Social Studies Kid Friendly Objectives

U.S. History I will describe the motivations and challenges of people migrating to the U.S. I will describe the development of the American economy including:

• geographical factors • role of the frontier and agriculture • impact of technological change and urbanization • resources, society, politics and culture • changing relationships between government and the economy • I will distinguish the changing role of checks and balances, separation of powers, federalism, and judicial review.

I will compare the political developments in the U.S. during Reconstruction, struggle for civil rights, expanding role of government, expanding participation in political processes.

I will compare and contrast the roles and influence of political parties and interest groups on government systems. I will explain the importance of majority rule and minority rights, constitution, civil rights, and checks and balances in

U.S. History from Reconstruction to the present. I will distinguish the changing role of checks and balances, separation of powers, federalism, and judicial review I will identify the functions and effects of economic institutions of the U.S. economy. I will understand the roles of people, business, and government in the economic system of the U.S. I will recognize the movements of people and the impact on different regions. I will identify different regions and their characteristics. I will analyze the change in U.S. domestic and foreign policies including: isolationism, immigration, Manifest Destiny, imperialism, New Deal, two World Wars, and global interdependence I will assess the twentieth century wars including their causes, consequences, and peace efforts as well as comparisons. I will describe the role of the U.S. in the global economy. I will be able to locate cities in Missouri, the U.S. and world; states of the U.S., countries of the world, oceans and continents as well as topographic features in the world I will understand the human and physical characteristics of a place and why they change. I will understand patterns and issues with regard to population distribution, demographics, settlements, migrations, cultures and economic systems. I will evaluate the causes and effects of the changing roles of class, race, gender, and age in society I will identify the major social institutions and describe how they fulfill human needs. I will understand the difference between fact, opinion, bias and points of view in sources. I will compare and contrast primary and secondary sources. I will interpret the various social studies resources. I will hypothesize the consequences for institutions that fail to meet the needs of individuals, and individuals who fail to carry out their personal responsibilities.
