About Smeg sinks

At Smeg we understand that kitchen appliances need to be aesthetically beautiful and functional in equal measure. The humble kitchen sink has gone from a functional space in which to wash dishes, to a food preparation area, a drying area, a place to remove food scraps (perhaps via a food waste disposer) and, ultimately, to the focal point of a designer kitchen.

Smeg’s range of sinks vary from a simple, yet beautifully made, single bowl with drainer sink, through to the fl agship of the range — a very sophisticated, double-bowl sink with elegant glass sliding chopping boards. A selection of sinks has been designed to specifi cally complement the iconic Smeg kitchen appliance ranges; for example, the LV range of sinks is shaped to perfectly correspond to the PGA range of cooktops, and the LD range will enhance the Marc Newson-designed range of ovens and cooktops. The design combination of Smeg Linear products with Smeg LQ sinks is superb.

Kitchen sinks are in most cases made of stainless steel, which is defi ned as a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5–11% chromium content by mass. Stainless steel does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as ordinary steel. Stainless steel is austenitic — metallic but non magnetic. Smeg sinks are made from high-quality AISI304 (iron free) brushed stainless steel with a satin fi nish, 1mm thick is used for Smeg LD, LV, LQV, LQR, LR, VQ and VST ranges. The standard ranges are made with 0.6–0.7mm thick stainless steel.

The majority of Smeg sinks are made of lightly-brushed satin stainless steel to achieve the same fi nish as Smeg cooktops, ovens, rangehoods and refrigeration.

There are three methods of mounting sinks — topmount, fl ushmount and undermount. Topmounting is the standard method of installation, ie the sink is placed into a cutout and has a low profi le.

For granite, marble, quartz resin and pure resin etc, fl ushmounting is often the preferred method as it achieves a completely fl at surface. The ‘hole’ must be perfectly cut to accommodate the exact dimensions of the sink with a small rebate to accommodate the fl ush fi tment of the visible trim. Undermounting is when the sink’s trim is perfectly concealed below the bench. It is important when installing undermount sinks that the manufacturer’s instructions are followed carefully, using silicon and the brackets provided. The sink should not be glued in place.

For both fl ush and undermounting, the sink should always be at hand for the qualifi ed and skilled fabricator/stonemason to install.

CLEANING

The premium-quality stainless which Smeg uses for its kitchen sinks is extremely durable. Over the course of its life, it will show signs of wear which may change its appearance but does not alter its integrity. Discolouration and marks which may appear on stainless steel are usually caused by water-borne deposits on its surface. Such stains often have a ‘rainbow effect’ and can be avoided by removing any wet objects (cloths etc) from the sink; it is helpful to dry the sink thoroughly after use.

Perforated rubber or plastic mats in the sink will cut down on scratching and marking by pans and tableware. Wash with a solution of dishwashing liquid detergent and water; or a solution of baking soda and water. Rinse and polish dry with paper towel or soft cloth. Never use scouring powders or steel wool as they will scratch stainless steel. You can brighten the sink by polishing with a cloth dipped in vinegar, or in ammonia, or dampen sink and a sponge, sprinkle a little baking soda on sponge and rub sink gently; rinse, then polish dry with a paper towel.

Smeg sinks, over time, actually improve with age. The day-to-day touching of plates, pots, utensils etc all add and improve the texture and appearance within its satin-fi nished surface.

NB: each LQR sink is prepunched with two holes in either end of the stainless steel bridge between the two sink bowls. Depending on your drainer side, one hole will be fi tted with the pop-up square knob to raise or lower strainer plug in the bowl; the other hole will be for the tap.
