entrance antiphon cf. Psalm 25 (24):1–3

To you, I lift up my soul, O my God. In you, I have trusted; let me not be put to shame. Nor let my enemies exult over me; and let none who hope in you be put to shame.

First reading Isaiah 63:16b–17, 19b; 64:2–7 (2B)

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah

You, Lord, are our father, our redeemer you are named forever. Why do you let us wander, O Lord,

from your ways, and harden our hearts so that we fear

you not?Return for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your heritage.Oh, that you would rend the heavens

and come down, with the mountains quaking before you, while you wrought awesome deeds we

could not hope for, such as they had not heard of

from of old.No ear has ever heard, no eye

ever seen, any God but youdoing such deeds for those who wait

for him.

Would that you might meet us doing right, that we were mindful of you

in our ways!Behold, you are angry, and we are sinful;

all of us have become like unclean people,

all our good deeds are like polluted rags;

we have all withered like leaves, and our guilt carries us away like

the wind.There is none who calls upon your name, who rouses himself to cling to you;for you have hidden your face from us and have delivered us up to our guilt.Yet, O Lord, you are our father;

we are the clay and you the potter:we are all the work of your hands.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

second reading 1 Corinthians 1:3–9

A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians

Brothers and sisters: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus, that in him you were enriched in every way, with all discourse and all knowledge, as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you, so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will keep you firm to the end, irreproachable on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

each with his own work, and orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch. Watch, therefore; you do not know when the lord of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning. May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to all: ‘Watch!’”

blessing oF the advent Wreath

After the homily, Mass proceeds with the Prayer of the Faithful. The prayer of blessing takes the place of the concluding prayer of the Prayer of the Faithful. This blessing takes place only on the First Sunday of Advent. On the Second and succeeding Sundays of Advent, the candles are lighted either before Mass begins or immediately before the Collect; no additional rites or prayers are used.

Prayer of the faithful

Prayer of Blessing*With hands outstretched, the Priest says:

Lord God,your Church joyfully awaits the

coming of its Savior, who enlightens our heartsand dispels the darkness of ignorance

and sin.

Pour forth your blessings upon usas we light the candles of this wreath;may their light reflect the splendor

of Christ, who is Lord, for ever and ever.Amen.

OrLord our God,we praise you for your Son,

Jesus Christ:he is Emmanuel, the hope

of the peoples,he is the wisdom that teaches

and guides us,he is the Savior of every nation.

Lord God,let your blessing come upon usas we light the candles of this wreath.May the wreath and its lightbe a sign of Christ’s promise to bring

us salvation.May he come quickly and not delay.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.Amen.

The first candle is then lighted. Mass continues with the Liturgy of the Eucharist on page 11.

*The prayer of blessing of the Advent wreath is taken from the Book of Blessings, #1509–1540.

Palm Sunday of the PaSSion of the lord– march 25, 2018 –

THE COMMEMORATION OF THE LORD’S ENTRANCE INTO JERUSALEM

On this day, the Church celebrates Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem to accomplish the Paschal Mystery of his death and resurrection. The memorial of this event is included in every Mass, with the Procession or the Solemn Entrance before the principal Mass and the Simple Entrance before the other Masses. The Solemn Entrance, but not the Procession, may be repeated before other Masses.

FIRST FORM: THE PROCESSIONAt the scheduled time, the assembly gathers in a suitable place distinct from the church to which the procession will move. The faithful carry palm or other branches. The Priest and ministers put on red vestments for Mass and go to the place where the people have assembled. Meanwhile, the following or another appropriate chant is sung:

hoSanna to the Son of david* 21Acc #249 Chant, Mode VII

The Priest then greets the people and, making the sign of the cross, invites them to take a full part in the celebration. He may use these or similar words:

Dear brethren (brothers and sisters), since the beginning of Lent until now we have prepared our hearts by penance and charitable works. Today we gather together to herald with the whole Church the beginning of the celebration of our Lord’s Paschal Mystery, that is to say, of his Passion and Resurrection. For it was to accomplish this mystery that he entered his own city of Jerusalem.

The Passion according to St. Mark is proclaimed by the Deacon, or if there is no Deacon, by the Priest. It may also be read by lay readers, with the part of Christ reserved to the Priest, if possible. Speakers in the Passion Narrative are represented by these abbreviations:

N. The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christaccording to Mark

[The Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were to take place in twodays’ time. So the chief priests andthe scribes were seeking a way toarrest him by treachery and put him todeath. They said,

C. “Not during the festival, for fearthat there may be a riot amongthe people.”

N. When he was in Bethany reclining attable in the house of Simon the leper,a woman came with an alabasterjar of perfumed oil, costly genuinespikenard. She broke the alabaster jarand poured it on his head. There weresome who were indignant.

C. “Why has there been this waste ofperfumed oil? It could have beensold for more than three hundreddays’ wages and the money given tothe poor.”

N. They were infuriated with her.Jesus said,

† “Let her alone. Why do you make trouble for her? She has done a good thing for me. The poor you will always have with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them, but you will not always have me. She has done what she could. She has anticipated anointing my body for burial. Amen, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed to the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.”

N. Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went off to the chief priests to handhim over to them. When they heardhim they were pleased and promisedto pay him money. Then he looked foran opportunity to hand him over.

On the first day of the Feast ofUnleavened Bread, when theysacrificed the Passover lamb, hisdisciples said to him,

V. “Where do you want us to go andprepare for you to eat the Passover?”

1.

2.

From out of the depths,I cry to you, Lord;O hear the sound of my voice.Lord, open your ears and listen to me;I plead for your kindness, O God.

If you, O Lord, should number our sins, then Lord, who would survive? But you are forgiveness for our sins;for this we adore you, O God.

3.

4.

I trust in you, Lord, my soul looks to youas watchmen wait for the dawn. And more than the watchmenwait for the dawn, let Israel wait for the Lord.

For with you is found forgiveness of sin;you show your mercy to all.And you will deliver your chosen ones;deliver your people, O God.

Out of the depths, I cry to you, O Lord.
