The$Best$Christmas$Present$It's%that%(me%of%year...%yes,%the%Christmas%Season!%%How%I've%spent%many%years%drinking%myself%to%oblivion%to%make%it%through%the%month%of%December!%%I%dis(nctly%remember%buyig%a%six%pack%to%drink%on%the%way%to%my%mother's%on%Christmas%Day%(who%lived%24%miles%down%the%street),%%just%to%be%able%to%simply%BE%with%the%family.%%It%was%just%PAIN%to%be%around%my%mother%sober.%%She%did%live%long%enough%to%see%me%get%sober%and%I%was%able%to%make%amends%to%her.%%S(ll,%Christmas%Days%past%as%an%ac(ve%drunk%serve%as%memories%of%where%I%do%not%want%to%go%ever%again!%

12. Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our Traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.

Twelve—And finally, we of Alcoholics Anonymous believe that the principle of anonymity has an immense spiritual significance. It reminds us that we are to place principles before personalities; that we are actually to practice a gen- uine humility. This to the end that our great blessings may never spoil us; that we shall forever live in thankful contemplation of Him who presides over us all.

It%all%started%the%day%a%woman%I%didn't%know%(a%stranger%in%the%rooms%of%Alcoholics%Anonymous)%gave%me%her%phone%number%and%said,%"Call%Me".%%I%was%so%lost,%so%incoherent,%so%s(nky,%but%I%didn't%know%what%to%do%or%how%to%live%even%one%day%without%a%beer,%so%I%called%her.%%I%asked%about%sponsorship.%%When%we%met%for%the%first%(me,%she%sat%next%to%me%and%I%read%the%sentences%I%had%underlined%in%red%in%the%Big%Book%(looking%back,%I%was%so%s(nky,%so%shaky,%so%incoherent,%this%woman%defin(ely%demonstrated%"pa(ence,%tolerance,%understanding,%and%love"%towards%me).%%All%she%did%was%sit%by%me%and%listen,%gave%me%her%(me%and%a^en(on.%%Not%once%did%her%cell%phone%ring.%%She%gave%her%ALL,%to%help%me.%%What%%a%giO!%%This,%this%ac(on,%her%transmission%of%"The%Message",%is%the%best%present%I%have%ever%received.%%The%giO%of%being%totally%present%with%me,%saved%my%life.%

Now,%now%I%give%this%giO%to%others.%%This%sobriety%I%carry%is%with%me%momentUtoUmoment%as%I%experience%a%love%and%compassion%I%have%never%known%before.%%I%carry%this%sobriety%in%all%my%ac(ons.%%I%give%the%same%"pa(ence,%tolerance,%understanding,%and%love"%that%was%given%to%me%by%one%woman%to%other%women%in%recovery%now%and%even%to%people%in%traffic%and%in%a%grocery%store%line!%%I%have%prac(ced%so%many%religions%in%my%life%U%givingUup%things%to%follow%this%and%that%in%hopes%of%finding%God.%%All%my%spiritual%searches%have%brought%me%here,%to%this%program%of%Alcoholics%Anonymous.%%I%am%telling%you,%the%buck%stops%here.%%The%search%is%over.%%God%is%here,%now.%%Us,%Group%Of%Drunks%(G.O.D.)%know%the%value%of%our%sobriety%today,%whether%it's%one%day%or%50%years...%it%is%a%clarity,%a%serenity,%and%truly%a%reason%to%wakeUup%Christmas%morning%and%BE%HAPPY%with%the%present%that%we%WILL%NOT%BE%UNWRAPPING,%but%will%be%FEELING%in%Love%and%Light%and%Joy...%Our%Sobriety!%%Not%only%is%it%the%best%present%we%have%received,%but%the%best%present%we%can%GIVE%to%others%around%us!%%Yay...%no%more%beer%breath%on%Christmas%Day!%%To%all%my%fellows%I%wish%to%say%Thank%You%for%my%Christmas%Present,%and%may%you%have%a%very,%very%blessed%Holiday%Season!%%Ho!%Ho!%Ho!%

Recovery:$Bill$Step$by$Step$Step%Twelve:%Having%had%a%spiritual%awakening%as%the%result%of%these%steps%we%tried%to%carry%this%message%to%alcoholics%and%prac(ce%these%principles%in%all%our%affairs.%

