SHRI VISHNU ENGINEERING COLLEGE FOR WOMEN BHIMAVARAM DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING Date: 23-01-2016 Place: Settipeta REPORT ON INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO MINI HYDEL STATION We take this opportunity to thank the management for providing such a wonderful opportunity to explore the students practical knowledge by taking to an industrial tour to Mini hydro power plant, Settipeta, Nidadavole . DESCRIPTION: Settipeta Mini Hydro station producing the capacity of 1000 KW was constructed to utilize water releases through Eluru main canal near Settipeta, West Godavari district. This is a multipurpose power plant in which water from the river is fed to turbine and the electricity generated. After the electricity is generated the water is used for agriculture and irrigation purposes. This power plant is proposed to generate power throughout the year. We,52 students of II EEE started at 8:30 am in one bus from vishnupur Bhimavaram. We reached settipeta by 10:30. We were divided into two groups and and facilitated by our professors. CONSTRUCTION OF HYDRO POWER PLANT: MAIN PARTS OF HYDRO POWER PLANT: 1. Area 2. Pen stock 3. Storage Tank 4. Turbines and Generators 5. Switchgear and protection. For construction of mini hydro power plant first we choose the area where the water is sufficient to reserve and no any crisis of water and suitable to build a dam, then we construct the dam. But in this power plant no reservoir and dam is present, hence there is no head i.e., (head (H) =0) . As area increases velocity decreases ( (A1*V1=A2*V2)). This phenomenon is used here, and then the water is fed to the turbine.

SIPHON TUBE:

It allows liquid to flow from the higher level to the lower level.

Siphon works because of gravity pull and the push of atmospheric pressure.

Higher air pressure at one end of the tube pushes liquid to a lower elevation.

A vacuum is devoid of any atmospheric pressure, siphon does not work in vaccum.

TURBINES:

Semi-vertical Kaplan turbine with four blades is used.

Shaft of the turbine is vertical.

The turbine revolves horizontally.

GEAR BOX:

As turbine rotates speed of the turbine will increase with the help of gearbox. GEAR OIL: As the turbine rotates continuously there will be damage in the turbine

blades. So gear oil is used to cool the turbine blades.

RADIATOR:

When the blades are heated up, this heat is absorbed by the radiators.

To convey heat from the reactor core to the steam turbines.

SERVO MOTOR: Servo motor is preferred from the ordinary

electrical motor because the efficiency of motor is very high and also the blades of the turbine will open with the help of this motor.

This motor is also used for giving feed back when the changes occur in speed .

GENERATOR:

It is used for converting mechanical energy into electrical energy.

From this generator electricity is generated and fed to the step up transformer.

After stepping up the voltage, the generated power is sent to the substation and it is distributed.
