H & P Series UPS SNMP adapter

Installation and commissioning

Page 2: SNMP installation

The SNMP adapter allows network and internet access to your UPS; the SPower SNMP adapter additionally has ports for an environment sensor and a modem. The installation is simple and can be completed within 10 minutes. A cross point screwdriver will be required.

1 The SNMP adapter is packaged with a software CDROM, a modem lead and a short form instruction book. The CDROM contains a comprehensive

manual in PDF format. It is suggested that you either print this out or save the file to a convenient location on your hard drive.

2 The SNMP adapter is packaged to protect it from electrostatic damage - handle carefully by it’s edges once removed from this packaging. Note the legend

on the front plate the ports are marked LAN / Modem / Ext. You will need to connect to the LAN port later.

Switch off the UPS - or change to bypass mode using the unit’s front switches (P Series)

3 Unscrew and remove the blanking plate at the rear of the C,H or P Series SPower UPS. Check that the SNMP card is correctly oriented to slide into

the recess (especially on rack mount UPS as the slot is vertical).

Slide in the adapter and using the screws removed earlier fasten into position.

4 Connect the ethernet patch cable (not supplied) to the LAN socket

5 Connect the other end of the ethernet patch cable to the network (usually to an ethernet switch).

6 Switch on the UPS (or switch back to on-line mode if a P Series).

Note that the indicator on the UPS port used on the hub is illuminated.

7 you are now ready to load the software - place the CDROM in a drive of any network connected machine (usually firstly on the one that will be used

to administer the system).

8 The CDROM will automatically load and execute a shore flash sequence. You can then use the left hand panel to navigate to the required content.

9 Click the Program Installation button and note the options available in the sub menu that appears on the right.

This document assumes that the software is to be loaded to Windows. If not then proceed as shown in the menu.

There are two software packages to load; one is ClientMate (for alarms) and the other is Netility (for administration). Either can be loaded first - here we will first load ClientMate.

10 Click “Install Clientmate for Windows”

11The software will load ad show this screen - note that the software is not in communication with the SNMP adapter yet.

Click “Config” on this menu >>>

12 If your system has DCHP then an address for the SNMP card will be issued - click “Query” - the subscreen (below) appears and if DHCP

has detected the card then it will be shown, click to highlight the card from the “Available List” and then click “Connect”.

The host connection will now show in the Settings menu - press OK and the screen will show that the SNMP card is now in communication (bottom of page).

If DHCP is not available then simply type your preferred TCP/IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx into the Host Connection field.

You may wish to revisit Config later to set the alarm delays and auto-file shutdown delays - the defaults are typical. This procedure should be repeated on all UPS power supported machines.

13 The Clientmate software is now loaded - the Clientmate window can be minimised or

closed. Clientmate will run in the task bar and start automatically on Windows start-up (file is CMD32.exe)

NOTE - the addresses show are from the demonstration facility and will differ to those required.

14 Now select the Netility program from the menu. The software will install - select YES as needed. The Netility window will open

and show any connected SNMP adapters - if DHCP addressed then the card will be automatically detected.

If not then add the TCP/IP address using the window that opens from “Configure”. This will be the same one as sued in the ClientMate setup.

Select “Launch Device” to administer UPS settings, advanced SNMP settings and other powerful features (overview screen shown below) - use the menus to the left.

Access can also be achieved using a web browser and entering the SNMP card’s TCP/IP address (no WWW needed!)

15 NOTE: the Information submenu in the NetAgent window has the possibility to show a dashboard and trend display of the main UPS

electrical characteristics.

This display requires the JAVA plug-in for explorer - this will usually be installed in any modern version of explorer - or can be downloaded.

Once that the JAVA applet is installed then the dashboard will be visible.

17Optionally the Environmental monitor “NetFeeler” unit can now be connected to the SNMP adapter “Ext” port using the RJ11 /

RJ45 cable that is provided with the Netfeeler unit.

The Netility software is used to set and display alarms such as gas / smoke / temperature (and water level if that model of NetFeeler is fitted).

16 There are numerous settings that can be made in the SNMP screens - these are mostly self

explanatory and a HELP file is included. Some of the detail can be confirmed from the particular SPower datasheet with which the SNMP is adapter is being used.
