SOLKANE® AppPeople who work with refrigerants will benefit from this practical service. Solvay Fluor has now complemented its SOLKANE® calculation program with a free App. Th is allows mobile cal-culation of refrigerant data on a smart-phone for the first time. The App is a hugely practical aid for all producers, installers, engineers and sales person-nel in the fields of air-conditioning and refrigeration.

The well-known Windows-based SOLKANE® software is designed for calculations involving complex material data and refrigerant circuits: in contrast the SOLKANE® App provides fast, straightforward access to key informa-tion for popular refrigerants.

After download and installation, every-one in the air conditioning and refrigera-tion industries can calculate saturation vapour pressures and temperatures in bar/°C and psi/°F quickly and easily. A programmable refrigerant data slider gives fast access to all temperatures and pressures and also allows direct comparisons between different refrig-erants.The product information section presents users with key technical infor-mation about pertinent SOLKANE® refrigerants.

The SOLKANE® App can be down-loaded from the App-Store and Google Play: keyword “Solkane”. The App is free of charge.

The ChallengeIn 1994, Solvay Fluor was the first com-pany world-wide to stop their produc-tion and sales of CFC’s. New refriger-ants with higher efficiency and environ-mentally friendly properties had to be developed and implemented using a safe stewardship system right through to final recycling.

Solvay’s fluorine business has grown at a fast pace over recent years, hav-ing doubled its size from 1995 until

2002, and more than doubling that again since then. The refrigerant busi-ness has also grown during that time, in such a way that Solvay Fluor can be considered today as one of the leading manufacturers of fluorinated refriger-ants worldwide.

The SituationRefrigerants play a hidden, but vital role in people’s lives. The cold chain is essential for feeding the world’s population and this cold chain relies on high performance refrigerants. Without refrigerants, today people’s living standards would be consider-ably lower. Comfortable temperatures in working and living environments play an important part in sustaining the quality of life.

The wide variation of applications and temperature levels in refrigeration and air conditioning requires a broad selec-tion of specific refrigerants. Our com-prehensive SOLKANE® line of refrig-erants provides a solution for virtually every problem:

The ConceptSolvay’s fully integrated production concept for SOLKANE® refrigerants ensures close control from mining of fluorspar all the way to packaged refrig-erants – ready to be charged! But we don’t stop there: Our unique recycling system generates useful raw materials from used refrigerants. Responsible care is a management policy.

Choosing the right refrigerant and the right supplier goes far beyond evaluat-ing physical and environmental prop-erties and specifications. Refrigerants are “system components” and perfor-mance evaluation must be directed at the system rather than its components – with respect to:

Safety

■■ All SOLKANE® HFC refrigerants achieve the highest safety class in all globally accepted standards for refrigerant and refrigeration safety.

■■ They are non-flammable and very low in toxicity.

■■ Because of their safety properties, SOLKANE® refrigerants have the least restrictions with respect to installation sites and charge sizes.

Ecology■■ Environmental performance of refrigeration and A/C systems is primarily dictated by energy effi-ciency. Systems with SOLKANE® refrigerants achieve top ranks in this respect.

■■ Solvay Fluor runs a thermal separa-tion unit at its Frankfurt site, where used refrigerants (CFCs, HCFCs and HFCs), after careful recovery from the used refrigeration and A/C systems by skilled maintenance partners, are cracked into hydro-fluoric acid and hydrochloric acid: Both of which are raw materials that are used again for industrial pro-duction and completely converted into new products.

■■ SOLKANE® HFC refrigerants have zero ODP.

Economy■■ Using SOLKANE® refrigerants will save life cycle costs in various ways.

■■ High energy efficiency ensures low operating costs.

■■ The high safety class saves sub-stantially in respect to installation sites and safety related system auxiliaries.

■■ Excellent material compatibil ity allows system designs with conventional and cost effective construction materials.
