Unbeatable tailor-made skiing holidays since 1996

WELCOME TO SPRING

I was lucky enough to ski at resorts in Asia, North America and Europe this winter. Although a number of them didn’t receive their usual snowfall, they all produced fantastic skiing and I enjoyed an incredible diversity of ski experiences.

But it was the passion that the people I met along the way have for the sport and the mountains that stood out. To me this passion is the essence of skiing and snowboarding and absolutely key to us at Ski Safari.

This newsletter showcases a selection of the ski experiences we offer and explains how they can be booked for the best possible price. So, wherever you are thinking of going next winter, please do give us a call.... and let’s share the passion!

UTAH PARK CITY & CANYONS BECOME ONE RESORT

PUMP UP THE VOLUME!The USA’s biggest ski area is unveiled

Why this winter is shaping up to be, quite literally, the biggest season EVER for Park City Mountain Resort in Utah.

high-speed detachable chair, increasing the number of skiers carried.

Improved On-Mountain DiningAll the extra terrain to play in is going to work up an appetite! Thankfully, that’s been covered too. An extra 750 indoor restaurant seats will be created in one brand new and two renovated on-mountain eateries.

As well as being blessed with the ‘Greatest Snow on Earth™’, what is it about the Park City Mountain Resort ski area that continues to attract us Brits? Well, we think it’s the broad appeal of terrain to suit all levels of skiers and boarders: lots and lots of wide and immaculate groomers on King Con, hidden powder meadows in Dreamscape, and glades and bumps in McConkey’s Bowl. The award-winning freestyle terrain includes a super pipe and a thigh burning mile long terrain park. Before you head out, download the Epic Mix app, absolutely free, which tracks your vertical feet and progress!

Park City and Canyons have always been hugely popular, and rightly so, notching up on average over nine metres of snow each year. Yet, in the back of our minds, we always had a little pipe dream as to how they could become even better: to be linked as one skiable resort. As it turns out, it wasn’t just us that held that hope.

After purchasing Park City Mountain Resort last season, Vail Resorts (the folks behind the Epic Pass and already the owners of Canyons) have now announced a huge investment plan to update the area to the tune of a cool $50 million. Most significantly, the development plan is connecting the two mountains to create the largest single ski area in the USA - with more than 7,300 acres of skiable terrain.

THE PLANS A Brand New Interconnect GondolaAn eight-passenger, high-speed gondola running from the base of the existing Silverlode Lift at Park City to the Flat Iron Lift at Canyons. You’ll be able to ski or ride directly from the top of Pinecone Ridge to Park City’s Thaynes Canyon trail, through gated access, or to the Iron Mountain area at Canyons, through new trails from Pinecone Ridge.

Lift Upgrades in Park CityKing Con will be upgraded from a four to a six-person high-speed detachable chair, and Motherlode will switch from a fixed-grip triple to a 4-person

UTAH PARK CITY & CANYONS BECOME ONE RESORT

OFF MOUNTAIN Park City itself is a true, authentic ski town, incredibly proud of its silver-mining heritage. It’s most apparent on Main Street, lined with historic western style buildings filled with galleries, boutiques, restaurants and bars. This is where you’ll find the High West Distillery and Saloon, the world’s only ski-in ski-out distillery.

If you want to take some time off the slopes, the Park City shuttle is a free and efficient way to get between village bases, large supermarkets, the Tanger Outlet Shopping mall at Kimball Junction and the Olympic Ski Park. It runs frequently, picks up directly outside many hotels and runs late into the evening. You and your skis can be in Main Street or at the mountain bases within minutes.

WHERE TO STAY When it comes to choosing a place to stay, the accommodation throughout the town of Park City and Canyons is spread out and the choice can be overwhelming. Having seen or stayed at every single property we offer, our specialists can advise on the perfect hotel or condo for you.

BRITISH COLUMBIA WHISTLER

ON AND OFF THE SLOPES, WHISTLER IS A WINNERWhistler was the first resort we offered when founder and owner Richard Rice started Ski Safari - nearly 20 years ago! It remains our number one destination and every year its popularity grows.

This winter has been no different. We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive reviews we’ve received this season - thank you for taking the time to submit them. After his stay there this Easter with his wife, Sam, and their two children, here Richard shares his recommendations for the perfect visit during the school holidays.

NO LIMITS Whilst a quarter of the terrain is black or double-black diamond – keeping even the most advanced skiers challenged - nearly just as much is suited perfectly to beginners and the rest is incredible for intermediates. If you’ve never visited before, you’ve access to 200 runs, across two vast mountains linked by the world’s longest lift – the Peak 2 Peak gondola. Non-skiers can buy pedestrian passes, so

they can meet the skiers on the mountain for lunch and ride across the Peak 2 Peak.

