Congratulations
There were many awards given out at the MD 19 October Convention in Whistler. Here are a few: Bill Emery of the Esquimalt Lions, Jim Bailey of the Sooke Lions and Sue Ford of the Sooke Harbourside Lions were awarded Club Secretary Excellence. Dianne Kent of the Sooke Harbourside Lions was awarded Club President Excellence. Brian Morin of the Royal Oak & Esquimalt Lions was awarded Zone Chairperson Excellence. Tour de Rock/Cops for Cancer

The Tour de Rock riders rolled into Sooke on October 3rd, 2018 greeting students at Edward Milne Community School and the students from Saseenos, Sooke and Poirier who lined the streets to greet them. The Tour de Rock riders arrived at Journey Middle School earlier than expected, but we were ready to greet them. The students of Journey lined the road in and filled the gym. It was great to see many of our Lions from the Sooke Club, Sooke District Lioness and of course Sooke Harbourside. The Mayor, Maja Tait, welcomed everyone, the bagpiper, Jason From, a local RCMP Officer piped the riders in. The noise level increased immensely. Head shaves were in progress as Barb the Barber shaved 4 students’ heads for the cause. The riders were introduced and cheques were presented from the Sooke District Lioness ($200) and the Sooke Harbourside Lions ($2587.00). The big presentation was from the proceeds of the joint effort of the Lions and Lioness clubs of Sooke. A very large, literally, cheque was presented to the Cops for Cancer in the amount of $30,000.00. We were advised that this was the largest donation they had received to date on their ride. Andy the Pizza guy provided tons of pizza and everyone enjoyed this and the many other goodies provided for the Riders. It is very difficult to transfer the emotions and feelings of that day to paper. There were tears, laughter and lots of hugs. It is our hope that one day no child will ever have to deal with cancer. Twoonie Tuesday, October 16
Wow! What a busy project for our club and one that gives everyone a real feel-good feeling. Twoonie Tuesday was Tuesday October 16,2018 and the Weather Fairies were helping us all day long; we were graced with sunshine and warmth at all the collection stations except one and We all know which location that was: Village Foods LOL! So, following our wonderful Twoonie Tuesday Guidelines and Timelines, Posters were placed throughout the community and Collection Cannisters also. I placed only 11 collection cannisters throughout the downtown core approximately 2 weeks prior to the 16th. Although this is one way to promote this project it is not profitable as only $101.10 was the total donated. Something for our committee to rethink. Permission was granted to allow us to canvass at the usual venues Shoppers, Western Foods, the Liquor Store, Home Hardware, Village Foods and Pharmasave. Our Large signs were placed Thanks to Dino Vieira and Martin Reinders. Also, Thanks to Tony at Sooke Signs and Andy at Sooke 2 for 1 Pizza. We had 2 Roadside Waves prior to the 16th and a Thankyou Wave on the 17. Thanks all who came out to wave. Thankfully the weather was very cooperative every time. On the Big Day our volunteer Lions began canvassing at 9am and we wrapped up at 6pm so a total of 21 Harbourside Lions, 3 Sooke Lions, 1 Food Bank Volunteer and 2 Pemberton Holmes Realtors collected donations from our wonderful and very generous community. A Giant Thankyou to Godfrey Medhurst who Spent the day collecting the monies collected and counting and rolling all the coins and bills. Godfrey counted and rolled $2405.00. Plus we were given 1 Gold Rush Lotto Ticket and 1 Serious Coffee Gift Card. I am please to say that with our club donation added to what we collected on Twoonie Tuesday we have written a Cheque to the Sooke Food Bank totalling $4905.00 Respectfully Submitted Lion Nancy Reinders

MD 19 Convention – Oct 25-27
Here are some of the highlights of the 97th MD 19 Annual Convention which took place in Whistler and was hosted by the Ambleside Tiddlycove and District 19-A. The theme was “Fun, Fellowship and Celebration”, and it was all that and more! There were many interesting seminars offered as well as self-guided tours. Halloween Family Feud was a lot of fun at “Fun Night” and our own Sooke Harbourside Lions judged all the wonderful costumes worn by all the guests! The Keynote Speaker at the Lions Appreciation Banquet was International Director Pat Vannett who is a member of the Mandan Lions Club and a Lion since 2003.

Mammogram Clinic October
Our October Babies Lions Bev Lewis & Margaret Woodland
The Sooke Harbourside Lions have been volunteering at the Mobile Mammography Clinic for several years. Our volunteers are tasked with greeting the clients and insuring the necessary paperwork is done properly. The Mammography Mobile Unit is parked at Shoppers Drugmart in Sooke usually for 3 ½ days. Mammograms are scheduled from 8:30 am thru to 5: 30 pm. This year the van was parked in Sooke from October 2 thru October 5. A total of 10 shifts of between 2 ½ and 3 ½ hours were scheduled and covered by 10 Harbourside Lions totalling 24 hours. And 174 clients were screened. Thank you to Cheryl Kirkpatrick, Sue Ford, Brenda Brown, Jo Russell, Ann-Marie St. Laurent, Jeanette Umbach, Linda Mooney, Kim Stone, Maxine Medhurst and Diane McNeil This is a service project for our community and one totally worth participating in. The time goes by quickly and the nurses are fun to work beside. I would encourage all our membership to consider participating in this project in the future.
