As one of the world’s largest muslim Country, Indonesia

will celebrate the feast of Muslims named Idul Fitri or

Lebaran in August 2014, including Bali. Although the

majority of the population of Bali is hindu, but we will feel

the impact and also celebrate it.

Lebaran holiday officially lasts for two days in the

Indonesian calendar, although the government usually

declares a few days before and after the Lebaran as

a bank holiday. Many individuals or families, especially

Muslims take paid time off from their workplace during

these days.

Therefore, bali as tourist destination for domestic tourist

will be crowded by homecomers or family who want to

spend a holiday.

The roads will be jammed, tourist attraction will be full,

but enjoy it as part of life in Indonesia, who knows you

will have the opportunity to enjoy ketupat and opor as

traditional dishes for lebaran.

We are from soul of sanur magazine would like to wish

you a holy Idul Fitri 1435 H and express our cincerest

apology, mohon maaf lahir dan batin.

AboutSanur

Based on stories told by elders, before the Sanur Village and intaran Village, there was Penyaringan Village. According to Bendesa Adat (traditional village chief) of Penyaringan Village, Sanur, Made Purna Wirasa, there was a history

behind the name of Penyaringan. "Once upon a time, there was a mighty priest named ida Pedanda Sakti ender. Although he was a priest, on the daily basis, he was also a farmer. He spent most of his times working on his rice field,"Purna Wirasa explained.

One day, a local resident came to ida Pedanda Sakti ender's griya (house) to ask for holly water. However, ida Pedanda was not home. "That local resident then told to look for ida Pedanda at the rice field, where he spent his times," Purna Wirasa said. That local resident intended to ask ida Pedanda to went back to his griya to made him holly water for cremation ritual. Apparently, ida Pedanda was not willing to leave his rice field. Instead, he made the holly water at the rice field. With his holly mantras, Ida Pedanda made holly water for cremation ritual. He then gave the holly water to that man.

"The holly water was made out of water from the rice field that the it was not clear. Hence, the man doubted the holly water he had asked," said Purna Wirasa. Feeling unsure with the holly water, that man them throw the holly water on to the road. The holly water splashed on a corpse dog. Miracalously, the dog rose immediately,

Page 19: Soul of sanur vin4

barked and ran away. Stunned by the power of the magical holly water, the man then ran back to Ida Pedanda's rice field. He came before the mighty priest and beg for more holly water. "That man made mistake. He knew should never doubt the power of powerful mantras of the mighty priest," he said.

However, ida Pedanda was not willing to granted the man's wish. "ida Pedanda said that he knew what had happened. The man then told to went back to the place where he throw the holly water and filtered the splashed of the holly water," he said.

At once, the man rushed back to the place he threw the holly water. He then filtered the holly water. "Since that time, this place was named Penyaringan (means filter)," he explained.

Unfortunately, up to now, no one ever knew where ida Pedanda Sakti ender live nor his griya. Nowadays, the household number in Penyaringan is not high. "There is 34 households in Penyaringan now. Consists of one traditional village and one banjar. Compared to the previous generation, during the time of my granparents, there was only 9 households here. And during the time of my father, there were 17 households here. The residents of Penyaringan was never a high number," said Purna Wirasa.

Destination Management is a subject of growing importance as destinations compete to provide the highest quality of experience for visitors and to manage the impacts of

tourism on host communities & environment.

To compete effectively, destinations have to deliver wonderful experience and excellent value to visitors. The business of tourism is complex and fragmented and from the time that visitors arrive in the destination, until they leave, the quality of their experience is affected by many services and experiences, including a range of public and private services, community interaction, environment and hospitality. delivering excellent value will depend on many organizations working together in unity. destination management calls for a coalition of these different interests to work towards a common goal to ensure the viability and integrity of their destinations now, and for the future.

Many destinations now have destination management organizations or dMOs to lead the way. Traditionally responsible for destination marketing, the role of the dMO is becoming far broader. dMOs today should not only lead on marketing but must also be strategic leaders in destination development. This role requires them to drive and coordinate destination management activities within framework of a coherent strategy. Promotion must attract people to visit in the first place; creating a suitable environment and quality delivery on the ground will ensure that visitors’ expectations are met at the destination and that they

Page 25: Soul of sanur vin4

then both recommend the destination to others and return themselves on a future occasions.