If like me you’re after the very best powder, book a day or two with Whistler Heli-Skiing or Powder Mountain Cat-Skiing. These local operators specialise in getting you to the very freshest snow available.

A CLASS ACTThought ski school was just for beginners or kids? Ski School tuition in Whistler is outstanding – whatever your level or age! It’s a great way to unlearn bad habits, or push yourself that bit further; double-black moguls anyone? In general, group lessons are capped at four people too, meaning close guidance from highly qualified instructors.

OFF MOUNTAIN PURSUITSLegs need a day off? Non-skiers in your group? There really is SO much in resort to do! Fly through Whistler’s ancient forest above Fitzsimmons Creek with Ziptrek Ecotours, or hop on a snowmobile to seek out spectacular view points. Speed junkies can head straight to Whistler Sliding Centre to try bobsleigh or skeleton on the 2010 Olympic track. For something a little more relaxing, enjoy the tranquillity of the forest dog sledding with Canadian Wilderness Adventures, or chill out in the Scandinave Spa, Whistler’s Nordic-inspired ‘oasis of calm’, set in tranquil spruce and cedar forests.

ALBERTA BANFF & LAKE LOUISE

BIG, BEAUTIFUL BANFF

Collectively, Banff National Park’s three ski areas - Mt. Norquay, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Sunshine Village - access 8,000 acres of terrain. Lake Louise is vast and has the most spectacular views in Canada, Mt. Norquay keeps the fun going past the last lifts with night skiing and tubing, and Sunshine is famous for its all-natural snow and variety of terrain.

Now consider that you could access every chute, bowl and wide open run for six days and still get change from £200 – the tri area pass is ridiculously good value. What about getting to and from the mountains? The pass includes transportation to

and from the resorts. Plus, if you’re visiting between January and March, unlimited night skiing and riding at Mt. Norquay is included.

How about off the slopes? The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise’s snowshoeing tour is a magical, Narnia-like walk through untouched, deep powder around Lake Louise. Head to Banff Avenue for a theatrical dinner with a Greek flavour at Balkans – and be warned, you may have to smash a plate or two. You’ll find plenty of other excellent restaurants and bars there, plus pick up authentic Canadian gifts in Hudson’s Bay – Canada’s oldest department store.

“It’s the reliability and quality of the snow that keeps me going back. Also, it’s shaking off its old image; accommodation standards have improved massively with on-going extensive renovations and further investments ” Rupert, Canada Product Manager.

TWO ROADS, TWO RESORTS: COLORADO’S SIMPLEST TWIN CENTRE SKI HOLIDAY!

COLORADO WINTER PARK & STEAMBOAT TWIN CENTRE

Easy to reach from Denver International Airport, Winter Park and Steamboat are perfect powder partners.

This is an incredibly accessible Ski Safari which can be enjoyed either by transfer or by hire car. Head west out of Denver, straight up the I70 for an hour and half, then a hop, skip and a jump over the Berthoud Pass and you’re at Winter Park. Surprisingly, to date it’s been under the radar compared to its Colorado counterparts. However, with its fantastic snow record, proximity to Denver, excellent value for money and not least over 3,000 acres of terrain in seven ski areas, it’s fast becoming popular.

Winter Park has a ton of tree skiing. You’ll find perfect powder stashes in amongst the evergreens, just asking to be explored. Plus there’s a range of delightful cruisers – tight, steep, rolling, wide open – take your pick! Ask a local if it ever gets busier and they’ll laugh, grateful they have someone on the chair to pass the time with… this is as busy as it gets in Winter Park apparently.

Continue north for just two hours on highway 40 and you reach Steamboat. It’s an authentic ski town, proud of its western heritage, yet brimming with sophisticated bars and contemporary restaurants. The warm welcome is remarkable too. Ask any local about their home town and you’ll find they’re a font of historical knowledge and delighted to share it. A ride on a chair lift here is more informative than any guidebook or classroom!

£Of course, the thing that Steamboat is famed for is its Champagne Powder®, which keeps for days after a fall in untracked pockets in the equally abundant glades. The mountain is varied and the terrain vast and fun for all abilities, but a real mecca for intermediates, with some of the best groomers and snow in North America. Boarders and skiers of all abilities can weave through runs at different places, yet all end up at the same point. It’s quiet too - even on a busy weekend a lift queue is unlikely!

Getting to resort has never been easier: with more international flights going into Tokyo Haneda, there’s no need to transfer over from Tokyo Narita to catch your flight connection to Sapporo Chitose. We’re also looking forward to the completion of the bullet train (shinkansen) extension to Hakodate in Hokkaido in 2016 - making rail travel from Tokyo a viable alternative to flying.

