CHALLENGE Shrink sleeves can be custom printed with full-color photographic images that wrap 360 degrees around the entire container. Without the space limitations of conventional labels, shrink sleeve labels allow for greater creativity in presenting brand identity, specialty promotions, cost-effective, used on a variety of container shapes, and product information. Some shrink sleeve labels are printed on environmentally friendly sustainable films. Some of the defects that occur include label skew, upside down label, incorrect positioning, smiley or frowny, holes/tears, and underfold/overfold.
INTELLECT Label Inspection 720-Degree Configurable Container Inspection Module provides overlapping coverage of a complete 360-degree view of a container. Shrink sleeve labels can be transparent to opaque and can change frequently. The solution uses multiple cameras and LED lights to conduct accurate label inspection at speeds up to 1200 CPM. The system is configured to reject containers based on provided specification.

Inspecting shrink sleeves can be a challenge due to the contrast between the container contents and the label. The INTELLECT Label application can detect the slightest shrink sleeve defect and eject the container from the manufacturer’s production line. After uploading the various label SKU’s, the system is set up for shrink label defect inspection. Successful inspection of shrink sleeve labels is predicated on creating the highest possible contrast between the label and the container contents. • When the shrink label is white or lightly colored, front lighting only is used to illuminate the label, to make the
contents appear darker than the label.• When the label is dark, front lighting is used to illuminate the label and backlighting to illuminate the container
contents. The backlight will both accentuate the color of the container contents and will improve the contrast with the label.
• Many inspections can be configured and performed with the shrink sleeve application.