Based on the Ministry of Tourism and Creative economy of Republic of indonesia, Sanur appointed as one of sixteen National Tourism Strategic destination (Kawasan Strategis Pariwisata Nasional or KSPN). Therefore on the 1st dMO Sanur Meeting on June 2014, Public representative, community, association, industry, and the governments agreed and committed to run the activities of DMO Sanur. It will be a countinues program and have a specific technical work that can bring destination to a competitiveness in an international level. The dMO activities in the future will follow mutual agreement in the forum dmo sanur

Depo Cemara is a dumping-site owned by Sanur Kaja Village. Chief Village of Sanur Kaja Made Sudana who is also manager of depo Cemara said that depo Cemara was initiated during

the leadership of ida Bagus Paramartha, 10 years ago. At that time, untransported waste scattered littering housing area there.

Being uncomfortable with the condition, Made Karsa then create a depot to manage the waste in the village. in eight years, as housing in Sanur Kaja were growing, the waste production in the village also grow bigger. To manage proper waste management , a special waste sorting process is applied.

Now, the 12 acre depo Cemara has became the place of waste sorting and chopping for Sanur Kaja area. Six workers were employed to chop and sort the organic and inorganic waste. And day by day, the volume of waste dump in to this depot keep growing. Hence, since 2013, waste from all over Sanur Kaja were no longer hauled by cart. instead, they use garbage car. "We work by procedure here. And we are not alone. There is the third party involved. All waste here were transformed in to biogas and compost," said Made Sudana.

depo Cemara not only handle the waste of Sanur Kaja community, but also hotels and restaurants in that area. depo Cemara's personnels pick waste after 8 AM. They pick the untransported waste by denpasar Cleanliness and Gardening Service (dKP) . "We have regulation to regulate this, we always remind the community here not to dump waste carelessly. We also educate the community to maximize things they have," he explained.

Made Sudana stated that nowadays, the result of sorted waste reach a container. "during the feast days, waste volume twice usual amount. even in regular dasys, the volume of the waste is big. There are seven dusun (small community in one village) that we serve," he said. He admits that the depot now is lack of human resource in collecting waste. Therefore, we try to educate the community to dump their waste properly.

in the other hand, to ensure the continuation of the depot, Made Sudana said that the depot build a joint effort with third parrty. "Third party here to ensure the funding of the depot. For example, the depot need Rp100 billion to provide waste bin and other tools, " he said.

With just a glance, the fine art of Sanur can easily be identified. Sanur has some worldwide known artists, such as ida Bagus Putu Purwa, Tejo Astwa, and Apal Hindrawan," he said.

Igo added, building one specific characteristic is not an easy task. Those well-known painter from Sanur prove themselves. And most of all, they help the young artists to develop their creativity. "i considers Teja Astwa as the best for he manage to applicate pop art with contemporary style," he said.

He explained, Sanur Kauh Village has shoreline and mangrove forests as their maritime potential. They also have various culinary heritage such as the famous suckling pig and betutu chicken. "These potential made Sanur Kauh became the essential part of Sanur becoming one of national tourism strategic zones," he said.

in terms of religious tourism, Sanur Kauh Village offers numerous spiritual sites which is always crowded by visitors. Not only foreign visitors, but also local visitors. "Most of the visitors are Hindus people who pray at temples along Mertasari Beach, like Tirta empul Temple, dalem Pangembak Temple, and also Blanjong Temple, which has Blanjong stele in it," said Made Ada.

Therefore, various efforts in managing those potentials have been done intensively. "We have made pavement along the river-side, to frame the river estuary," he explained. Made Ada said that the pavement installation was done in order to make the river area neat and clean.

Besides that, in terms of demographic policy, Sanur Kauh Village will inveterate every settler in the area. "The purpose is to maintain demographic administrative code of conduct so that if there’s a problem in future time, we will be prepared," he said.

Besides that, we need to make better waste management. That is why we will give more effort on that two matters," he said.

Made Ada then asked the people in Sanur Kauh Village to work hand in hand to manage their waste. "A group of fishermen held a clean-up on Sundays morning. The community are very enthusiastic of this act. i see some part of the shoreline in our area has already cleaned. However, there are also some which has not," he said.

CUltuRE

Eid is known in indonesia as Hari Raya idul Fitri (or more popular as Lebaran) and is a national holiday. idul Fitri" is indonesian spelling of Arabic "eid al-Fitr". While "lebaran" is localized name for this festive occasion, the etymology is

not clear. it is suggested derived from Javanese word lebar which means "finished". Then the word "lebar" is absorbed into Indonesian language with additional suffix "-an", so it becomes a common vocabulary for a celebration when the fasting ritual is "finished”, or derived from Sundanese word lebar which means "abundance" or "many" to describe the abundance of foods and delicacies served for visiting guests; family, relatives, neighbors and friends during this festive occasion. Another theory suggested, "lebaran" is derived from Betawi, lebar which means "wide and broad", so the celebration means to broaden or widen one's heart feeling after fasting ritual of Ramadhan. Madurese people have also a similar word called lober to describe the completion of Ramadhan fast. Many banks, government and private offices are closed for the duration of the Lebaran festivities.

