1. ALL tHeSe tHinGS i’LL Do (Lyrics: Sandra Taylor, tune: Scott Murray) 4:32

Scott Murray visited the Bethany Christian Trust women’s weekly drop-in to chat to the women about their stories. On his first visit he was invited to sit at a table and chatted to two women for a while. After half an hour, another woman at the table quietly said to him, “I’ve got words that I’ve had in my head since I was a schoolgirl. Would you like me to write them down?” These are Sandra’s words, and we’re very touched that she’s shared them with us.

Sandra says, “I was only 15 when I wrote it. I’ve always been interested in poetry. I remember being good at words at school and I always did my homework. I was dreaming about the kind of man I would marry and how I would treat him.” Years later Sandra met John, and they got engaged on 24th March 2007!

2. SHe GLowS LiKe tHe Sun(David Francis/Mairi Campbell) 3:19

She Glows Like The Sun comes from Ray Main’s story, which he put together into a book at The Alma Project. Ray spoke to Inspire tutor Ruth Kirkpatrick about the parts of his story which he would like to feature in a song, which were then fashioned by David Francis and Mairi Campbell into this track.

David and Mairi added, “The title and central idea of the song came from a remark of Ray’s when he was asked if he could sum up his partner Doreen in a phrase. We’re honoured to have been asked to make this song.”

3. iF onLy (Lyrics: Sarah Thomson, groove: Conrad Molleson) 4:04

Sarah and Inspire tutor Conrad had a chat about the creation of ‘If Only’:“The inspiration for If Only came from Love...it was written about a person very close at the time.

It expresses the effect that music has on others…I liked this track, because it’s unlike any other. It came out of messing about with the sound of the phone…mixing it in with the idea of the lyrics during sessions held at music group in Cyrenians community hostel on Ferry Road, Leith.

We worked at getting a solid rhythm going, tried a bassline here and threw in an harmony idea there, then set the words to a groove…The to & fro between the two voices seemed to work well, and although a lot of re-workings and other ideas never made it to the final mix, the process was pretty interesting.

I hope that Eminem picks it up and it makes it to #1 in the download charts.”

4. DuKe Street to JericHo (Scott Murray) 6:17

Inspire tutor Scott Murray worked with the men’s music group at The Bethany Christian Trust, and has also become a volunteer at the weekly men’s drop-in at the YMCA Acorn Centre. While working on this song, Scott also visited the group who write The Bugle, the Bethany Trust service users’ magazine.

Scott says: “Very soon after the start of the project in September 2012 I became aware of the growing anxiety of the men about their benefits, and started to note their thoughts.

The song is not one person’s voice; many folk contributed to it. They spoke of their never-ending struggle to get through each day, the difficulties they had faced in their lives, how some were managing to make a better life, how they had to walk from handout to handout because they couldn’t afford the fares.

They can hear their voices in the song. Thanks to the folk at the Bugle, Cha, John, Simon, Charlie, Eddie, and all the others who helped.”

The Scots Music Group’s Inspire programme aims to broaden access to community music by working in partnership with local support organisations in Edinburgh to offer opportunities for vulnerable people in the community to take part in music and song.

The first Scots Music Group Inspire Project took place in 2010-11. It culminated in a showcase concert during the Leith Festival which surpassed all our expectations, and which was hailed by the audience as “professional”, “moving” and “inspirational”.

The second project, Inspire 2 (2012-June 2013), worked in partnership with The Alma Project, The Bethany Christian Trust, YMCA Edinburgh, Edinburgh Cyrenians and The Rock Trust. Alongside weekly music groups, participants were supported and encouraged to try out instruments, go to local gigs, meet musicians and perform at community events. Over 120 different people have attended our groups.

During Inspire 2, songs, thoughts and ideas were gathered from members of the groups. Matheu Watson took five of the songs and produced the four tracks featured here along with one more, Time, which is available on the Inspire website.

Many more songs, tunes and stories were created during the project – these tracks are a snapshot of the wealth and variety of creativity which we’ve been privileged to share in Inspire 2. We see Inspire as a two-way process: while we hope to inspire our group members, they equally inspire and move us with their talents, insights, humour and courage.

The Scots Music Group hopes to continue its Inspire work. More details about the project can be found at: www.inspirescotsmusic.org.uk
