About the Composer

Frank holds two college degrees, a Bachelor of Music Education (Violin Concentration)from lndiana University School of Music and a Master of Science Degree in SchoolAdministration from Old Dominion University School of Education. ln addition, he was aprofessional violinist with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra for 30 years and continuesperforming in a chamber orchestra and string quartet. He has dedicated his writing talentsto composing pieces for beginning string orchestras that are fun, easy, and entertaining.Over 90% of his works are original and delightfully entertaining. He considers his pieces tobe thought of as "musical desserts"; pieces you do not want to overuse, but nonethelessuse appropriately.

Most of his of pieces are intentionally designed in such a way that practically all studentswill experience substantial success the first time they begin their study. Again, one mustremember the real purpose of these works is to insure the students "instant success" thevery first time they are introduced. Frank firmly believes, instant success is a greatmotivator and a huge confidence builder which will hopefully encourage them to have theconfidence and desire to accept the challenge to study works of a more scholarly nature. To keep things simple, Frank intentionally avoids using slurs as well as low and highfingers, as they tend to dramatically slow down the desired fast learning curve he hopesthe students will achieve. Once again, his main goal is to motivate, not complicate. Eachpiece has a "Foreword" section which outlines the piece and provides teaching tips andsuggestions. ln addition, each piece has a Treble Clef Viola part which can be used aseither a2nd violin part or as a means of augmenting your viola section.MSB Publishing is proud to carry Frank's full complement of music and looks forward tohis new works.

Stand Up, Sit Down, Rock! Rock! Rock!FORF,WORD_

if you are iookrng for a very easy piece titeratty jammed packed with action, look nofurther, YOU HAVE JUST FOUND lT!. This coutd be the strrng teacher's answer to "HeavyMeta[". I ca[[ it "Heavy Wood". lf done the way it is choreographed, yoU might be"arrested" for "steating the show". At first gtance, the opening bars remind you of a Sundaymorning church service, but Look out when you get to measure no. 8. Church is out, thepreach'n rs done and the fun is begun! Your students are going to literalty "Rock'n Rott" tothe very end. But before we get to the action part, I need to address the opening 7 bars, which are the most important musicatty.

As stated, the opening must be very sustajned (ben tenuto,)and ptayed as legato as possibte. There is some very mitd dissonance as in measure no.4 between the viotas and vioi.ins" ltwas no accident, lptanned it that way. Basses have a note in 112 position, vrotas have a low2 finger, and viotins, viotas, and cettos atl have a simpte stur. Other than that, it's a realpiece of cake with att the icing.

The "Rock" section beginning with the "spoken diatogue" in measure no.8 shoutd be a

fairty brisk tempo. Locate a friend who has some facitity on the piano, as the piano reattybares the brunt of the technicaI difficutty in the "Rock" section. The string parts arerrdicutousty simpte, and are purposely designed that way so the students can concentrateon atl the theotrics. After they have [earned aLt the "body" maneuvers, they witl likeLy pass

the audition for the "ROCKETTES".

To the best of my limited abitities, I have written atl the choreography in the score and atlthe string parts. The fottowing is a measure by measure description of atl the maneuversyour students must do and specificatty when and how to do them. So [et's get out themmagnifying gtasses and a "soft" beverage of choice and go through "THE STAND UP, SITDOWN, ROCK! ROCK! ROCK! ROUTINE"

Meas. 7-9 Music stops abruptly at the end of meas. 7. Students quickty lay their bows onthe music stand. On a cue from the director they begin the short narration inthe rhythm and tempo indrcated.

ln meas. 8 when they say the word "UP" they stand up and when they say thewoi'd "DOWI{" they sit-down. On'rhe 1st "Rock" they rotI theii-r-ight shoutder'to the right, on the 2nd "Rock, they rot[ their left shoutder to the [eft, onthe 3rd "Rock", they rotl the shoutder back to normaI position.

Bass play PIZZ and other sections count the rneasures' rests quietly tothemselves. I wrote in the "counting" as an aid for them to learn how tocount mutti-measure rests.

CELLOS (PIZZ) join the BASSES - Vtns. & Vl.as keep counting rests quietLy

VIOLINS & VIOLAS make their entrance playing the "Rock" theme - lT'S VERYE-Z "MBn'means pl.ay at "Middle of the Bow" and "tip" means ptay at the "tip"of the bow
