Singapore Maths Tour
Three senior teachers from both Tollgate and Cleves took part in
a ‘Maths No Problem’ Mathematics study tour last week to
Singapore. They had the opportunity to join other senior leaders
across various Newham schools to work alongside one of the
current leading Maths specialists in the world, Dr Yeap Ban Har.
The teachers were able to observe, experience and partake in
workshops from one of the leading countries for Mathematics
outcomes and share good practice across the UK and Singapore.
100 Days to Rio On Wednesday 27th April fourteen lucky children from year 5
were chosen to attend the 100 Days to Rio Event at the Queen
Elizabeth Olympic Park. The children got to try five different

thoroughly enjoyed the event.
Year 2 trip to the London Transport
Museum 2B visited the London Transport Museum in
Convent Garden on Tuesday. Children had
the opportunity to experience what it would
be like to use public transport in the past and compare these
modes of transport with the present day. There were lots of
different modes of transport on show
such as trams, steam engines and
buses. The children were also hunting
to collect stamps that were hidden in
secret locations all over the museum.

School Council Interview with a
Teacher This week the school council
interviewed our Year 5 teacher Mr
Sumpter.
Have you always wanted to be a
teacher?
I wasn't totally sure what I wanted to be, but I knew that
I wanted to do a job that involved helping people or
changing their lives for the better.
What do you enjoy doing outside of school?
I like to go out on my motorbike, going for a ride is always
a great way to clear away the stress of a day!
What is your pet hate?
Rudeness and refusal to accept the blame for something
you've done.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I'm a bit of a film nerd. I love reading in-depth analyses of
film production.
What type of music do you like listening to?
It entirely depends on my mood, my taste has become far
more diverse the older I've become. I still can't resist
going to a small gig every now and again though.
Which actor would you like to play you in a film of
your life?
I suppose it would be pretty cool if Tom Hardy picked up
the role, I think he's awesome.
If you could be any member of staff in the school for
a day who would you be and why?
None other than Mrs Hammond. I'd learn so many more
arty tricks and tips, she's a life-saver!
Playground Certificate
This week’s Playground
Certificate goes to Judah in 5LD
for his sportsmanship. Well done.
Mobile Phones If your child walks home alone and needs to bring their
phone into school, please can you make sure that all mobile
phones are brought into the main reception where they will
be locked away until the end of the day. This ensures your
child's phone is safe and prevents any phones from getting
lost.
Food Bank Thank you to all the parents and staff who
donated to the food bank. All the food
donated will help support our most
