I am very happy to report that we are making great progress and thatthings are looking very good for 2011 and beyond for our division and ourindustry. Maureen Reitman is leading a team to put on excitingprogramming in Anaheim at the MDM West conference during the week ofFeb. 7th. We will arrange to have some networking event (perhaps aluncheon) that week so keep your ears open for SPE’s activities in SoCal.

Our division is also putting together a speakers list in conjunction withwhat we are calling the Travelling MiniTec Outreach. This program willoffer a technical program that can be scheduled by interested Sections forhalf or full day programs. This program can then be repeated in venuesaround the SPE world limited only by the travel flexibility of our speakers.Jim Madenjian is leading this effort for our division. From The Editor:We introduce a new feature with this issue of the Medical Plastics Division newsletter - acommunity bulletin board whose purpose is to let members exchange news and informationon a more personal level than division announcements. I decided to call it theINTERPENTRATING NETWORK as an allusion to both our professional affiliations and to itsmore social purpose. But perhaps I was trying to be too clever…. It is intended to allow anymember of the Medical Plastics Division to publish any announcement. Any member ofMPD may announce the receipt of an award, publishing a paper, looking for a job, know ofan open position, finding a job or getting promoted. It is to connect and inform, notintended to advertise. If you want more information about one of the announcements,

Industrial Product Design Award 2010Sponsored by Plastics and Rubber Weekly Magazine andSponsored by Plastics and Rubber Weekly Magazine and
The British Plastics Federation
Industrial Product DesignWinner: Kinneir Dufort and Bristol Maid
Kinneir Dufort, working with Hospital Metal Craft (Bristol Maid), has created a hospitalbedside cabinet that is chemical resistant and easily cleaned. The challenge was laiddown by the Department of Health and the Design Council to produce a bedside cabinetdesign that would reduce deaths from clostridium difficile and MRSA. Only plastics couldanswer the brief.
The finished product has wipe clean castors, easy clean handles, and drawers that sit flushat the back. Its design allows patients to store their belongings easily – it has a top shelf, bottom tray, hook for coats and jackets, and an open access middle shelf. The icing onthe cake is a lockable top drawer activated by a RF transponder on the patient’s wristband. It is also suitable for both left or right hand bedsides.
Kinneir and HMC carried out weeks of research inKinneir and HMC carried out weeks of research inhospitals and created design prototypes to gain morefeedback before the final design was launched in Aprilof this year. The unibody of the design required asingle skin of PE antistatic plastic, light in weight andimpermeable to infections, with no joints or junctionsto harbour infections. However, traditional rotationalmoulded products with highly textured finishes wouldmoulded products with highly textured finishes wouldharbour infections. So an ultra high quality CNCtooling method was used, which impressed the judgesnotably. Using CNC’d billet aluminum rather thantraditional cast tooling eliminates tooling porosity andsuperficial defects, while providing a finish nearinjection moulded quality.
The judges said: “This is a high profile product thatdeals with the very real problem of infection control inhospitals. You can see this becoming a very familiarproduct for many years to come.” The product hasattracted rave reviews and there is now a six-monthwaiting list and additional manufacturing resources areb i ht t t d dbeing sought to meet demand.