“Something which excites everyone (including me!) about Japan is the food scene which, in Niseko, is particularly diverse. It forays excellently into the local Hokkaido produce, particularly seafood, as well as other much loved dishes; yakitori, ramen, nabe pots, curries and so much more.”

JAPAN FOCUS ON NISEKO

Japanese-born Andrea Selig visited Niseko at Christmas and was reminded of what an incredibly special place it is – on and off mountain.

Niseko is steadily becoming an internationally renowned resort. The base area has been developed gradually, with a greater selection of lodging, dining and activity options than ever before, after its latest improvements. Even given these changes, the mountain still remains uncrowded, including at New Year; you’ll never have to wait long at a lift.

THE SKIINGThe slopes and scenery are subtle in comparison to the striking mountains of the Alps and the Rockies, but provide a serene backdrop against which visitors can enjoy an entirely new ski experience.

Extensive skiing covers four interlinked areas: Grand Hirafu, Niseko Village, Annupuri and Hanazono. These are all accessible on the Niseko All Mountain lift pass. You can now even enjoy five days of skiing in Niseko included on the Epic Pass too.

Snow quality and quantity is the foremost reason why people visit Niseko again and again. The tree skiing is easily accessible off the side of the runs, or through the controlled gates which give you the option to explore the backcountry in a safe manner. Miharashi trees above the Hirafu gondola or Strawberry Fields in Hanazono are some of the highlights.

LAND OF THE RISING SUN... AND FALLING SNOW!When snow conditions across the world are variable, as they were last winter in particular, Japan – and specifically its flagship ski resort, Niseko – holds its own.

13 skisafari.com/niseko

JAPAN FOCUS ON NISEKO

The night skiing is a huge feature of the resort, and is included on the lift pass until 9pm every night.

“Storms drop consistent snowfalls right up until the middle of March each year, on average 15 metres annually.”

WHERE TO STAYAlthough the ski areas are all interconnected the three resort bases of Hirafu, Niseko Village and Annupuri are quite separate (for those who have been to Whistler – think Whistler Village, Blackcomb & Creekside). All are connected by a complimentary bus service which runs until late at night, but ensuring that the right location is chosen from the start means that you will make the most of your stay.

HIRAFU VILLAGEThe bustling base of Hirafu Village provides a variety of dining, nightlife and shopping experiences, situated off the main road running through town and Hirafu-zaka. Accommodation mainly consists of self-catering apartments, which range from basic to high end luxury and from studios to 5-bedrooms.

NISEKO VILLAGEHome to the ski-in ski-out Green Leaf Hotel, Kasara Townhouse and Hilton, this is a great choice for those looking for hassle-free access to the mountain in the morning. The newly developed village stroll with a selection of shops, restaurants and bars is nestled next to the Hilton and a short hop from the Green Leaf and Kasara Townhouse.

SCANDINAVIA HALF TERM

THE SECRET TO A HAPPY HALF TERM: SCANDINAVIA

Norway and Sweden continue to be popular alternatives to the Alps. In contrast to its more southerly counterparts, Scandinavia pleasantly surprises visitors with favorable prices, first class service and uncrowded slopes.

One of the most frequent misconceptions about a ski holiday in Scandinavia usually goes along the lines of “Isn’t it very cold, dark, expensive and flat?”

Crucially, the majority of the best skiing is to be found in the handpicked resorts we offer in southern Scandinavia. They are far enough north to have plentiful snow and long winter seasons, but

without the extreme temperatures and short days most associated with northern Scandinavia, which extends deep into the Arctic Circle.

On the whole, the terrain is that bit gentler and more forgiving, with the odd hidden surprise that will even make adventurous skiers smile. Where it really excels though is in the great range of confidence building

slopes. First timers will find their feet in no time, allowing them to enjoy the whole mountain experience. Intermediates will love the wide open spaces and quiet slopes, giving them the chance to pick their own line at their own pace.

Contrary to popular belief, prices are actually very reasonable - especially if you’re tied to the school holidays and particularly during half term. It’s not a budget destination by any means, the standard of living is incredibly high, but it is great value, especially when you consider the quality of the accommodation and its proximity to the slopes and ski school, which you’ll find hard to match elsewhere in Europe.

15 skisafari.com/scandinavia

ADD A CITY STAY IN OSLO As the cosmopolitan capital of Norway, Oslo is incredibly easy to access pre- or post-skiing. Adding a night or two before or after your ski holiday often opens up more flight and airport options too.

