Senior Social Studies Requirements

• 20 weeks of Economics & 20 weeks of Government as required by NYS, but not Regents courses.

• At Kenmore West there are two different options for each requirement:

Economics & Economic Decision Making – or –

A.P. Microeconomics

Participation in Government – or –

A.P. Government

Economics & Economic Decision Making

• Great in class work on life relevant topics building on what students already know!!

• Stock Market Projects!!

• Economics of Life Projects!!

• NYS required course for graduation, but no Regent’s exam. Students also can earn an exemption from this exam by carrying a 90 average for the semester.

• Possible Teachers: Mrs. Bieron, Mr. Knight, Mrs. Phillips, Mrs. White

• Outside of High School Applications:• Day-to-Day knowledge of good decision

making• Any college field that is business related!!

Participation in Government

• Seniors will have the opportunity to learn what it means to be an citizen in America.

• As part of the course requirement, students will actively participate with local government by• Attending Public Policy Meetings• Performing Community Service• Researching Issues• Lobbying Congress

• Students will have the opportunity to discuss/debate hot topic issues, register to vote, learn about the election process, the power of political parties, as well as the influence of media and special interests!!

• Outside of High School Applications:• How to be an educated, active citizen• Any college field that is Political Science

Alternatives for Seniors

• All seniors take Government and Economics, there are only “regents” sections.

• However there are Advanced Placement alternatives for each course!!

A.P. Microeconomics

• Prerequisites: Demonstrates strong ability to read and analyze data. Student must have at least an 85% average in math and social studies 11.

• We will study the theories of pricing, profit, budgeting, etc. At this level we will use math to prove economic theories (+,-,×,÷ and graphing on an x/y axis).

A.P. Microeconomics

• Qualifies for NYS requirement for economics.

• Cool scheduling: it runs for the whole year but every-other-day (opposite of AP Government). This leaves an opportunity for extra time to complete work and get extra help!!

• Learn about what is going on with our economy and how to survive!

economical• Great foundation for degrees in business,

finance, and of course economics!• Life relevant material, students come in

with great foundation that we will build on.

Regents Exam• Summer Assignment

• Reaction guide on Liberty & Government• Read political fiction• Use chapters 1 & 2 of textbook• Internet research on current political topic
