Vol: 1 Issue : 1 Date: March 2008

In the fall of 2005, The Sean Noland Founda-tion was established by a group of friends who were shar-ing a common grief over the loss of a very special friend. The group wanted to find a way to honor and pay tribute to a man like no other and someone who could never be replaced. It was decided that with our combined resources, friends, co-workers, and people whose lives were touched by Sean, we could do something for a common good in his name. Wheth-er on a sailboat, skydiving, snowmobiling, skiing, backpacking around Australia or spending time with family and friends, Sean loved life and spent all of his time living it to the fullest.

The Sean Noland Foundation is a way of keeping alive the memory of someone who touched our lives and made us bet-ter people just by knowing him. He opened our eyes to the world around us and showed us everything it has to offer. Tonight is the beginning of many gatherings of people who were touched by our late great friend. Please read through this brochure to learn more about how the Sean Noland Foundation is honoring Sean, making a difference in the lives of others and how you can help!

Sean Noland Foundation is officially a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organiza-tion! After much hardwork, committ-ment and a fair amount of haggling with the IRS, as of January 2008, we

are officially a Non-Profit foundation. Special thanks must go out to Jeffrey Woods for all his hard work and time in wading through the legal documents and submitting our application.

To Know Sean Noland was to love him. He embraced life in a way seldom seen. His friendships were genuine and long lasting, knowing no bounds through time or space. Sean viewed each new day as a challenge and a blessing, and he tried to instill those feelings into each friend and family member. Sean was always an active participant in any physi-cal or athletic event that presented itself. In high school, he earned varsity letters in both football and basketball. Partic-ipating in sports helped open the door for Sean to meet and make a multitude of new friends. By the time he graduated from Antioch High School, Sean had established himself as a well-rounded, well-liked, and well-respected individual, not just in his school, but also in his community-at-large. Very little changed for Sean while attending The University of Iowa. He joined the Phi Delta Theta frater-nity and was instantly placed in positions of authority and leadership. He branched out beyond his own fraternity and made friends from all walks of life while attending Iowa. In fact, he was not only elected President of his fraternity, but he was also elected Vice-President of the entire University of Iowa Greek system. No small feat.

The Sean Noland Foundation is our way of giving something back to the community in a way we feel can best honor our friend and honor his legacy. I feel it is true testament to the influence and ways in which Sean touched the lives of those around him, be it friend, family or community member. We look forward to what the future of the Sean Noland Foundation holds, and plan on continuing to give back to the community through scholarship, donations and support in hopes we might be able to impact the lives of others the way Sean impacted our lives. We would like to invite you to participate whereever you would like, as we cannot do this alone. If you would like to volunteer, or have ideas or would just like to share with us, feel free to contact us.

Giving Back in our own way

THE SEAN NOLAND FOUNDATION

One of Sean’s favorite loves was sailing. This was a love instilled in him by his beloved father, who, like Sean, was taken from this earth far too early. It was Sean’s passion and love for sailing that truly formed his char-acter. Sailing taught Sean how to lead others. Sailing taught Sean how to keep a calm head while everyone around was losing theirs. Sailing taught Sean that there was always a new horizon laying over the next one, and those horizons need to be explored. Sean seemed to be destined for greatness. He had so much to live for. One could spend years puzzling over what makes the fates decide to take one our brightest stars before their light has reached its greatest potential. However, there is a much greater lesson to be learned from Sean’s life than his death. He left us all a legacy to fulfill. That legacy is a love of life, friendship, and family. Please join us tonight and at future SNF events in spreading his love of life while also enriching the lives of our youth who demonstrate similar likes and interests.

On behalf of the Sean Noland Foundation board of directors we send our deepest gratitude and most sincere thanks to all of our family, friends and contributors who have made the creation of this Foundation a reality. Every penny donated has been put to use as we faced the many obstacles it took to become incorporated as non-profit status. All the time people have spent assisting our fundraiser events, along with the professional help provided by a few, is a blessing with meaning beyond words. We will continue to host our annual events, and we will continue to lean on friends and family for support so we can continue to be a productive charity. Please know that everyone who has ever been inspired by Sean at some point in their life is the true reason we can continue to provide services for local youths in the name of our Foundation.