Oslo has a vibrant café and bar culture, complemented by world class museums and galleries. It’s compact enough to explore on foot, or alternatively make use of the excellent Oslo Pass, which grants you free access to all public transport and entry to over 30 museums and attractions.

Ever heard of city skiing? Oslo Winter Park is just 20 minutes away, and with 11 lifts and 18 runs that stay open from 10am to 10pm, and its spectacular views of the city in one direction and fjords in the other, this adds a really special dimension to your holiday.

HOW MUCH?In many cases, adding a city stay adds no more to the overall cost of your holiday, mainly due to the flight saving. In return you get a lot more holiday for your money. A 1 night Oslo add-on starts from just £59pp in a 3* hotel including breakfast.

“ Everything went smoothly; as you said, the train ride was very picturesque. Skiing was brilliant too, and they are very family-centric!” Natalie Parsons

“This is a great resort to combine downhill and cross-country skiing. Snow was excellent, more challenging slopes at Raudalen, some of the best skiing we have found.” Sarah Pestridge

FJORDS & MOUNTAINS: THE FAMILY SKI SAFARI

Ski two of Norway’s leading ski resorts, Geilo and Voss, uncover the country’s Viking heritage with a city stay in Oslo and/or Bergen and join them together with one of the greatest rail journeys in the world on a ski holiday that promises to be the adventure of a lifetime.

HAND-MADE FOR ALL ABILITIESA ski adventure doesn’t just have to be for expert skiers and boarders. Our Fjords and Mountains Ski Safari has been designed to suit first-timers and families alike. It’s not just about downhill skiing either. You can also enjoy the tranquillity of cross-country skiing and jaw dropping scenery. There are non-ski activities by the bucket load too; dog sledding and snowmobiling across frozen lakes and through pine forests, torch lit horsedrawn sleigh rides, or try your hand at ice fishing.

NO DRIVING REQUIRED!The journey to and from your resort of choice with this particular Ski Safari the travel is a highlight in its own right: the Bergen-Oslo line is one of the greatest rail journeys in the world. Relax in the comfort and convenience of a train journey that takes you to the mountains, passing fjords, pine forests, dramatic rock formations and awe inspiring national parks.

PICK AND MIXWe particularly love the flexibility of this Ski Safari and how it captures the essence of our signature multi-resort holidays. Extend your experience beyond the mountains and into Scandinavia’s cities: pick one or two coastal cities – cosmopolitan Oslo and/or beautiful Bergen. Then add on up to two winter ski resorts: Geilo and Voss. Whatever you choose, flying into Oslo and out of Bergen (or vice-versa) means you still enjoy the entire rail journey, and never cover the same ground twice during your itinerary.

SWITZERLAND LAAX

SAVING THE BEST UNTIL LAAX Regularly picking up Switzerland’s Best Ski Resort at the prestigious World Ski Awards, we showcase why Laax is a gold winner for UK skiers.

The ski resort Laax is made up of three villages: Flims, Laax and Falera. The quaintest of these is Flims, a traditional Swiss village. Picturesque chalets and farmhouses ladened with snow dot the lower slopes of the mountain and wind through the resort. Falera is a quiet hamlet inhabited mostly by locals. Then there’s Laax, and due to a number of international ski and snowboard events hosted there, this is the resort that puts the mountain on the map. Only a five minute drive down the road from Flims, Laax is a collection of modern buildings and accommodation constructed with the skier in mind; quick and easy access to the mountain, with a great selection of bars and restaurants for the all-important après and dining.

the old 3-seat La Siala lift replaced by a 10-person gondola, further improving connectivity on the mountain. For the freestylers, Laax leads Europe by having the best freestyle parks and the world’s largest half-pipe. The resort hosts a number of events each winter, where those not competing can sit and enjoy a Café Lutz and watch it all go down.

SKI SCHOOL & RESTAURANTS The ski school is world class, with lessons starting in both Flims and Laax. Group lessons are offered for 1 day, 3 days or 5 days, and there’s even a 2 day weekend course for beginners.

When the adrenalin subsides you will be in need of refreshment and with 17 mountain restaurants across the slopes, you’re guaranteed to find your next fix of Capruns or Älplermagronen!

THE TERRAIN The enormous ski area spans all three villages and gives access to an incredible variety of terrain. What’s more, with 70% of the terrain over 2000m, Laax can almost guarantee truly superb snow conditions all season long. You can access it easily from both Flims and Laax base station gondolas.

FIRST CLASS LIFTS, PARKS & EVENTS Never content with standing still, Laax is constantly updating its lift system and focusing on terrain expansion. In 2012 the resort installed the world’s first rotating chairlift, developed by Porsche Design Studios and in true Porsche style a sleek and fast way up to the majestic alps. Next winter will see