One of the largest temporary human migrations globally is the prevailing custom of the Lebaran where workers, particularly return to their home town or city to celebrate with their families and to ask forgiveness from parents, in-laws, and other elders. This is known in indonesia as mudik (go to udik, literally means: source area) or pulang kampung (homecoming). it is an annual tradition that people in big cities such as Greater Jakarta, Surabaya, or elsewhere in indonesia.

The night before Idul Fitri is called takbiran, it is filled with the sounds of many muezzin chanting the takbir in the mosques or musallahs, people usually fill the street and also chanting takbir. In many parts of indonesia, especially in the rural areas, obor (torches) and damar/pelita (oil lamps) are lit up and placed outside and around

homes. Also, during takbiran, people usually light various firecrackers or fireworks.

On the Lebaran day, after performing eid prayer in the morning, people dressed in their new or best clothes will gather to greet their family and neighbors. it is common to greet people with "Selamat idul Fitri" which means "Happy eid". Muslims also greet one another with "mohon maaf lahir dan batin", which literally means "Please forgive (me) outwardly and internally", because idul Fitri is not only for celebrations but also a time for atonement to ask for forgiveness for sins which they may have committed but was cleansed as a result of the fasting in the Muslim month of Ramadan. during this eid morning to afternoon, the zakat alms for poors usually distributed in the mosques.

Families usually will have special Lebaran meal; special dishes will be served such as ketupat, opor ayam, rendang, sambal goreng ati, sayur lodeh and lemang (a type of glutinous rice cake cooked in bamboo). Various types of kue, cookies and dodol sweet delicacies are also served during this day. Younger families usually visit their older neighbours or relatives to wish and greet them a Happy eid also to ask for forgiveness. idul Fitri is a very joyous day for children as adults give them money in colourful envelopes.

Ketupat is a popular traditional celebrative dish for eid al-Fitr meal in Brunei, indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Southern Thailand.

it is customary for Muslim-indonesians to wear a traditional cultural clothing on Eid al-Fitr. The Indonesian male outfit is known as baju koko: a collarless long or short-sleeve shirt with traditional embroidered designs with a "kilt" sarung of songket, ikat or similar woven, plaid-cloth, and a headwear known as songkok. Alternatively, men may wear either Western-style business suits or more traditional loose-fitting trousers with colour-matched shirts, and either a peci hat. Traditional female dress is known as kebaya kurung. it consists of, normally, a loose-fitting kebaya blouse (which may be enhanced with brocade and embroidery), a long skirt both of which may be batik, or the sarung skirt made of batik, ikat or songket and either the jilbab (hijab) or its variant the stiffened kerudung.

Later, it is common for many Muslims in both indonesia to visit the graves of loved ones. during this visit, they will clean the grave, recite Ya-Seen, a chapter (sura) from the Quran and also perform the tahlil ceremony. in indonesia there is a special ritual called halal bi-halal. This could be done during or several days after idul Fitri. Usually core family and neighbour first during first day of Idul Fitri, further relatives in the next day, and work colleagues in days to weeks later after they get back to work. They will also seek reconciliation (if needed), and preserve or restore harmonious relations.[39] The rest of the day is spent visiting relatives or serving visitors.

Tuesday Tourism,KPSN Sanur

Word by Okantara

The effort of Sanur community in designing national tourism strategic area (KPSN) is quite successful. All efforts to elevate Sanur's potential as KPSN are expected to bring prosperity to the society in rapid economical movement in the future.

The aim of setting up KPSN is not only to attract more tourists to visit, but also to give chance to Balinese people to enjoy their tourism area. ida Bagus Sidharta Putra stated that at Bali Tourism Board office in Denpasar.

He said that this effort should be supported by all components of surroundings pakraman village (traditional Balinese village) so that every plan will go smoothly. "The result of these efforts not only can be enjoyed by tourists, but also by Balinese people. in this case, we suggests all elements of traditional village join force to arrange the composition of tourism accommodation in Sanur so that everything will go well," said ida Bagus Sidharta Putra.

Moreover, in the arrangement of KPSN in sanur, all of the tourism stakeholders are hoped to pay attention on couple of issues, such work force and land use. in terms of work force, the implementation of KPSN is hoped to absorb 60% of local workers in accommodation field.

