2018 School Charter

A school’s charter sets the direction for the school and identifies the priorities the board

expects the principal to be leading.

The Education Act requires every school's board of trustees to:

prepare and maintain a charter

send a reviewed and updated charter to the Ministry of Education every year.

Our charter is the key-planning document for our school. It includes strategic aims and

annual plans which:

reflect the goals and aspirations of our community has for our school and our students

for the next 3 years

outlines how our school is implementing the government's priorities as set out in the

National Education Guidelines and the National Administration Guidelines

identify the key areas our board will focus on, both in the longer term and the coming

year, to improve the progress and achievement of all of our students.

Our draft school charter is on the website for community consultation. If you have any

comment on the school charter please contact me.

ANZAC Day

Thank you to everyone who came along last

Wednesday to the ANZAC Day Parade at Hibiscus

Coast Community RSA. Silverdale School was well

represented and it was great to see so many children

and parents remembering those who served, those

who are still serving and honouring our veterans.

Anzac Day

By Grace-Maia Taylor, Room 14

On the Wednesday 25 April, Silverdale School

gathered at Hibiscus Coast Community RSA to

honour the soldiers that went to World War 1 and

World War 2 and other wars.

We had amazing turnout of students from Silverdale

School. The 11:00 am service included a walking

parade which our students took part in with respect.

There were also a lot of clubs and schools, veterans

and onlookers. Our wreath was laid by Riley and

myself. Overall it was really nice to celebrate Anzac

day with everybody.

Playgrounds

Over the next few weeks we will be replacing the bark in the playgrounds with specialised

matting during this time the playgrounds will be closed, we ask that if you use the

playgrounds after school hours that you stay off the playgrounds when this work is being

completed, thanks.

New Playground

Starting either June or July we will be building a new playground for our children. I will keep

you up to date as I receive more information. A big thank you to all our parents/families

and previous parents/families for their fantastic fundraising efforts, without these efforts we

wouldn’t be getting a new playground.

Netball

Thank you to all the parents who have put their hand up to help out with our netball teams.

Without your involvement we would not be able to give our children the opportunities that

they get.

City Mission Mufti Day – This Friday 4 May

The City Mission desperately needs our help! In the past 3 months the Mission has provided

3,253 emergency food parcels to desperate families and individuals. These food parcels

have contained 49,417 cans of food and as a result their stock is nearly completely used

up. On Friday we will have a mufti day with the cost being a can of food. While anything is

appreciated their wish list contains the following: canned spaghetti, canned tomatoes,

canned vegetables, canned fruit and canned soup.

Please come to school on Friday in mufti (non uniform clothing) with a canned item and

help us support those in need.

How To Help Your Child at School

As a parent, there are many things you can do at home to help your child have a good

school year. These include making sure your child gets enough sleep, getting them to

school on time, and reading at home every day. Below are some other tips.

A healthy diet and exercise

Children who eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise can concentrate better during

the school day. It is important that your child eats a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and

vegetables, and has opportunities to exercise every day through a sports team, fun activity,

or playtime outside.

Sleep

Getting enough sleep will help your child get up on time, feel good, and be ready for a full

day of learning. Children need different amounts of sleep at different ages.

5-6 Years Old: 10 - 12 hours per day

7-12 Years Old: 10 - 11 hours per day

12-13 Years Old: 9 - 10 hours per day

Getting to school, every day and on time

It will be easier for your child to complete daily learning, home learning, if they get to school

on time every day. Limit the time your child misses for family trips and activities. Contact the

school immediately if your child is absent.

Page 6: SILVER PATHWAY - SILVERDALE SCHOOL · Longmore Ln, Silverdale North, PO Box 02 May 2018 Newsletter 11 Term 02 Hello, Tēnā koutou katoa, 你好, Nǐ hǎo Welcome Welcome back everyone

Home learning

Help your child set a regular time and place for home learning. Choose a time that works

well for your family's schedule. Find a place that is quiet and has good lighting. Make sure

your child has supplies such as pens, pencils, paper etc. Ask your child to show you their

finished home learning each night so that you can see what they are learning and confirm

that they are completing all their home learning.

Limit television, videogame, and computer time

Limit the time your child spends watching TV, playing video games, and using the

computer. When possible, do these activities together, and look for educational programs

and games. Help your child understand that they should never give out personal

information on the computer or talk to strangers online.

Talking about school together

Ask your child to tell you about the school day. Ask them what they have learnt, and how

they felt during the day. Listen carefully to their answers, and help them think of ways to

solve any problems that they might be having in their schoolwork or in the classroom.

Reading

Set aside time to read with your child each day. You can make reading a part of daily

routines by reading stories at bedtime and keeping lots of books and magazines in the

house.

Learning at home

Help your child learn at home by sharing activities together, singing, talking, and telling

stories. Visit educational places such as museums, the zoo, the park, or a historical

monument. Find out what your child's interests are, and look for activities and books that

are connected to that interest.

The 40 Hour Famine this year is over the weekend of 8-10 June. We have always been one

of the top schools in New Zealand to raise the

most money for World Vision and help the

children of South Sudan to build child friendly

spaces and provide them with clear water and

food. Every year, we always try to raise more!

The famine is available for years 5, 6 & 8 to take

part in and fundraise to help the children of

South Sudan who need our help. It does count

as a PEAKS Challenge. If your child has come

home and indicated they would like to take

part in the 40 Hour Famine, please make sure

you give your permission through kindo. They

will then receive a booklet to start their

fundraising. Please note that permission cut off for the famine is Friday 25 May at 10am.

Sponsorship money will need to be returned to Miss Joyce in Room 31 by Friday 29 June. If

Playball will be happening again at the school on Thursday at 3pm

Playball is a sport and movement programme for children between the ages of two and

nine. All of the programs are taught in a fun-filled, energetic positive, environment and for

the last 25 years. children from all over the world have loved it! At face level, Playball© is a

program which seems to have, as its main objectives: improving basic movement

development skills and refining sport skills and technique. The success of this seemingly

"sport programme" is in actual fact that it is not only that! it has been developed,

improved and re-designed over the past 25 years resulting in a coaching system that is

educational in every aspect. Playball programs are age specific, with each of our

programs taking into account the difference in the cognitive, emotional, social and

motor development of the children in each age group.
