“DOCKS IN” JUNE 1st

From Paul Phelps

ALL HANDS NEEDED! Our “docks in” work party is scheduled for Saturday June 1st, at 9 am. I would like to have everyone there by 8:45am for a safety and planning briefing before we start. Please let me (Paul Phelps) know your availability to help. Our rain date will be Sunday, June 2nd.

We will need teams for the boats, the docks and the shore. (Please be aware that the Sea Scouts will not be available to help us this year.) If you are working on the boat or the docks, please bring unmarked life jackets for the move. Please let me know if your boat would be available to help move the dock. The Penn Yan will be one of the boats for the move.

(Editor’s Note: This is for the floating dock is that next to our building. It is very important that we get repairs made and put in

place because this is where we keep some of our facilities docked through the season. Many patrols start from here.

Why Join the USCG Auxiliary?

Jennifer Watson, FSO-PA

I remember being surprised when people asked me that question! My personal favorite was “What made you do that?” The question always jarred me because joining the USCG Auxiliary seemed like the natural thing to do. Still, the question always came, and I knew it was a question to explore when it was the second question I asked of several members whom I met at the March 2019 D-Train! The first was “What Auxiliary are you from?” The fellowship at District 9E D-Train set the tone for learning. Members bustled about checking off required training as we mutually prepared for the 2019 boating season. D-Train is a place to get a sense of the scale and reach of the USCG Auxiliary. Still working on Crew qualifications, and public affairs requirements, I was completely humbled by our comrades on the Great Lakes, knowing full well the many hazards that await a patrol.

Marty Laufer FC Flotilla 3-1, Youngstown, Surprised and delighted to accept 2018 District Flotilla of the Year 9th Eastern Region From Massena, NY to Cleveland, OH. The geographic area that District 9E serves, is as diverse as its membership. Encompassing areas of Ohio, Pennsylvania to parts of New York, these bodies of water are complex and challenging. The cold-water hazard is as palpable as the rugged shores of the

Sea Scouts helping with “Docks In” 2018

Great Lakes, depth of the Finger Lakes, and current of the many rivers and streams. Each area requires a high level of specialization to head off tragedy and carry out safe operations. USCG Member training is structured to prepare members for managing both operational challenges, and how to educate the public on safety around the water.

Tom Every FSO-AUXPAD, Flotilla 2 2, Ithaca sharing critical cold water safety information at Fishing Day, Ithaca, NY.

Kevin Walsh SO-PB, and Dave Cornelius FSO-FN, sharing safety information at Fishing Day, Ithaca NY. Training is all hinged on each individual’s unique interests and skills. The future of the Auxiliary is with our youth. The Auxiliary provides an ideal format for young students as they contemplate their role in society. I truly hope to reach more young people to share information on the possibilities available to them through the USCG Auxiliary.

Flotilla 2 2, Ithaca Fellowship Picnic, 8, May 2019.

But why join?

Many members join as a continuation of enlisted service. Effortlessly transferring the safety and security training they developed to the civilian side. Others like myself, value the structured, life-saving skills training, and the opportunity to possibly teach others how to prevent, if just one, tragedy. For me, the members of Flotilla 2 2, Ithaca proved to be endlessly helpful. I found myself drawn in alongside of boaters at local safety events. As a new member I’m excited and grateful for the variety of specialties and training available. As we begin this 2019 boating season, I wish us all an uneventful summer of fellowship and growth. Boat safe, Jennifer Watson FSO-PA

Operations

Boat Crew Kim Walsh, FSO OP/PE

Every year presents new opportunities and challenges when it comes to operations. In order to execute missions, we need qualified personnel, working Facilities and reasonable weather. Too often we think we have a great plan and then have to cancel or scale back due to a

problem with one or more of these components. The best way to ensure success is to have sufficient quantities of approved Facilities, along with certified Coxswains and crewmembers—the two factors that are slightly more under our control than the weather!

For several years, Tom Every, Walt Robinson and Don Campbell have carried the load as our only qualified Coxswains. Over the past 3-4 years, we’ve steadily gained

more crewmembers than we’ve lost, so we currently have 5 Coxswains plus 14 crewmembers. These numbers, along with additional Facilities, greatly increases our flexibility to execute Training missions, routine and special safety patrols and search and rescue missions. We’ve had the same 5 Facilities for the past 2 years, which range from Tom Every’s 17’ Arima Sea Ranger with an outboard motor, to Don Campbell’s 33’ Sea Ray with twin inboards. The variety of Facilities is useful to introduce crewmembers to different boat handling characteristics and for our variety of missions.

That will expand this year, with one additional Facility already approved, Paul Phelps’s 14’ jon boat, and at least two more being prepared. Pamela Wik-Grimm’s 35’ Alberg sailboat will give us a great opportunity to expand our seamanship skills. These two non-traditional Facilities will provide additional capability for training plus Paul’s boat is easily trailerable, should the need arise. To prepare us for adding a sailboat as a Facility, Pamela Wik-Grimm conducted the Sailing Skills and Seamanship course in March. Many of our power-boating members participated, which gave them a greater understanding of the major differences between power and sail boats. John Frieman has also been leading the AUXSEA course and all current crewmembers and trainees have been tasked to complete the new Introduction to Risk Management training and an Operational Workshop. You know boating season must be just around the corner with so much shoreside training on-going! The experience and skills we develop as crewmembers, enhance our credibility with the public when completing Vessel Safety Checks and teaching our About Boating Safely course. Safety patrols are a great time of training, practice, camaraderie and service to our community and a very visible reminder to recreational boaters that we are indeed alive and well. If you’ve got the time and interest, please join us! You can also contribute in many other ways, including completing the Communications training to monitor our Base radio, another component of operations.

