Suggestions for making the large picture/word vocabulary flashcards:

Print the pages (works best with thicker paper if you can afford it). Cut the flashcards in half (so that the word can be on the backside of the picture). Take markers and outline the edges of some of the lower-quality images. If you don’t like any of the pictures, feel free to change them in within the document.

If you used regular printer paper, cut an extra half sheet and place between the front and the back so nothing shows through when you hold up the card later.

Laminate the cards. They can be used in a variety of different ways and for multiple years.

Starting suggestions for using the larger teachers’ flashcards:

To introduce new vocabulary (pre-teach concepts and lexis through pictures) Comprehension checks (show the picture side and see if they know the word) Reading checks (using the written word side) Spelling checks (using the written word side) Writing assistance (as the notebook lines are present) Playing games (stick either side to the board and play a variety of games) Review activities (start or end lessons by reviewing previous lessons)

Suggestions for making the smaller student flashcards:

Print the pages (works best with thicker paper if you can afford it). Hint: use different colours of pastel paper if you want to make many class sets (this makes

it easier to locate which set a lost card may belong to when they are dropped in class or you can do this with the symbol page backside only and keep the working side white.)

Cut the flashcards on the lines. Perhaps use markers to outline the edges of some of the lower-quality images. If you don’t like any of the pictures, feel free to change it in within the document. Decide how you will use the cards. Perhaps picture+word will work or maybe you want a

set of cards that have nothing on the back (except the symbol page- so they can’t read through the cards). Choose carefully so you have the most variations of games you like.

Glue the pieces together and stick them into a laminating sheet with a bit of glue stick (so that they don’t slide during lamination). Try to leave space between them on the laminating sheet because the cards will last much longer if there is plastic laminated all around the paper. Once you’ve made the cards, put sets together use them for a variety of classroom activities and games such as those listed below.

Starting suggestions for using the smaller cards:

Memory matching game Go Fish matching game Matching words and pictures game Spelling/letters/phonics games Dominoes (once you have many units to work with) Speaking in pairs – quizzing each other back and forth Guess who/what I am – students give clues about what’s on their card to each other Review games – start lessons out by having them review previous lessons Counting (always have students count their cards in English before they give back to you)