AA%was%born%when%a%sober%alcoholic%on%a%business%trip%saved%his%shaky%sobriety%by%prac(cing%our%TwelOh%Step%and%reaching%out%to%help%another%alcoholic.%If%Bill%W%had%not%connected%with%Dr.%Bob%during%that%trip,%the%world%might%be%a%different%place.%The%Big%Book%tells%us%that%when%all%else%fails,%nothing%will%so%much%insure%immunity%from%drinking%as%intensive%work%with%other%alcoholics.%Our%TwelOh%Step%enshrines%one%of%my%favorite%paradoxes%of%AA;%that%we%keep%our%sobriety%by%freely%giving%it%away%to%others.%

The%AA%Big%Book%states%in%“We%Agnos(cs”%that%its%main%object%is%“to%enable%you%to%find%a%Power%greater%than%yourself%which%will%solve%your%problem.”%As%my%powerlessness%over%alcohol%grew,%my%need%for%a%higher%power%became%acute.%Pain%drove%me%to%my%knees%where%I%prayed%for%help%and%relief.%%Bolts%of%light%pierced%the%darkness%of%denial%when%friends,%family,%and%coworkers%confronted%me%about%my%drinking%and%encouraged%me%to%seek%help.%

More%light%arrived%in%the%rooms%of%AA%where%I%met%sober%alcoholics%who%spoke%my%language%and%understood%my%struggles.%%Listening%to%members%share%and%watching%them%live%sober%gave%me%hope%and%created%a%sense%of%peace,%comfort,%and%connectedness.%Choosing%a%sponsor%at%three%months%sober%and%working%the%steps%with%that%sponsor%eliminated%my%desire%to%drink%and%put%me%on%a%spiritual%journey%that%con(nues%to%this%day.%%An%endless%stream%of%mini%awakenings%came%with%exploring%my%life%and%character%during%step%work.%

In%AA%I%experienced%a%spiritual%awakening%or%“personality%change”%sufficient%to%bring%about%recovery%from%alcoholism.%The%TwelOh%Step%suggests%that%I%carry%this%message%to%alcoholics%who%s(ll%suffer.%%I%found%that%there%are%countless%opportuni(es%to%carry%the%message%of%recovery.%When%I%showed%up%at%my%first%AA%mee(ng,%I%had%no%idea%why%the%room%was%full%of%people%and%all%of%the%work%it%took%for%that%mee(ng%to%exist.%%I%learned%that%it%takes%the%hard%work,%sacrifice,%and%commitment%of%AA%members%to%create%and%sustain%mee(ngs%and%other%AA%ac(vi(es%that%give%us%opportuni(es%to%carry%our%message.%%

Our%TwelOh%Step%goes%on%to%say%I%am%to%prac(ce%these%principles%in%all%of%my%affairs.%I%took%this%to%mean%I%needed%to%prac(ce%the%AA%way%of%life%in%every%aspect%of%my%life%including%family,%work,%school,%church%and%in%my%community.%But%what%principles%am%I%to%prac(ce?%%The%steps%include%principles%such%as%

honesty,%faith,%trust,%courage,%and%more.%We%encounter%more%great%principles%in%our%Tradi(ons%and%Concepts.%Though%the%list%of%principles%associated%with%our%program%is%long%**%(see%below),%one%word%might%sum%them%up%U%Love.%Giving%to%others%with%no%thought%of%reward%is%the%very%founda(on%of%our%program.%I%might%add%the%word%Gra(tude%since%I%find%that%it%is%my%profound%sense%of%Gra(tude%for%the%life%I%received%in%AA%that%powers%my%Love.%

As%I%finished%my%FiOh%Step%with%a%Jesuit%Priest,%he%told%me%that%God’s%will%for%me%was%to%love%God,%myself,%and%others.%I%had%no%idea%what%it%would%take%to%put%that%concept%into%prac(ce.%Finishing%the%Twelve%Steps%and%a^emp(ng%to%prac(ce%the%principles%of%AA%in%all%my%affairs,%gave%me%a%fuller%understanding%of%the%monumental%nature%of%the%task.%Thankfully,%to%maintain%my%sobriety,%I%do%not%have%to%be%a%saint%and%need%only%be%willing%to%grow%along%spiritual%lines.%

In%working%AA’s%Twelve%Steps,%I%can%a^est%to%the%fact%that%my%life%took%on%new%meaning.%I%enjoyed%recovering,%watching%others%recover,%and%seeing%them%help%others.%My%deep%alcoholic%loneliness%vanished%as%I%grew%into%our%fellowship%with%a%host%of%new%friends.%I%am%glad%I%did%not%miss%this%experience%and%the%frequent%contact%with%newcomers%and%my%fellow%AA%members%that%is%the%bright%spot%of%my%life.%
