DALI System

Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) is a communication protocol

for the control of lighting devices and is the result of an effort to

standardize digital interfaces for electronic ballasts, enabling designers

and manufacturers of lighting components to implement and create

complex lighting solutions in an easy and convenient way.

Unlike other technologies for building automation, DALI is specially

designed for lighting management. Due to this specialization, it reduces

integration and installation costs and operating costs (future changes).

DALI System

DALI has simple commissioning procedures that are automated to the

extent possible, and if necessary (through gateways) integrate with

other technologies (KNX, LON, BACNET, among others) in a building.

The DALI is a standard protocol, where we can have up to 64 field

devices per DALI controller, and the devices can be connected by an

unshielded 2-wire cable.

It is an easy-to-install technology that enables a fully digital connection

of luminaires and other similar devices in building automation

applications.

Each DALI controller can individually address up to 64 devices, which can be

divided into 16/32 groups and 16/32 lighting scenarios.

DALI System

The DALI electronic ballasts are connected in parallel and connected to each

other via a DALI controller.

DALI is a less expensive and more flexible system in terms of cable infrastructure

compared to 1-10V technology.

Unlike conventional analogue 1-10V technology, the power connects DALI devices

directly, so no external relay is required (see figure).

DALI System

Since the DALI is a digital communication system, the DALI controller (such as

the central control unit) can communicate with DALI devices (DALI ballasts)

directly, perform diagnostic functions and obtain feedback of device states.

As DALI is an international standard, it guarantees the interoperability of

different types of DALI electronic ballasts (different loads) from different

manufacturers.

DALI field devices

The DALI interface is described in the IEC 62386 standard.

The areas of the standard correspond in each case to a connectable type

of device:

• Part 201: Fluorescent lamps (device type 0)

• Part 202: Emergency lighting (type 1 device)

• Part 203: HID lamps (type 2 device) (HID = High Intensity Discharge)

• Part 204: Low Voltage Halogen Lamps (Type 3 Device)

• Part 205: Regulation of general purpose lamps (type 4 device)

• Part 206: Conversion of digital signals to DC voltage signals (type 5 device)

• Part 207: LED Modules (Type 6 Device)

• Part 208: Switching function (device type 7)

• Part 209: Colour control (device type 8)

DALI Controllers

For each DALI network a DALI controller

and 230 VAC power supply are required.

Typically, DALI ballasts require 230 VAC external power (the DALI

controller does not power the DALI ballasts).

Each controller can manage up to 64 addresses, which correspond in

practice to 64 DALI devices (ballasts).

Important Note: Each DALI system only allows one controller. Care

must be taken that whenever we have more than one DALI controller

in one installation, we do not inadvertently connect two controllers

to one system.

Topologies

Each line can assign a maximum of 64 individual addresses (64 devices or

electronic ballasts).

These addresses can be assigned completely independently to each of the

16/32 group addresses (group of lights).

In addition, 16/32 lighting values can be stored, which correspond to 16/32

different lighting scenarios.

Topologies in Star, Tree or Mixed can be used in the construction of DALI lines.

DALI topologies can be constructed in

principle using standard installation cable.

The DALI system voltage ranges from 9.5 to

22.4 VDC.

The devices are usually supplied with

power via 230 VAC, so that a standard 5-

core installation cable can be used both as

a data cable and for supplying power.

The polarity can be neglected for the DALI

control cores even though they are marked

DALI+ and DALI-;

No end-of-line resistors are required.

The length of the entire line depends on the selected cable diameter as

well as the type and number of connected slaves. The maximum cable

length must not exceed 300 m. In addition, the voltage drop over the

entire length of the line may not exceed 2 VDC.

Communication: short description

The transmission rate is 1200 Baud which, in combination with the low voltage

level of the DALI signals of maximum 22.4 VDC, ensures good electromagnetic

compatibility (EMC).

All devices in a DALI system must conform to the following European standards:

EN 55015, EN 61547, EN 61000-3-2, EN 63000-3-3.

The DALI protocol consists of 19 bits, thus allowing the individual addressability

of 64 lights, status feedback (set dimming value, lamp test) as well as a large

number of adjustable parameters such as fade time, fade rate etc.