My Experience Becoming a Boat Crew Member

By Mark Erway, FSO-PB

After joining the Auxiliary, one-on-one meetings with then Commander Gene Little and Human Resources officer Bo Stevens, helped develop the goals/career path for the

way forward. I got a real sense that the Ithaca Flotilla was a very active group of people dedicated to public service on Cayuga Lake, which translated to doing something called “patrols”. But one had to qualify to become a crew member in order to participate in patrols. It seemed that this was the heart of being an Auxiliarist, out on the water, ready to help people in distress, to provide perimeter safety for swimmers, or even be part of an SAR (search and rescue) effort. There would be a time commitment involved for reading, study, practice and qualifying patrols. This was going to be a challenge but well worth it. Members Walt Robinson, Kim Walsh, John Frieman, Tom Every and Don Campbell, became mentors and friends and coached me through the different sections of the qualifying requirements, from marlinspike to boat handling, from first aid to radio ops. At first it seemed to be overwhelming, but their coaching approach made it all possible AND enjoyable. It also required participating in patrols, actual hands-on training, where the coxswain and the other qualified boat crew members continued to model and educate the “Auxiliary” way of doing things. Of the many memorable events during the qualification, three stand out. The first was pre-plotting a course from the marina at Myer’s Point on Cayuga Lake to our destination in Seneca Falls on the Erie Canal. Coxswain Don Campbell was my mentor for this exercise. Along with other trainees and qualified boat crew we would spend part of a day on his 33’ Sea Ray making the trip. I quickly learned that Don was a seasoned Coxswain and deviations from the course that I plotted for our trip proved to be far more efficient. As an added bonus

we transited the canal locks to Seneca Falls, teaching us to “lock through”. The second memorable event was jumping into the lake at Myer’s Point while wearing an Extra-large float suit. A south wind of about 10-12 miles an hour created some nice little Cayuga Lake whitecaps with enough chop to make it challenging and VERY educational. (I found that I don’t like eating seaweed). Thankfully the lake water was comfortably warm. The third memorable event was our final examination. It started on a rainy morning with an oral question-and-answer test given by John Steinbarge, our Qualification Examiner from Division Two, who also directed and evaluated us

for our on-the-water performance portion. More pressure was felt with the presence of our Sector OTO, Chris Henderson, who was keeping an eye on all the proceedings. Four of us made it through the final exam and were pronounced qualified by the end of the day!

For me, at age 69, it was a real accomplishment and confidence builder. But the best part was getting to know people like John Steinbarge and Chris Henderson, as well as our mentors, our coxswains, the other qualified crew members and the rest of the

qualifying crew members. Yes, it took quite a bit of effort, but it was definitely worth it. I am eagerly looking forward to our 2019 patrols. If we can do it, you can do it, too! Hope to see you on patrol soon.

Sea Scout Ship 25

SEA SCOUT SHIP 25 MAY 2019 By Rachel Pflueger, Yeoman, Ship 25

Members of Ship 25, Ithaca, NY enjoy views of New York City and the Statue of Liberty from aboard the Sea Dart II (above and

right); and in Canada (below).

Cruising on New York Harbor April 26, we had a group cruise from Linden, NJ to SUNY Maritime aboard Sea Scout Ship 228's vessel the Sea Dart II. Our route took us past the statue of Liberty and up the East River to SUNY Maritime. Saturday they took classes on topics including safety at sea, sextant use, engine repair, and electricity among other things. Many got to try the boating simulator and take a tour of campus before heading back to the boat for a late evening cruise back to New Jersey

A trip north to Canada May 3-5 another group of us traveled north into Canada for a Scouts Canada camporee at Camp Opemikon. Members of Ship 25 won the canoe competition, enjoyed patch trading, shooting Archery, climbing on the high ropes course, and especially the side trip to Westport for supplies and a visit to the Rock Shop before the evening's campfire festivities and a dj dance at the teepee.

Welcome: Ship 25 held an Open House in April gaining six new members. Others have come to join since giving a real boost to our membership numbers.

Contact: Sea Scout Ship 25 meets at 6:30pm most Friday nights at the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Ithaca, NY. In the summer season, we look to do more sailing than meetings, weather permitting. For more information and a copy of Ship 25’s meeting and activity calendar, please visit www.ithacaseascouts.org or contact Committee Chairman Jim Graney at 607-327-1226.

MakingWaves - Special Water Week Edition

Water Week 2019: Restoring and Protecting NY’s Waters with State Funding

Although Water Week 2019 is coming to a close, celebrate water every day, and be a steward of New York’s waters all year long!

Today’s Topic: Stewardship of NY’s Waters Did you know?

• New York State has more than 87,000 miles of rivers and streams, nearly 7,900 lakes and ponds, nearly 600 miles of Great Lakes coastline, over 1,530 square miles of estuaries, 120 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline, as well as underground aquifers to protect and conserve.

• Billions of dollars have been spent over the past 30 years on water quality improvement projects. This has led to significant water quality achievements, but more work remains to be done. We encourage communities to review the grants available through the 2019 Consolidated Funding Application to help restore or protect local waters.

• There are many ways individuals can make a difference, no funding needed. Visit the links below for ideas to keep New York’s waters clean.
