INTRODUCTION LTE (Long Term Evolution) is the last step toward the 4th generation – 4G. 4G is a group of radio technologies designed to increase the capacity and speed

of mobile telephone networks.

3GPP Spec for 4G: – DL peak rates of at least 100 Mbps

- Peak download rates of 326.4 Mbps for 4x4 antennas, 172.8 Mbps for 2x2 antennas for every 20 MHz of spectrum.

– UL peak rates of data at least 50 Mbps- Peak upload rates of 86.4 Mbps for every 20 MHz of spectrum

– RTT of less than 10 m-sec.– LTE supports scalable carrier bandwidths, from 20 MHz down to 1.4

MHz LTE supports SAE (System Architecture Evolution)

– A flat IP-based network architecture designed to replace the GPRS Core Network and ensure support for, and mobility between, some legacy or non-3GPP systems, for example GPRS/WiMax etc

LTE will also support seamless handover to cells with older network technology such as GSM, cdmaOne, W-CDMA (UMTS), and CDMA2000.

LTE is the best technology right now to fulfill all of the requirements that were laid down by various telecom governing bodies and has now been endorsed by all the major players in telecom (both Vendors & Operators) as the 4G technology.

LTE in ME, GULF, SEA

2010 is the most important year for LTE:– Our whole world is bandwidth hungry in serious need of a

better and faster technology: Blog

– With Global economic recovery already underway, more and more operators) will be interested in investing in LTE.

– Operators still on 2G may find directly moving to LTE a better option!

3G??– At some point in very near future, some bigger telecom

names within Asia (in the relatively stable economies in Asia like GCC, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia etc) would give roadmap for LTE as well.

Even for countries that have an oil based economy, investing in LTE would mean a lot of cash inflow in this difficult times.

– UAE’s was the 1st to launch HSDPA in Gulf– Today UAE has reached record levels of Mobile Broadband

usage, penetration and traffic. LTE Compliant Devices

– In 2010, we would see a lot of LTE ready devices available in the market.

– As soon as LTE compliant devices are available in the market, the bandwidth hungry population and the tech savvy modern workforce in the GULF countries will settle for nothing short of LTE.

The advent of LTE has already started in the GULF!

LTE Competence in GSDC-L – Why?

Just like GSDC Global Competence Centre in Australia, we can have “GSDC Regional Competence Centre in Lebanon”

Due to the strategic position of GSDC Lebanon within Ericsson, GSDC Lebanon can become the sole supplier of:

- LTE radio design services- LTE radio optimization services, and- SAE core network design/optimization

services

to the ME, GULF, north Africa, east Europe, Central Asia and even China.

LTE Competence in GSDC-L – Why?

In GSDC-L we have ample resources with sound technical skills.

In WCDMA and HSPA, a lot of GSDCs are ahead of us.

– But, LTE is still very new!– So an early start/initiative towards LTE competence

would mean a great way to make our mark and put us on the map of LTE competence all across the Ericsson and our global customers

LTE Competence in GSDC-L – How?

1. Training Courses2. OJT (On Job Trainings):

– USA, China, Australia, Sweden etc– Advantage of OJTs

impress the host organizations with their technical knowledge and project delivery skills.

- Right after OJT, host org will definitely like them to be placed on the same LTE Project

Team members on OJT would always be on lookout for new opportunities (2G, 3G) and send back leads.

Persons going for OJT can also support host org (if required) with:

› 2G/3G RF Projects (or)- This way there can be an agreement for OJT to be

on softer terms like:› Travel Cost (GSDC-L) Living Cost (Host

Org)– OJT model with lesser cost and more value!

3. GSDC-L’s LTE Competence TIGER TEAM

LTE Competence Tiger Team in GSDC-L Tiger Team to start LTE competence initiative with:

Internal Workshops Seminars Centra Sessions

Tiger team should be given a task to: study, discuss within the team organize local seminars as well as Ericsson-wide centra sessions.

Tiger team members to be sent to various countries in MUME, MUNA and MU-Saudi Arabia to deliver LTE Introductory as well as advanced workshops:

For operators in host organizations. Costs can be incurred to host organizations as these

workshops would be for their own benefit and competence buildup.

In the start the workshops can be a mix of sales & technical.

This would be an ADDITIONAL APs on the members of Tiger Team apart from their regular tasks and their project commitments, which shouldn't and will not suffer.

ADDITIONAL APs need to be followed up carefully and consistently by the LTE DRIVERS.

Advantage 1st initiative advantage:

– If we can send a couple or even 1 resource to perform RND, Initial tuning etc of a LTE project in the ME/GCC/Africa etc then in long term, we would be on the winning end for all the future LTE projects in at-least Asia and Africa.

Not even a project! Even if someone from GSDC can go on OJT and prove his/her technical and analytical prowess then the host organization will definitely be interested in having him/her on that very LTE project.

In China LTE is already underway with a team dedicated for LTE. Soon a full fledge rollout will start in China as well.

In case we are able to build a decent level of LTE competence in the next few quarters, GSDC Lebanon will have a very good chance of capturing long term LTE optimization contracts with many operators.

And with time as the rollout takes momentum, we can even venture into the US market.

Long Term Plans: TT, A New Innovative Idea Very soon, the whole concept of optimization and design services will

change. A strict boundary between different technologies will not remain feasible. In order to sell services we would have to innovate and make our team

competent in all technologies.– The customers have started asking for solutions that would enable them

to have 2G, 3G and 4G all in same site.- MIC1 has asked us if we can make a design that would

be 2G, 3G and LTE compatible for 2010 budget and same question has been asked to NSN.

– We can send a small team to carry out RAN audit spanning all the three technologies and their inter-working features.

– Such services will be surely a winner with the customer and good service delivery methods and procedure will ensure a long term business for GSDC Lebanon.

TT or T-Square or double-T or TTSD– Triple Technology Service Delivery

Procedural and Methodical approach to take care of RND, RNI and NPO services for 2G, 3G & 4G.

– Triple Technology Radio Specialists

With Ericsson’s new concept EVO-RAN and RBS 6000, it is going to be one network with all 3 Technologies anyway!

Conclusion A win-win situation. 1st Initiative Advantage

– Initiative lost now gain for other GSDCs

Support from the top management!– Discussions with Doman Managers– Discussions with CA Manager Core, Access & CPM– Discussions with GSDC-L Director– Discussions at Global Services HQ level– Discussions at MUs level– Discussions in Stockholm

The higher management at various levels should be convinced that apart from GSDC-Australia or GSDC-Spain Ericsson should consider investing in LTE competence in other GSDCs as well.

Great business option for GSDC-L financially! The T-Square Advantage With 3G and 2G competence already developed in other GSDCs,

this offers a great way for GSDC-L to make a permanent name and repute for itself by venturing into a new technology.

……Whenever there is a talk of LTE: GSDC-A & GSDC-Lebanon will be the only few they would talk about……
