ConferenceorganizedbytheSociologyofEducationResearchNetworkoftheSwissSociologicalAssociation4th&5thNovember2016,CampusPHZürich

InthepastthedevelopmentofeducationalsociologywithinSwitzerland’svariouslanguageregionshasdiffered.IntheFrench-speakingpartofSwitzerlandeducationalsociologyhasdrawnupontheFrenchtraditionofthesociologyofschool,whichisenrichedbybothpolitical-scientificandpost-Bourdieuperspectives.IntheGerman-speakingpart,researchineducationalsociologyhasoftenbeenbasedonsociologicalsystemstheory,rationalchoiceapproaches,discourseanalysisororganizationalsociology.Bothlanguageregionshaveincommonthatresearchineducationalsociologynotonlycoversgeneraleducationbutalsofocusesonvocationaleducation,highereducation,academiccareersetc.

TheinfluenceofthedifferentschoolsofthoughtintheFrench-andGerman-speakingsocialscienceshaveproducedamultitudeoftheoreticalandmethodologicalapproacheswithinthesub-disciplineofeducationalsociology.TogetherwiththeincreasingnumberofarticlesintheSwissJournalofSociologycoveringeducationaltopics,thismultitudehighlightsthepotentialofthestillsmallbutemergingfieldofSwisseducationalsociology.ThishaspromptedtheSwissSociologyofEducationResearchNetwork(createdinearly2012)toorganizeafirstconference.Ittookplacein2014inFribourgwiththeaimofprovidinganoverviewofcurrentresearchineducationalsociologyinSwitzerland.Atthisconferenceafruitfulexchangebetweenthelanguageregionsandvarioustheoreticaltraditionsstartedsuccessfully.Thissecondconferenceaimsatfollowingupandcarryingonthisexchange.
