There are many different housing alternatives available on or near the SMU campus,including graduate school residence halls, university-owned housing, apartments, townhouses,condominiums, duplexes, and single-family homes. We hope this information will provide you witha starting point in your search.

Included under some listings are students' comments. SMU has not made any effort toverify any of the statements. These comments should be read as opinions of individual students.

Please note this information was compiled in Spring 2008 and is subject to change.

GRADUATE RESIDENCE HALLS

SMU offers two graduate residence halls on campus: Martin and Hawk Halls. MartinHall, an efficiency apartment hall, houses single and married graduate students. Hawk Hall, a one-bedroom apartment facility, houses married students or students with children in one-bedroomapartments. •

Both residence hall apartments are furnished with a bed, desk and a dre~ser and include acloset, kitchenette, bathroom and telephone. Each residence hall has a live-in staff member whoserves as the hall director. Social and educational programming is offered in all halls. All residencehalls have a lounge area with color TV. Laundry facilities are also located in each builclillg. Roomrent includes local telephone service, voice mail, and Ethernet connections to the University'scomputer system. Meal plans are available, but not required. All residence halls are air-conditionedand are smoke-free.

The Housing contract is for the entire academic year (roughly mid-August to mid-May).Academic year room rates for 2007-2008 range from $6,200 to $7,350.

A completed housing application must be filed with the SMU Department of Residence Lifeand Student Housing. Space for graduate students on campus is very limited. All applicants areplaced on a waiting list and assignments are made during the summer. Housing for graduatestudents is NOT guaranteed.

UNIVERSITY-OWNED HOUSING

SMU also owns and manages off-campus apartments, which are available to graduatestudents. These apartments are convenient to campus and range in accommodations and cost.They are located in the Highland Park Independent School District. Hillcrest Manor is reservedfor law students and is located across from the Law School. Law students receive priority forassignment to Hillcrest Manor.

Manor apartments [an apartment building reserved for law students], which arelocated righc across the street from the law school (you don't have to drive tocampus). On many occasions I have woken up 20 minutes before class and stillmake it on time. Plus it's pretty cheap, bills are paid, the walls are thick, and thespace is generous. However, it's pretty ugly and there isn't a poo!."

APARTMENTS

Many students live off-campus in non-SMU housing. Many have used an apartment locatorservice to help them locate housing. Also, some of the very nice downtown. apartments (particularly the JPI properties) have anagreement that they will allocate twenty percent of their units to an Affordable Housing programwith extremely low rent. Obviously, this is not advertised as waiting lists can get long. Scholarshipsand school loans are accepted as proof of income. Law students nsually qualify due to their highertuition. Students should ask (as early as possible) whether apartments have such a program and ifthey can be put on the waiting list. The amount saved on rent can be significant.