On the other hand, in terms of land use, the environment has to be the main concern by making green area on each construction. And not to forget, the involvement of small-medium business which became an essential supporter. Other land use that need attention is the slums that need renewal. The arrangement of KPSN really needs a very mature careful spatial plan. it was said by Firmansyah Rahim of

Ministry of Tourism and creative economy of Republic of indonesia at Tuesday Tourism event. The theme of that event was The integration of national strategic tourism area (Sanur morning of the world).

"With no mature and careful spatial plan, the arrangement will never done. That is why we need to be ready with allowed land. Spatial plan need to be done first. And if we made the spatial plan, but does not match the real condition, it will be useless too. So, we need to make exact spatial plan. if it is done, then we proceed in arranging KPSN," said Firmansyah.

He explained, the arrangement of KPSN is essentially about planning. "Well in KPSN is we make planning, not constructing. And our duty in KPSN is making outlays. in terms of constructing, it is just about the money talk," he said. He also stated again that the ministry's obligation is to make detailed development outlay which is obligated by court. "if it is done, local government will be involved in making plan, whether it will implemented in local bill or anything else," he said.

Ngurah Wijaya, Chairman of GiPi Bali, added the importance of renovating and renewing tourism area in Bali. Not only physically, but also other aspects that might affect the society. The aim of KSPN is to develop the society by elevating the role of tourism. "We want to give an understanding that we have a tourism object, and that can be used to elevate the prosperity of the society," he said.

He added, "Why we use Sanur? Because Sanur is one example in Bali and this we can spread to other region, that KSPN is really what local people want. Besides that, Sanur is a notorious tourism destination and for now the facilities should be developed."

Moreover, he said that the KPSN fund has already disbursed for Sanur. The detailed plan also done so that it can be implemented. "Those fund really has to be used by local society, not by foreign investor. So it will develop their own society," he stated.

An exhibition of indigeneous Australian visual art opened at the Maha Art Gallery in denpasar on 4th of May 2014.

Message stick : indigeneous identity in Urban Australia told the stories of some of the complex perspectives of contemporary Australian indigenous identity.

The Australian Ambassador to indonesia, Greg Moriarty said he hoped the exhibition would help deepen understanding in indonesia of modern Australia. He also stated that it was a great privilege to introduce indonesian audiences to work produced over the past 25 years by some Australia’s leading indigenous artist. The artwork itself explored a range of issues in Australian society, including stereotypes and cultural identity.

Message stick features a selection of significant work from Artbank created by 11 indigenous artists living in urban areas across Australia. The artists include Reko Rennie, who will this year undertake an Asialink arts residency with Cemeti Art House in Yogyakarta.

Indonesia was the final leg of Message Stick’s international tour, which started in Turkey in September 2012 and had included stops in South Africa, india, Thailand and the Philippines.

After the exhibition showed at Maha Art Gallery, it will be travelling again to Bandung and Jakarta. it is a part of the Australian embassy Jakarta’s Art and Cultural Program 2014. The program includes concerts, visual art exhibition, dance, literature, fashion and a science and innovators roadshow.

Laurent JuillardFrance / Café Moka SanurThe most popular products at this café are pastries and bakery products. Especially the butter croissant. And the most fun way to eat a croissant is to dip it in a cup of black coffee. Mmm… . Don’t miss those tasty quiches and the fresh squeezed orange juice. As well as the mixed salads and sandwiches made of fresh baked breads. They are well-appreciated by the guests for their lunch menus. Large choices of

sweet pastries in the showcase. Perfect for any time and occasion.

Cristal DiversJl. Danau TamblinganCrystal Divers Bali are simply the best. Being a 5 Star IDC Centre ensures that you get the very best, whether thats fun diving or undertaking one of the many recreational or professional dive courses. Crystal Divers has some of the best instructors in Bali, with a mutli-award winning Platinum Course Director who ensures that safety and standards are adhered to, as well as ensuring that guests are well looked after.

Crystal Divers has its own hotel and restaurant/bar which is popular with divers and non-divers alike. The hotel is comfortable and well appointed with a very nice pool right outside your room and the food that is served, from breakfast through to dinner and snacks is delicious. What Crystal Divers and their team of excellent staff really do well is creating a ‘family’ environment that makes people want to return time after time, a true indicator of their success. There is always something going on at Crystal that keeps you entertained and dont be surprised to find yourself hunting at short notice for a fancy dress costume. I cannot wait to go back again really soon as this is one of the best places in Sanur, regardless of whether you are a diver or not. But don’t be surprised if you go there as a non-diver and leave as a certified PADI Diver.
