a bathing suit for the back of the shoe, using cloth from a pillow for the lining of the shoe, and sewing all the cloth together using a sewing kit. Also, we used the handle of the purse for the lining of the shoe so it looks more clean.

PROCEDURE1) Cut out the soles from old shoes.

2) Cut cloth from a purse.

3) Cut cloth from a pillow.

4) Trace foot on car mat and cut it out for bottom of shoe. (Do this for each foot.)

5) Sewed pillow cover onto one sole.

6) Once done sewing, stitch the top layer from the cloth of the purse to shape your foot.

7) When done, stitch car mat cut out to the bottom of the sole.

8) Cut the elastic strap from a swimsuit for the strap for the shoe. Sew the strap in respect with the heel of the foot.

9) Add accessories, such as a button. (optional.)

PROJECT DESIGN BRIEF• Client Company: HVBAO

• Target Consumer: Appeal mainly to everyone in the United States to teach them of the importance of recycling.

• Designers: Katherine Wong, Katie Iuorio, Sneha Ramprasad

• Problem Statement: How to make shoes using recyclable and reused products so that they can be environmentally friendly.

• Design Statement: Using materials such as cloth, door mats to make the bottom of the shoe, and more recyclable materials. It will be based on the model of your typical everyday shoe.

• Constraints: Nothing made of non-recyclable products; nothing that specifically needs to be made. Things we can find easily and are readily available to us.

ELIMINATED IDEASWe were initially going to use parts of a tire to make the bottom of the shoes and use shoelaces, but we found using a tire time consuming and difficult, so we replaced the tire with a car mat. It proved to be just as effective. Instead of using shoelaces, we ended up using the straps of a bathing suit for the back part of our shoe. We also focused on using jeans as our material, but we later discarded it discovering the cloth from the purse was just as strong. Our idea was focused on making a gym shoe, but our final product resulted in something that was entirely different.

TEST RUNSWe tested how effective our shoe was by running, kicking, and bending it numerous times. The shoe proved to be strong and was very durable.
