    SLEEPING IN THE OLD BED

    WHERE MY GRANDFATHER AND

HIS FATHERS BEFORE HIM WERE BORN

I lie down in the flowers of an old tapestry and put my face to the old designs and sleep myself back into seed

    the family patterns hold me

awake, I trace the lineage back again to my face and hands and see the family lines flower on my skin

I lie in a heraldry of grace and simple kin
