Site layoutBy Dr. Mahdi Damghani

Efficient layout planning of a construction site is fundamental to any successful project undertaking. This task usually consists of identifying the temporary facilities needed to support construction operations, determining their size and shape, and positioning them in the unoccupied areas within the site boundaries.

Name some of the factors involved in site layout (organisation)?

Factors involved in site organisation: 1-The layout of the contractors temporary facilities 2- Assembling the various resources 3- Utilisation of the resources

What are a construction sites temporary facilities?

Layout of temporary facilities (TFs) 1- Access and exit arrangements 2-Temporary roads 3- location of hutments 4- Positioning of static plant 5- Material storage areas 6- Site security

What are the factors that need to be considered for access and exit arrangements???

Access and exit arrangements 1-The number (keep to minimum) 2- Location (avoid busy, narrow high speed roads) 3-Width of access (not less than 5 m) 4- Routing (1-way is preferable, forces to have another one for exit) 5- Cross-overs to the footpath Will aid material deliveries 6- Sign posting of access points

Name some of the construction materials for temporary roads ???

onstruction materials for temporary roads 1- Hardcore of a wide variety 2-Timber sleepers 3- Metal track 4- Plastic sheet

a) b) c) d)

Minimum bend Away from scaffolding, overhead cables, excavations or other temporary works. Should be repaired. Provision for turning and backing requirements to storage areas.

Temporary truck entrance at construction site provides all-weather access and reduces tracking of mud onto roads.

What are the hutment requirements???

Hutment requirements 1- Mess rooms 1 m2 per person (socialisation point) 2- Offices 4 m2 per person 3- Minimum ceiling height 2.4 m 4-Window area 20% of floor area 5- Opening window area 10% of floor area 6- Kept clean 7- Have proper foot path 8- Buildings 2 m apart for fire precautionsLocation on site for temporary accommodation: a) Permanent for duration of contract b) Adjacent to services, electric, water, drains, telephones c) Close to the site entrance d) Clear from setting out lines and excavations etc e) Clear of overhead work f) Have clear view of the site g) Walking distance kept to minimum

Name some of the static plant on construction sites???

Static plant 1-Tower cranes 2- Concrete batching plant 3- Hoists Make the horizontal movement of material to minimum Slewing operation must be kept to minimum

Should be located whereby the transportation distance is reduced to minimum. Access to Vehicles must be paid attention.

For everywhere

What is the purpose of site security???

For huts

Site security The need for site security is dependant upon: 1-The nature of work being carried out 2-The location of the site 3-The economics involved The purpose of security: 1- Internal 2- External Employees should be encouraged to see that the place of work is made secure: 1- Handtools 2-Portable power tools 3- Materials 4- Protective clothing 5- Plant

Explain the importance of fencing and hoarding??? Where hoarding is used instead of fencing???

Fence and Hoardings 1- A fence or hoarding (height=2.2 m) should be erected around the siteto prevent the public from wandering onto the site or to protect them from building work as this has legal implications.. 2- In city centre sites hoardings would be used. 3- The Local Authority must be informed of the duration which hoardings are to be in place, drawings must be submitted showing construction. 4- Permission must be obtained from the highways dept. and the Police for any temporary pavement crossing. The cost of reinstating the pavement must be paid to the Local Authority.

Explain the effect of having wireless system on construction site???

Many construction companies communicate between building sites and headquarters during the construction process to set deadlines, monitor progress and transfer data. This networking enables companies to run a more efficient construction project.

etailed attention to the lay-out of temporary facilities is rarely a waste of time, and usually result in considerable savings. The planning of a site layout in practice will depend upon a number of factors such as the time and money. The need for careful site layout and site organization planning becomes more relevant as the size and complexity of the construction operation increases, and especially where spare site space is very limited.

ommon facilities to be considered 1- Access/exit points 2-Temporary roads 3- Hutments 4- Static plant 5- Storage areas 6- Site security
