The vision of James Smithson, “to found at Washington an establish-ment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge,” became a reality when the U.S. Congress created the Smithsonian Institution in 1846.

Today, the Smithsonian is the world’s largest museum and research complex. Smithsonian Affiliations connects our partner organizations to this unparalleled network of museums, research centers, and outreach offices to bring the Smithsonian to people in their own communities.

From art to zoology, Smithsonian collections are unequalled in their breadth and scope. Our scholarship, artifacts, and exhibitions document the world in all of its beauty, diversity, and complexity.

Smithsonian Affiliations assists in identifying artifact loans, connecting with curators and collections specialists, and finding speakers and programs that complement Affiliate interests.

The Smithsonian offers a wide range of exciting and engaging traveling exhibi-tions. We help Affiliates find the exhibits that inspire life-long learning and match the needs of all visitors, spaces, budgets, and schedules.

sharing our resourcesPeople are the Smithso-nian’s greatest resource. Our collections come alive through the knowledge and insight of curators, scien-tists, historians, educators, collections specialists, and conservators.

Affiliates enjoy unique access to the Smithsonian. We coordinate behind-the-scenes visits to meet colleagues and to learn more about research and artifacts. We also arrange special activities at the Smithsonian for Affiliate members, boards, or small study groups.

sharing our skillsThe Smithsonian provides endless opportunities to learn. Smithsonian Affilia-tions offers a summer Intern Partnership Program for college students sponsored by Affiliate museums. Also, Affiliate staff have the opportunity to work side-by-side with their Smithsonian counterparts through the Visiting Profes-sionals Program. Through these programs, Affiliates advance their own projects, increase skills, and develop strong relationships with Smithsonian staff.

logo and taglineAffiliates may use the special Smithsonian logo and tagline “in association with the Smithsonian” on brochures, buildings, and other approved media.

smithsonian affiliate membership programOnly Affiliates have the unique benefit of offer-ing two memberships in one — membership in the Smithsonian combined with membership in their own organization. Smithsonian membership features an annual subscription to the Smithsonian Magazine or Air & Space Magazine, along with discounts at Smithsonian retail outlets.

business and develop-ment opportunitiesSeveral revenue-generating programs have been devel-oped to provide enhanced business, marketing, and program opportunities in partnership with the Smithsonian. They include Smithsonian-branded travel, merchandise, commis-sioned artwork, and Smith-sonian Folkways recordings. Smithsonian Affiliates increase visibility locally and nationally by collabo-rating with the Smithsonian on workshops and projects such as Smithsonian Magazine’s Museum Day, a museum studies certificate program, and the Affiliations National Conference.