The Board of the Sean Noland Foundation

The Sean Noland Foundation exists by the dedication and committment and donation of our volunteers and Board Members. Currently the Board of the Sean Noland Founda-tion consists of:

There have been numerous others who have volunteered their time and ideas to making the Foundation a reality; and to them we are very grateful.

An Editorial by Brian Deines“President” 8/30/2005

I received word yesterday that Sean Noland passed away. As a former president of the fraternity, one year removed, he spoke to my group on the first day of Rush. At the time I thought him goofy, sitting with his chair backwards, intense, with those piercing, beady blue eyes. He spoke to us 17 and 18 year old boys of getting his job after college and needing to speak of nothing other than being a fraternity man. His informal speech was impressive even if its contents were abstract. Needless to say I joined his fraternity for reasons other than my job opportunities, but as I came to know him better, it became clear that Sean did not owe his job to the fraternity anyway. He was a clear leader. Not many things were more clear than who was leading the charge with him in the room...It was the 6’6” slim, stork of a guy with a wit and tongue that could cut diamonds. Just intelligent, exuding confidence, funny, intimidating. Like many leaders, he had his close inner-circle and beyond that, he was more icon than friend, at least to us younger guys. With pressure mounting on us pledges to win “Low Bond” (and thus the lowest fraternal bond num-ber, most pull, first serving at dinner, shotgun riding in cars, best seat on the couch, etc.) I had been ordered in passing by another alumni to memorize The Phikeia Oath. The words we repeated, on “Bid night”, which pledged our allegiance to the greater things of the Fraternity. Upon review, there were actually a few lines I found and still find poignant. I always liked the idea that as a Phi, my goal was to “transmit the fraternity to those who may follow after, not only not less, but greater than it was transmitted to me.” I can honestly say that as my own career at Phi Delt played out, my goal was to motivate and lead like Sean Noland had. I’m not the only one who could say this. He was ultimately the model for multiple generations of Phi’s. You think President here, but also Precedent. His reach was certainly wider than his reach (that’s saying something). And when he used to stick his head over the top of the shower door and smile while I was in there with my girlfreind, it was funny, but also symbolic of how you always knew he kept a caring eye on his fraternity and his guys. It’s with a sad heart that I say if ever one Phi left his brothers and certainly the Fraternity better than when he found us, it was Sean Noland. Now, with his work here on Earth finished, he has gone home. And when the best of a generation is taken early, the only assumption is that he has finished his work, completed God’s puzzle created uniquely for him. For us, though we are seperated by the greatest of distance, he leaves behind a clue --the road map of his life....And the certainty that he’ll be looking down, sticking his head over the shower door, smiling, checking in on us.1695-Proud To Be A Phi

Antioch Community High School

Sean Noland Foundation Memorial Scholarship

We have developed the Sean Noland Memorial Scholarship through Antioch Community High School that will be given

each year to a senior who is involved in many activities, demon-strates financial need, and portrays the same lively spirit we all

loved in Sean. The Sean Noland Foundation received nine appli-cations from highly qualified individuals and as of April 20, 2007 the winner and first ever recipient of the Sean Noland Memorial

Scholarship was chosen. Our commitment to this year’s recipient is $500 per semester that he/she maintains above average grades.

Our first scholarship was given to Jason Sippy, who attended the University of Iowa for the year 2007/2008. The Scholarship was generously matched by Karen Noland, making the total scholar-

ship given in our first year $2,000.

Chicago Yacht Club FoundationYouth Sailing Program

CYC Youth Sailing Program:

The Chicago Yacht Club Foundation started over 15 years ago and over this period has funded many programs for youth and

disabled sailing in Chicago. Because of Sean’s immense love of sailing, the Sean Noland Foundation has made a commitment to the Chicago Yacht Club Foundation to assist them with creating opportunities for children to learn and enjoy the sport of sailing.

We are pleased to announce that because of the support of our contributors, the Sean Noland Foundation has already given the CYC Youth Sailing Program a $500 donation for the 2007 sailing year. With your help we can increase this contribution and help more young individuals follow their dream of sailing. This was Sean’s passion, and we are honored to play a role in helping our

youth pursue their passions.
